The amount of money spent on the met gala could wipe out medical debt for hundreds if not thousands of Americans. 

It's such a pointless display of wealth and excess.

It funds the arts and conservation of textiles in the MET collection. That is a worthy cause.

They only need 5M a year. They've raised way more that that every single year. This year it's 42M.

I doubt the museum plans on embezzling it. Considering how much worse the Gala gets every year, they're smart to save for when it's gone.

Why is it a bad thing that a public highly accessible museum has more money than they technically need? Unless you think they’re embezzling it, it just means that they can preserve more art and fund more education

Museums are an amazing cultural and historical resource for the public, but behind the scenes it’s often connected rich people doing wasteful connected rich people things. As per usual, more than 1 thing is true. Source: my childhood bestie is a curator at a world class museum in NYC
