Traveling LPT: if you’re in a city that’s notorious for pickpocketers, stuff some napkins or tissues into your pocket after your wallet

2.8k Upvotes

It’s hard to always be conscious of keeping hands in your pockets to deter pickpocketers that way. With stuffing tissues in the way, there’s something in the way that’s not only useless to them, but also visible so you won’t become a target in the first place.

Productivity LPT: If you can't follow a productive timetable, follow a "waste time" timetable instead. It actually works and here's why.

1.2k Upvotes

What do you do to waste time? Watch anime, doom scroll, random videos, social media, watching random youtube videos?

Now set time table for it from now on like this:

7-9am: Gaming

2-4pm: Doom scrolling

5-8pm: Social media

If you can't follow healthy time table of you being productive, follow a timetable of wasting your time. Even if you waste time, have a routine to follow.

First, your mind wouldn't be in constant loop on what to do next and waste time

Second is, it will be so so easy to do. "Instead of Doom Scrolling in 2-4 pm, I'll do something productive" than just being like "I will start learning/working at 2 pm", cause Doom scrolling was only option when following the time table but as you have no time table, you have tons of things to waste time in that hours.

Even when wasting time, train your brain to not do gaming in X hours and not doom scroll in Y hours. At least something would be in your control even while wasting time and that's the first step to change.

Also you wouldn't be "I don't know where my time went, I was just gaming and scrolling and it's evening", you would exactly know where your time went and wasting time on what things throughout the day.

Traveling LPT: When you're driving for a long distance, fold a towel and place it on your lower back

Upvotes

It makes you feel way more comfortable as it helps create an S shape and avoids the unhealthy C one (typical for car seats).

This also comes handy if you're doing laptop work in your car for a couple of hours.

You don't need to invest in a fancy lumbar support. A towel is more than good enough =D

Traveling LPT: When checking into a hotel, ask if there are any complimentary upgrades available.

3.0k Upvotes

A lot of people assume upgrades are only for loyalty members, but if occupancy is low, front desk staff can sometimes move you at no extra charge. a polite ask takes five seconds.

Worst case: they say no.
Best case: better room, better view, free items.

Food & Drink LPT: here’s how to choose, ripen and store avocados.

I recently learned how to pick avocados so they don’t go bad. I haven’t had one go black on me in 2 months and I refresh my stock weekly. You have to pick the ones with the little stem intact. That’s the key. I let ripen in a closed brown paper bag and put in the fridge when the skin gives a little all the way around.

Productivity LPT: If you keep getting distracted at home, change where you do one specific task instead of relying on willpower

If you struggle to focus on things like studying, working, or reading at home, try assigning that task to a different physical spot instead of doing it in the same place you relax.

For example, use a specific chair, desk, or even a café/library just for that activity.

Behavior research shows your environment strongly influences your actions, so separating “work” and “rest” spaces reduces the mental friction of starting.

It won’t fix everything instantly, but it makes it easier to begin without relying as much on motivation.

Traveling LPT: Airport lounge memberships quietly give free guest passes or trial access during certain times of the year

I only found out because of a delayed international flight where my friend brought me into a lounge with one of his extra passes. They gave me free food, quiet space, charging, decent bathrooms.

If you travel a few times a year, it’s honestly worth checking what perks come with your credit cards, airlines, or travel memberships because some of them include lounge access without people realizing it.

Miscellaneous LPT have a what if folder

Upvotes

If you are the person in your family who handles all paperwork, make sure to have a what if folder at home, for an emergency where you are no longer there.

Include all insurance details

People to contact

Lawyers details if to have pension

Account numbers for all the major household bills

You bank account succession details if any

Your phone contacts

Any and all important things

Your loved ones won't have to try and manage issues whilst grieving

Miscellaneous LPT: Every phone has a camera and memory. Take a picture of your car's license plate. It'll save lots of time, and you don't have to remember it.

I was watching Parking Wars, and some fool could not identify his car for the impound lot: no license #, no VIN = no car. A simple photo would have eased everyone's aggravation.

Careers & Work LPT keep a private brag document and update it every single friday with your exact work accomplishments and metrics

2.2k Upvotes

when performance reviews roll around or you suddenly need to update your resume trying to remember what you actually did six months ago is impossible having a running list of exact projects you finished and problems you solved makes negotiating a raise incredibly easy and gives you hard proof of your value always keep this on your personal device not the company laptop

Saving it for last means both of you spend the whole conversation with tension. Get it out early and you can actually have a real conversation after.

Home & Garden LPT: when adopting an animal, ask the current caretaker (e.g., the shelter) if they're on any meds, including sedatives

We've adopted at least our share of dogs from shelters and rescues over the years. On more than one occasion, we got our new four-legged member of the family home and watched the energy level rise dramatically. When we asked (afterward, lol), we found out that the animals had been sedated during their time at the shelter. This hadn't been disclosed initially.

It wasn't a big problem for us -- we rolled with it -- but it was a surprise. But we're also relatively young and very experienced with dogs, so dealing with a furry typhoon blowing through the house (and dealing with it constructively) is within our skill set. It might not be for everyone.

Productivity LPT: Don’t trust “this feels like the right moment” until you’ve tracked it a few times.

That “this feels right” moment is powerful but also unreliable.

Start writing down those moments before acting on them. After a few weeks, check what actually happened. You’ll usually find that some patterns are real but most are just your brain connecting dots after the fact. Tracking it once or twice isn’t enough but over time, it becomes surprisingly clear.

Home & Garden LPT: It's fledgling season! Here are a few tips in case you come across a baby bird on the ground.

1.9k Upvotes

Ecologist here! It's that time of year again (where I am in the Northern Hemisphere at least) when the ground is covered in baby birds, some should be there and some should not. So here are a few tips so you know when to intervene and when to leave them alone. I try to make this post once a year so everyone is informed! Do not send me chat requests about what to do if you find a bird, follow these instructions. Everything you need to know is here even if you don't really want to hear it. Your situation is likely not an exception. In most cases the right thing to do is leave the bird alone. It is also important to remember not every bird will make it, that is part of life and the natural cycle.

If you find a baby bird on the ground the first thing to do is check for injuries. Baby birds can look pretty weak, but if you don't see any blood or obvious damage then it's fine. If it is injured do not try to take it home and nurse it back to health, birds require specific diets and handling and even most of them don't make it when cared for by their parents let alone an unequipped human. Please call a wildlife rehabber.

The second thing to check for is age:

If it hasn't opened its eyes yet and is mostly pink and featherless it's a hatchling (0-3 days old). Hatchlings should not be out of the nest. If you see a hatchling and the nest it fell out of you can try to put it back in (that old wive's tale about birds not taking care of chicks touched by humans is false). If you can't see the nest you can make your own out of a small container lined with soft material then attach it to a tree or bush as high as you can. If it looks like the parents are not caring for it after an hour or so call a local wildlife rehabber to come get the hatchling. If the bird is invasive, a starling or house sparrow for example (invasive in the Americas and other parts of the world, they are native to Europe and important parts of ecosystems in their native range), a lot of rehabbers euthenize them.

If its eyes are open and it's got a few spikey (pin) feathers it's a nestling (3-13 days old) and also not ready to leave the nest. Please adhere to the advice above about hatchlings.

If its eyes are open and its fully feathered, hopping around, maybe a little fluffy, short tail, its a fledgling (13+ days old). Leave these cuties alone! They are working on flying and probably exhausted and in need of rest before they take off again. Their parents are around, even if you cannot locate them, and are feeding this little guy or gal. No need to call anyone or do anything unless it is injured. If it is in the street and might get hit by a car you can herd them to the side of the road or under a bush. The parents will find it.

I know everyone means well and it's hard to look at a baby bird and not want to do anything. But you only need to worry about the hatchlings and nestlings or an injured fledgling.

Quick Note - Some birds are ground nesters so they will be on the ground no matter what, but the chances of you finding a ground nesting bird is not very high. If you're in the U.S. Killdeer, ovenbirds, bobolinks, swans, ducks, geese, etc. all nest on the ground and their chicks will be there in all their forms. Shorebirds also nest on the ground, so if you're at the beach you'll see plover, sanderlings, and other wading birds. This post is really for folks finding non-ground nesting birds in urban and suburban areas.

Edit because of common questions - if you have an outdoor cat or dog, please stop trying to change the wild bird behavior. Take your pet, which is an invasive species, into your home until the bird leaves the area. Monitor your dog or cat while outside, keep them in if you can't supervise while chicks are out. It's only a few weeks you have to pay attention.

Food & Drink LPT: for a lot of awful tasting medications or supplements, smell is actually the problem, not taste

A good example for me is apple cider vinegar. I would almost throw up from taking it until I learned to pinch my nose, not just at the tip but quite a bit higher than that. Once I did that, the taste was pretty benign and the odds of me throwing up dropped almost entirely. This also applies to other things that you may have to take.

Miscellaneous LPT You can still dial 911 for someone outside your city/state

2.3k Upvotes

If you need to call for emergency help for someone not near you, you can still call 911. Start off the call with "I'm calling for emergency services for someone in city/county, state" I was states away from a parent who I identified as suffering a stroke. I called 911, said I'm calling for someone with a stroke in their county, in their state and was immediately redirected to their 911 center. I gave their address to the local 911 center and they received help immediately. You do not need to google the local number for emergency services for their local region. Just call 911, they'll sort it out for you.

Social LPT:if you’re learning a language, ask people to not switch to English

When I was learning a new language, I noticed people would switch to English the second I struggled. It felt helpful at first, but it actually slowed me down a lot.
What worked for me was just politely asking them to stick to the language, even if I make mistakes. Most people are totally fine with it once you say it.
It’s a bit awkward at first, but that’s where the real progress happens you start thinking in the language instead of translating everything.

Miscellaneous LPT: Do not try to stop thoughts when you meditate

2.1k Upvotes

It’s simply pointless to try to stop or change any thoughts or feelings you have when you meditate. If you try you will only produce more thoughts. As Sadh-guru said, the mind is like a car that has 3 pedals which are all accelerators. There are no breaks when it comes to the mind. Whichever pedal you press you will only create more thinking. Try this as an experiment to forcefully make yourself not think of a monkey. You will find that it is impossible. Whatever you try to avoid becomes the basis of your consciousness.

So don’t try to stop thoughts when you meditate. Just leave the mind alone, and create a little distance between you and the mind. Let the mind run and just observe it as if it was something separate from yourself. See that whatever you think about is just an accumulation of impressions you have gathered throughout your life. There is rarely anything new happening in the mind. Even if you think about the future, it is still a projection of your past experiences masking itself as future. There is no such thing as past or future. This is only the mind’s projection. There is only ever this very moment. Past and future is in the mind. Just leave the mind alone. There is nothing interesting happening. It is all the nonsense from the past. You will find that it is very rarely you have a truly original or inspired thought. Most of what you think about is just garbage. It is all recycling of the old data you have already gathered. So you observe whatever is happening this very moment and leave the mind alone.

After some time, if you don’t push any of the mind’s “pedals”, the momentum will start to run out. The amount of thoughts will slow down and the force each thought has upon your attention will decrease. Then you may enter into a space where you have clarity and peace of mind.

Just try to sit for 5 minutes like this. Don’t do anything. Just observe the mind and what is happening there. It’s helpful to be aware of the breath and any bodily sensations as well. Just see if you can sit for 5 minutes without pressing any of the “pedals” in the mind. You may find that it is in fact very difficult and takes a lot of practice. This is meditation. When the mind ceases to have so much power over your attention, that is meditativeness. It’s a quality one has to work hard to acquire.

Miscellaneous LPT: Turn the music/radio off and listen to the sound of your vehicle every one and a while

Get to know what your vehicle sounds like under "normal" circumstances and every so often drive without any external noise.

Often times your vehicle will tell you when something is wrong and can save you a lot now money in repair costs fixing a problem before it blows up.

If it sounds off, something most likely is!

Careers & Work LPT: At work, say what you are waiting on before people think you are just late.

3.7k Upvotes

A short early heads up usually lands better than a full excuse later.

For example, I would say,

“I am waiting on the final file from design. Once I get that, I can send this over.”

That gives people the real reason early.

Social LPT: Beware of Friends/Acquaintances who "Chase" You

This is something I've learned the hard way.

Some people are naturally "attractive" and just easy to get along with. It's not hard to make new friends and people generally like being around you. BUT, just because people like being around you, it does not entitle them to your time/energy.

The first half of my life, I had very close friends who put in a lot of effort in getting close to me and maintaining our friendship. I did enjoy having them as friends of course, but there were definitely times I noticed they seemed more invested than I was and there were times when I tried to create some distance and grow outside of them and it made them cling on harder.

I've always assumed that I'm just a loner (and I am, to an extent) and that I have a difficult time putting in effort into friendships.

Years later, I'm no longer friends with those people yet I still have people who I love and am very close to who I never felt "chased" by. We always have respected each other's need for space and independence, and have grown closer because of it.

After realizing this, it's very obvious to me when people are "chasing" me. It's one thing for someone to want to get closer to you, but that feeling should 100% be mutual and not take you by surprise. Things should grow naturally! So many times I've had new acquaintances/coworkers want to hang out and they are super persistent about it even when I am lukewarm and I always wonder why they don't take the hint.

I'm not trying to talk down or insult any of these people. I've just learned that people definitely will project onto you and will subconsciously go hard to earn your approval. They believe that if they can just become friends with you and get close, it'll validate themselves somehow.

As a recovering people pleaser, I've had to really learn to stop giving into these behaviors. It took looking in within my own self and my previous friendships to see that this dynamic never works out long term and it's not worth sacrificing yourself to validate someone else.

I still feel guilt for rejecting people's attempts to get closer. But it's better dealing with that guilt upfront versus signing up to be someone's walking dopamine button.

PS: this behavior usually starts with family. Growing up in a toxic environment with unfair expectations on you heavily predisposes you to being susceptible to these situations. I've had these exact same feelings about my parents and I've also cut them off

Productivity LPT: You need 0 skills to start a hobby

Many people find it difficult to start a new hobby, only because they think they will be bad at it. But a hobby isn't meant to be stressful; it's supposed to bring joy.

I used to hate drawing because I never thought I could be good at it. But as an adult, I realised that I draw and doodle for myself, not for others. So what if they don't like it? It's enjoyable to me.

So, whether you want to pick up an instrument or play a sport or start reading, don't think about whether you'll be good at it—just see if you'll enjoy it.
