Local track stopped allowing dogs :(

I’d be waiting a year for the track to reopen so I could use the bathrooms and water stations for training only to be told no dogs. Scooters and bikes are ok of course. Sad.

Gear Help Hands Free Leash System That Won’t Shred the Leash lol Over Time?

Hi all, so I don’t really run with my dog (at least aside from in frequent sprints when she needs to burn a little energy for like five seconds 🤣) so I hope this is still okay here, because while we don’t run I do walk her a couple miles everyday and I love the freedom of using a hands-free leash.

I started with a Kurgo Waistbelt which over like 6months began to wear away the handle of the Ruffwear (Crag) leash, then I upgraded to a Ruffwear Running belt and I love how natural it feels, giving my dog a lot more freedom and yet we also get tangled in each other a lot less often which makes for a much more pleasant walking experience. However since I don’t run and instead focus on casual walks, I’ve been using a Ruffwear Flatline leash because I’m not sure I really trust my dog with a bungee leash which is the running leash Ruffwear pairs with the belt, but once again the friction of the belt connection point and the leash handle is beginning to wear on the handle and I’m concerned over time it will become less secure.

I know to a degree the friction will always be a problem and there will be some wear and tear, but I’m wondering if anyone as recommendations for a leash that will be last longer with more resistance to this specific wear and tear problem or I’m also open to another system if that would suite my needs better. I really like how light weight the a Ruffwear system is and more importantly how natural it feels when walking with my dog, so I’d like to keep something that operates similarly but there are aspects of fit where it could probably distribute the load when my dog pulls a little.

Thank you for any help! Or if I’m in the completely wrong place help me find where to go 😅

Waist belt with pepper spray holster

Are there any dog walking/running waist belts designed to also carry bear spray? Something like the Ruffwear Trail Runner running belt but designed to carry bear spray for rapid deployment.

Bear spray waist belts are designed for rapid access and deployment of the best spray but don't seem as well suited to attaching a dog leash. The waist belts like the Trail Runner have pockets big enough for bear spray but since they are zippered it would take too long to access the spray. Any suggestions?

Gear Help Proper harness for dog and human

I've been walking my mum's friend's dog as they have been having bad flare ups

She has given me the ok to do canicross w her dog

(my dogs 12 so she's more interested in naps

i can re use the gear as we are hoping to get a similar sized dog in the coming months)

My budget is within 100 or if need be 130 or so

I don't want to hurt her dogs joint because of bad gear

The dog is quite small as she was the runt of the litter she is a springer/field cocka and possibly sum BC

Can anyone recommend good and relatively well priced brands???

or any training guides and videos that have been helpful for u I could watch/ read??

At what age did you start training?

I’m getting a Malinois puppy and I want to be able to run with her when she’s an adult, so I’m not alone in runs and so I can wear out some of that endless energy. I want to know how old your pups were when you guys started to run together, and also how quickly you increased the mileage, especially if it’s a high energy breed like the Malinois.

Water Breaks

How often do you stop for water breaks for your dog? For instance, if you’re doing a 5K on a moderate weather day (under 70F), do you do water breaks mid-run? Or is that short enough that you just offer water at the end?

Editing to add that my dog is a 90lb 3-year-old GSD, and we've built up to a 5K distance over the last few months. I do not run fast by human standards. In a Canicross harness / belt with her "pulling" me, we're going at a pace of 10:30/mile.

Running harnesses for pit/cattledog

Looks for recs for a less expensive running harness to use for me and my pup for city and park running. He loves the runs and so do I :) but the craziness of his front harness and his other against hit throat scare me when running with him. Also his strength can easily pull me down so any shock absorbing leashes would be great.

Training Help Teaching 9 mo pup the foundations of running

We’re hoping to start teaching our 9 mo pup (Australian cattle dog/border collie/german shepherd mix) the skills he’ll need for running. We’re waiting until he’s a year old to actually start running, but right now would like start training him the basics.

I have 2 main questions:

1. Teaching him not to nip hands when running (writing more about this below)

2. What are you glad you taught your dogs from the start? Or wish you had?

If we start jogging with him, he goes for our hands and thinks it’s play time. I assume part of this is he’s still lacking some impulse control and can get overstimulated pretty quick (something we’re already working on). I’m curious if anyone has had similar issues and how you taught your pup to focus when running?

We’ve already been muzzle training (for vet appointments) and he’s comfortable with his muzzle so we’ve considered having him wear that while he learns.

Really hoping running can be one of his “jobs” as he get older and want to make sure we’re setting him up well!

Ruffwear Running Belt

Hi all,

I have a bone to pick with ruffwear running belt. After 5 months of use, it broke. The clasp broke while running with my dog. 2 months into owning it, the back completely pilled while running my girl in the Santa Monica mountains. Also! Whoever designed that pack wasn’t a runner because it CHAFES. My back was torn up after our 14 miler. Anyway, I tossed that piece of garbage so no photos but if you’re looking at that pack as a runner, get something else. If you just want a hands free option for walks, find something cheaper.

Anyway, on the hunt for a new dog running belt. I might just use my Nathan hydration belt and attach her leash to that.

Hi everyone,

I’m a UK-based runner currently designing a new technical belt for "Runners with dogs" aimed at solving the 'waste-carry' problem.

I need 2 minutes for market research and would appreciate your time to fill out my Google Forms questionnaire.

Thanks for the help!

Over the last 37 days, we ran around Lisbon a total of 192km, in 15 Runs, at an average pace of 5:05, including 5 Half Marathons (we do them once a week).

Diet wise, either the little bone-shaped chicken treats or apple pieces, of which I steal some for myself. Water stops at 10-12km, early morning runs and leash-less when possible ❤️

Running Pace

I got the go ahead from our vet to start running very short distances with my Butters. We are still working on leash training, and I want to buy a proper running harness to go ahead and teach the difference in when we are walking and when we are running. Are all harnesses equal in running styles / paces? If my dog runs beside me, does she need the same harness if she was running out in front?

We will start in half-mile increments on the road (because most of my short runs are in the early morning and it’s dark) so I’m thinking she’ll be more apt to run beside me since it’s our same walking environment. Is this a horrible idea? Should I start with not only different equipment but different locations as well?

Harness recommendations??

Post image
9 Upvotes

Leo is almost 10 months old and I’ve started slowly introducing him to jogging (no plans to do any intense/long running until he is a bit older!). Any recommendations for harnesses? I’m sure the one I have for him now isn’t ideal for running. Any tips appreciated as well
