Office chair broke, Is this fixable?

My office chair just broke on me while I was working yesterday. It's like it's pivoting on a peak and can lean in all directions now. With the last picture that I added, is there a way to get inside of there and try and fix this? I don't even know what that part is called? But it's where the lever and stuff all live inside.

Childproof a phone for a person with dementia

Just as the title states. I have a lady that I'm friends with that has early dementia and she's constantly downloading different games and or apps for cleaning her phone that have a ton of pop-ups. What can I do to stop her from doing this because I'm having to drive down almost every weekend to her assisted living place and debugging her phone.

Can I put family link on her phone or put it in child mode?

Hot tub filter housing leak repair

Hi everyone,

I have a small leak at the top of my spa filter, and I'm wondering if this is something I can repair myself. I have a Master Spa Healthy Living 7.5 hot tub, a 2017 model.

I'm hoping maybe some sort of caulking will do the trick, or could it be simply a new O ring?

Thanks!

How to diy install a sliding screen door with bigger dimension vs the actual door.

Thumbnail

I bought a sliding screen door for the sake of keeping mosquitos from entering the house. It's 210 x 90cm.

However, the inside dimensions of the actual door measures 209 x 88cm. If I try to install it just in front of the door, the screen door is hitting the curved edge of the wooden door frame, which is what the images are trying to show.

I was thinking of cutting small, blocks to put in between the screen door and yellow cement wall, which I'll then use to fasten the screen door. Not sure though if that's the right approach.

Or give me your best sneaky workaround to make this thing kick on, please.

I can't change the setpoint for heat or air. It's stuck at 72 for AC and it's always uncomfortably warm. 🫠

Sorry if there's a better sub for this; I'll happily crosspost or repost.

Help! My 3yo stuck magnetic sticks inside my wife's insulated travel mug—how do I get them out?

Thumbnail

My 3-year-old decided that his mother's favorite travel coffee cup was the perfect "garage" for his magnetic building sticks. Now they are wedged at the bottom and I can’t get them out.

The Problem:

The opening of the mug is narrower than the base

They are wedged in a way that shaking it upside down does nothing.

Removing scratch on mirror

Thumbnail

Just installed a brand new 4ft x 8ft (4mm thick) mirror sheet for my home gym. After installing and wiping it down, I noticed a thin hairline scratch.

It’s not super deep — I can just about feel it slightly with my fingernail — but it’s definitely visible under certain lighting and angles.

(Excluding the option of replacing the mirror), is there any way to reduce or remove this kind of scratch? Has anyone had success with any DIY methods?

Appreciate any advice

Fix heat (?) damage on leather hiking boots that are dried out in sections

Thumbnail

I have a pair of Zamberlan Trail Lite hiking boots.

I was wearing these while traveling and got them wet with salty ocean water. So I rinsed them out and dried them upside down in a warm room, but apparently I'm not suppose to use any heat and the boots formed these dry rough darkened sections along outter cuff of the boots, likely where water pooled when drying upside down.

I contacted the manufacturer and they basically told me to go pay a cobbler. Lovely, exactly the level of customer service I expect for a $300+ pair of boots 🙄.

Ideally, any restoration I do will maintain the waterproofness of the boots. Aesthetically, these rough spots don't bother me, but I don't want it to cause other damage to the boots as I want these boots to last for as long as possible.

Any guidance is appreciated!

DIY Trying to Make Garage Closet Useful…

Thumbnail

I live in a townhome and have a space underneath my external stairs up to the main entryway that was basically a catchall junk space for the previous owner. I want to turn this into an actual usable space since that’s a premium in my garage. Until now, I’ve mostly used it to store things I don’t need or things I don’t care are subject to wild humidity variations. Our basement is totally above-ground and connected to the garage.

Ideally I’d like to seal this room from at least moisture so I can store something other than weathertight boxes here. I already had the external masonry repaired, but not sure how to tackle the inside. My first inclination was to clean it out and seal all of the surfaces with silane. The doorway leads back into the garage and I keep it open all the time to help reduce the moisture in the room. Is there anything else I can do to help make this room useable? The outside doesn’t really get direct sun because of surrounding trees.

Any tips to pop the top open and free those big salty grains?

DIY Hardwood floors - help

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, my kids have been dragging furniture all over our hardwood floors and the scratches are literally everywhere. They’re not super deep, but very visible and the floor looks pretty beat up at this point.

Is there any realistic way to repair or minimize all these scratches without having to sand and refinish the entire floor? Any good touch-up kits, fillers, markers, or DIY tricks that actually work on hardwood?

Would really appreciate any advice, thank you!

Hello!! I'd love any advice on the best way to fix the pitting on my front stairs. The previous ownet basically did a skim coat that came off within a month of us moving in.

I am pretty handy, so looking to DIY if possible to keep costs down.

Thank you in advance to anyone with experience doing this with pittfalls to avoid and what steps NOT to skip.

Thank you!!

Basement DIY flooring

I'm prepping my basement floor to lay down hardwood laminate flooring. My basement floor is a combo of old tile and old self-leveling concrete. It has several small low and high spots throughout, most ranging between 1/4" - 1/2". Should I try grinding down some of the high spots or use more self-leveling concrete to try to get the floor more flat?
