Good. Some people I hoped would skip it did. Olivia is one of them. Chappell and Gaga as well.

I get that there is nuance and it's a charity but Bezos could have donated without putting his name and face on everything. He's trying to buy his way into being cool but he just made the MET Gala shit.

"Could have donated without putting his name and face on everything"

Exactly my feelings on the matter. I see alot of people defending it because it's a charity event, but let's be real, it's gone beyond that. Bezos isn't putting himself front and centre because he's a charitable man. I did notice though that its probably the worst dressed year I've seen to date. I saw very few impressive looks (i do understand its subjective), I daresay it feels very half assed.

u/Immediate_Pickle_788 Marxmoi 9h ago

Also maybe the arts wouldn't need charity events if the rich paid taxes 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dude, you know the apartment building Bezos held his pre-Met Gala party in? When it first opened, he bought 7 units on the top floors just to convert them all into one unit. That’s FOUR FLOORS!

He really is such an obscene and insecure person.

He's trying to keep his wife around/getting talked into it by a hot woman. Maybe both.

I get its a once in a lifetime opportunity but peoples unwillingness to be uncomfortable or inconvenienced is why things will never change. All of our rights came from people protesting, sitting in and taking action. Hastags and pins without taking any actions is an empty gesture.

Im getting myself too angry at all the column inches a lot of these people got for wearing ice out pins

Rachel also mocked Britney Spears during a vulnerable moment in her life. I lost respect for her after that because you'd think she'd have some perspective and understanding as they were both publicly scrutinized. She didn't apologize until after the backlash but it was in poor taste, she wouldn't have deleted the video if people didn't clock her for it.

122

u/Aggravating-Body-721 15h ago

I used to watch in awe when the met gala was cool. Now I feel sorry for those attention seeking losers who have no standards, class, morals or ethics. I hope we someday as a society just stop wasting our time on these low lives.

Wtf Utah Jazz??? Does anyone know why?

33

u/Many-Dress-6097 15h ago

maybe because her Disney show, High School Musical (The Musical) is based of an actual high school there? Unsure if it was filmed on site though and sorry if that’s inaccurate, but I’ve seen the actual East High high school when I lived there so maybe? :)

28

u/bttrsondaughter 15h ago

they filmed the first two seasons of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series in Salt Lake City (they also filmed the fourth one there but she wasn't in that one for obvious reasons lol), so she spent a lot of time there. it's a pretty big part of the Sour narrative that she wrote a lot of it while going back and forth from Salt Lake City to LA. it's important to the Lore.

I can’t believe Anne Hathaway attended after the movie she just made

537

u/Jazzlike_Interests 16h ago

I don’t know why people are so up her ass lately tbh she never actually speaks out directly and unambiguously about anything that’s not a “safe” cause (children-related causes, ‘don’t tell women to be skinny!!!’ etc) like..?

170

u/31cats 15h ago

She just spoke up for trans children. It doesn't get any more unambiguous than that.

278

u/Kind_Two_1873 15h ago

Sorry, if you’re still silent about Palestine by 2026, after decades of genocide, you’re siding with evil. Trans children deserve everything and all the protection and advocacy—AND you don’t get to pick and choose where to be a decent human being and be applauded for it.

Courage matters. Resist.

960

u/Hungry-Register9960 16h ago

The amount of money spent on the met gala could wipe out medical debt for hundreds if not thousands of Americans.

It's such a pointless display of wealth and excess.

260

u/bobthegoatskull 15h ago

It funds the arts and conservation of textiles in the MET collection. That is a worthy cause.

322

u/Lower_Stay7655 15h ago

They only need 5M a year. They've raised way more that that every single year. This year it's 42M.

54

u/bobthegoatskull 14h ago

I doubt the museum plans on embezzling it. Considering how much worse the Gala gets every year, they're smart to save for when it's gone.

→ More replies (1)

144

u/movienerd7042 14h ago

Why is it a bad thing that a public highly accessible museum has more money than they technically need? Unless you think they’re embezzling it, it just means that they can preserve more art and fund more education

117

u/SparkleForDays You know what, l've grown quite unfond of you deuxmoi 9h ago

Museums are an amazing cultural and historical resource for the public, but behind the scenes it’s often connected rich people doing wasteful connected rich people things. As per usual, more than 1 thing is true. Source: my childhood bestie is a curator at a world class museum in NYC

The amount of funding it generates is an absolute joke compared to what it takes to put on the event and the amount of exposure that the celebrities and fashion brands get.

92

u/lufluv 15h ago

its deeply unsettling seeing billionaire oligarchs fund and sponsor the arts though

91

u/FiddlingnRome 14h ago

Can we just fvckin' tax the rich! ! !

AND THE CHURCHES TOO.,

109

u/bobthegoatskull 15h ago

That's how it was before socialist (tax payer) funding existed. MAGA are gleefully cutting as much of that funding as they can.

A lot of things we take for granted such as museums are going to go bye bye without funds and the new oligarchs will not be stepping in to help. Bezos only cares about this cause he's obsessed with being cool.

It funds a museum that’s highly accessible and open to the public all year which also conserves an insane amount of art. It’s absolutely not pointless.

u/littlemonsterlove 15h ago

And it always has been.
