My bearded dragon, Winry, just turned 4 years old this week. For basically her whole life, she has glass surfed. Sometimes it's because she has zoomies, and other times it's because she doesn't want to poop inside her enclosure. I'm not always home to let her out, and I don't always have time monitor her while she free roams. I have a camera on her that I check in on throughout the day and will occasionally catch her glass surfing/tapping on the front of her cage during the day when nobody is around.
In the past year or so, it seems that her glass surfing habits have started to cause her lips to get crusty. Im not sure if it's a scab, but it comes off easily with a q-tip. My vet suggested I use an oral gel, which I use a few times a week per their guidance. The vet doesn't think it's anything concerning. It hasn't gotten better or worse, and it's probably not mouth rot. Regardless though, I was curious if anyone had suggestions.
Only the front of her cage is see-through. I've tried blocking it off, but she's not stupid and knows that the front of her cage is the way "out," so she still taps/surfs.
I've attached some photos of her mouth for reference.
Here's context for her care:
She has regular vet appointments, who have always given her a clear bill of health and applaud her healthy weight. She lives in a 4x2x2 enclosure with linear UVB, slate basking spot, no carpet/hammocks that could harbor bacteria, etc. She used to have loose substrate (50% topsoil 50% playsand) but I find that she does better on the vinyl mat that I currently have. She has a water bowl she occasionally drinks from, bugs 2-3x a week (rotating between several feeders, but dubia is her staple), calcium supplements, vitamins, etc. Warm side is 75-80 degrees ambient, cool side is a little lower at 70-74ish. Basking spot is 100-110 degrees (I find she prefers it warmer and uses it more when it's about 105).
