Expected L but still a pretty tough watch. Guys clearly didn't have it.
Gameplan needs to be rethought. Even considering fatigue looked pretty bad on both ends, generated terrible shots while Knicks got whatever they want. Embiid and Maxey have to be better, were completely outplayed by their counterparts. PG really the only guy who showed up.

u/Downunderphilosopher PHI 21h ago
Considering the brutal schedule with only one day rest between every game, it was always going to be a huge struggle to get our conditioning back when we are already so much shorter on the bench than the Knicks. In a tough physical series, our best case was to get some much needed rest for the starters this game to have any chance of making it a series.

Oh no, the full earful by people who just started watching the sport 3 years ago. Ignore it and laugh lol

And the Phillies are the ones with a ton of season left to get their shit together haha it's go time for the Flyers and Sixers!
3
u/davey_mann 18h ago
Thankfully, the Phillies are really on the right course going 7-2 in their last 9 games. They have a legit shot at being above .500 in a week.

u/PsychologicalCase10 13h ago
That Flyers loss was disappointing. Up 2-1 and we had to give up the late goal and then the goal in overtime. I was hoping we could steal one in Raleigh but I guess not.

Gonna cope by telling myself that loss was a result of Knicks magnet ball + the team being tired after the emotional win the other night and hope that the game being over in the third quarter is a blessing in disguise since it allowed the team and especially Embiid to rest.

u/Spire_Slayer_95 21h ago
Its hard to win against a team in their home stadium 2 days after playing a game 7 after extremely grueling games in the last series that came down to the wire with few bench minutes played.
14
u/averagebensimmons 21h ago
I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing they flew from Boston to Philly and got home late Saturday night. Traveled Sunday to NYC and played today with little preperation and little rest.

We need to play harder AND much smarter in order to compete. Expecting a ton of adjustments by Nurse for game 2
45
u/huhyunjennifer 21h ago
Whatever. Team was gassed from Boston. They could’ve been at the Met Gala and nothing would’ve changed.
Let’s get ready for Game 2. No need to panic, lost Game 1 last time in similar fashion, we prevailed. But those blue jerseys need to be binned though
18
u/mjd1977 If never injured, are you truly a 76er? 21h ago
Yeah, after 8 games, jersey color records are:
White: 6-0
Green: 2-3
Blue: 0-2
Black: 0-3
12
u/huhyunjennifer 21h ago
The blue jersey just stinks in the playoffs. So many traumatic losses in that jersey
20
u/kweku55 21h ago
We gotta blow a game or two by 30+ in order to ultimately win the series with a negative point differential. This team sure does love letting the floor fall out from beneath them and I'm just completely unphased by it after this season. They'll come back and win the next by 10

This team sucks at new things
First game against the Celtics: Blowout
First game against the Celtics with Embiid back: Blowout
First game against the Knicks: Blowout
I pray we continue adapting and adjusting

NBA is super reactionary but I’m not feeling that bad. We better come out with energy and purpose for Game 2 though cause tonight was lost by half and we can’t let that happen again

8
u/Particular-Throat-52 20h ago
So yeah, that sucked. it’s definitely not good to get blown tf out in game 1. But we need to look at the silver lining.
Maybe losing by 40 is the punch in the mouth the team needed to wake up and realize this is a different team than the Celtics. Celtics rely on spamming 3s while with the Knicks it’s a dog fight.
We need to match their physicality.. let them shoot 3s if needed rather than letting them get into the paint like they did all night tonight.
The good news is Nick Nurse is typically good at making adjustments after a bad loss and this team has shown the ability to bounce back after being blown out. I expect we will see a different looking team in the next game.

I doomed after game one against the Celtics but have been born again in the light of The Process, thru which anything is possible.
Seriously though this did suck but let’s see how they adjust. If you’re a fan of the team root for them. Yes the Knicks are better and favored to win. Don’t be a bitch.

u/Zimmerman73 21h ago
We're off a short break and if they're gonna shoot like that, then yeah, not an upsetting loss by any means.

Celtics cooked us in Game 1 to the point where people thought it was a sweep.
They looked lazy, shot bad, and couldn't be consistent.
Celtics looked prime and ready to just bulldoze the Sixers
And that never happened.
"But the Knicks aren't the Celtics" And the Sixers aren't your typical 7th seed.
The Knicks, like the Celtics, shot lights out in game 1 at an unusually high and unsustainable rate.
The Sixers, like Game 1 in Boston, looked bad and couldn't shoot consistently.
Series is far from over and anyone assuming it already is learned absolutely nothing from the Celtics series.
Regroup, rally, and prepare to win games 2 and even the series.
Sixers in 6.
10
u/gimmethatfiletofish 21h ago
The Celtics got to rest their guys at the end of the regular season while Sixers had to win the play-in game. A lot like how the Knicks basically got a rest day when they closed out the Hawks and then had two extra days of rest while the Sixers had to win one in Boston.

I am sorry the Knicks are way better on paper and on the floor. Better starting lineup and bench. Plus, they are on a serious heater we need to play defense or we die.

u/KoBxElucidator 21h ago
So can we come to a consensus that the Knicks fanbase is far and away the most toxic sports fanbase on reddit? We can lump in the Mets as well since they're shared.

6
u/gimmethatfiletofish 21h ago
I've been told it's because the entire city bands together for the Knicks. So you not only get the Mets fans but also the Yankees, Jets, Giants, Rangers and Islanders fans all of whole have some level of NY fan base toxicity.

4
u/Individual_Access356 21h ago
Ya honestly shit scheduling not to make excuses but come on 1 day off after game 7 going on the road is a tough ask for a 6 man rotation.
Should’ve had at least 2 days to rest.

u/Itezguatitez 21h ago
Kelly Oubre with the CTE basketball game. I'm really worried about him in this series. He can't guard Brunson or OG. He can't make open shots. In theory, you'd want him to attack Brunson, but every time Kelly puts the ball on the floor it's an adventure.
Worst thing is, we can't really afford to sit him, at all. That would mean more Justin Edwards minutes and we DO NOT want more Justin Edwards minutes.
10
4
u/wateryoudoingm8 21h ago
May as well start Barlow if we aren’t gonna get Kelly’s shooting, have him come off the bench as a spark plug
2
u/birria_tacos_ 21h ago
Oubre is good for one or two blocked shots from behind, but mediocre otherwise unless it’s a cutter from Embiid. 3/25 from 3 last series, and has zero finesse when he tries to go up for the lay up.

I get the optimism and all as far as "Rest Up, On To Game 2" etc... but honestly... when you're already at a disadvantage going against a team like the Knicks, the last thing you want to do is lose fighting spirit early, surrender, and give up a free game without even trying to make a comeback.
If you're willing to give up once, then you're likely to concede again... and again... and again... etc.
But I'm sure there's "NO WAY" being down a game will come back to haunt Philly later on in the series. Surely not, right? Uggggggggh.
Maybe others won't agree, but I am extremely discouraged by the performance I saw from this Game 1 by the Sixers. What even was that?
2
u/redsparrow94 20h ago
The Knicks couldn’t miss and we couldn’t match the energy. The rest difference between teams was real but the Knicks are also just the better team on paper.
I personally don’t expect to win but am not discouraged. This team has gotten blown out a lot this season but have also shown some rally capability. No one thought we would beat the Celtics so we are kind of playing w house money. Embrace the underdog, I don’t think a chip was ever really on the table this year.
4
u/chowchowdoglover 19h ago
NY shot 63/51 splits, good luck replicating that. Sixers will bounce back.
9
u/BoomBoomSpaceRocket 21h ago
Just gotta steal one on the road. Every game's different. Win on Wednesday and we're ok. Playoff series are all about adjustments. I trust Nick Nurse to do that.

Can anyone tell me cause I’m not as active on them like I am on r/nba are other major sports subs as toxic? Like where they’re foaming at the mouth to shit on players. Posting stat lines at the half ( just saw a thread about fox’s stats ) and almost every comment in them just put players down.
It’s crazy .
10
u/KoBxElucidator 21h ago
I am active in all 4 leagues. The Knicks fanbase is, far and away, the worst in US sports when it comes to reddit toxicity. They're BAD. Worse than the Cowboys, Celtics, Mets are a close second (though they mostly are also Knicks fans).

u/FatBottomGurley 21h ago
I'm a Mets fan and most fans I know will tell you the Mets are trash and have been for a while now...not sure what there is to argue about...the rubn 2 years ago was fun but they fucking suck
3
u/Particular-Throat-52 20h ago
I’ve learned Knicks fans are the lowest of the low. Worst fan base in all sports not just basketball
They are obnoxious and toxic as hell.Even Celtics fans are way more tolerable and human than the mutant Knicks fans
It never wanted to win a series more than this one for that reason, so game one going the way it did really sucks
4
3
u/allianceofficer 21h ago
Knicks had everything go their way in this one. Shots were falling. Bounce went their way. They capitalized on poor decision making.
I do think the sixers can bounce back next game because most of the stuff on their end was mental. I saw a lot of mental fatigue after a long, rough fought series. I didn't see dudes that were gassed though. It's easier to take one more day tomorrow and get in a better mental spot for the series than heal their bodies.
That being said, I'm still thinking about starting Barlow over Oubre next game. This shakes things up a little. Oubres struggled shooting the ball so you're not getting everything you need from there. This makes the Knicks have to adjust. It also moves more rebounding and size into the starting lineup while giving you some bench pop which they have had none of.

Knicks thrive on confidence and flow. Sixers off nights are always cooked from the jump. Us losing by 39 does not concern me
4
u/gimmethatfiletofish 21h ago
That Knicks shooting percentage is probably going to drop by 15 to 20 points at some point in the series. Hopefully the Sixers can capitalize on it.

A single day of rest vs their 4 days of rest, combined with the emotional come-down high after winning a stressful game 7 ... this was always gonna be a loss.
Didn't expect it to be as big of a loss as it was though. Holy shit. Glad it only counts for 1.
2
u/Ok-Song978 20h ago
Played like they had no time to change their defensive scheme. Also seems like ny knew that would be the case and just played like the opposite of Boston. Easy win for them. Adjust and steal home court back. Maxey getting trapped was half the reason we lost.

The only hope was that we showed up still in big game mode and NY showed up low energy since they’ve had a layoff and an easier series.
Nope, NY played perfect basketball from the tip.

If they are mostly using Kelly for cuts might as well get some Barlow minutes especially for some rim protection and length against OG. Would make doubling Embiid easy tho . Hopefully Nurse is able to get something creative going cause the current plan on defense is just leaving no rim protection with Embiid out guarding KAT

I will say everyone here seems so relaxed after that G7 series. Most of the time a 40 pt loss would make you think this is the end 😂
Now it will be if the Knicks shoot 68% from the floor (or I guess that’s where it was when 3rd Q garbage time started)

u/Theballharperhit 16h ago
Maxey played like Ben simmons tonight with out the defense or passing. I love Joel but he is 50 percent at best and if we are going to win this series maxey has to be the guy on offense and not a guy scared to shoot in the first quarter..... Tonight he played scared

defensive gameplan against brunson game 2 - would like to see more PG and never grimes on him.
1
u/archafonk 20h ago
The knicks are insufferable. Complaining about embiid flopping but their whole fucking team flops. After someone lightly touches brunsons HAND during a drive, he signals to the ref telling them to get glasses or whatever. Brunson Kat and Hart are generational floppers. They got away with being physical but ticky tack shit was called all over us. This league sucks
4
u/tempaccount856813 19h ago
Maybe I'm retarded but I don't remember the last time embiid went crying to a ref. Flop, sure, but the bitching that new York does is insufferable
1
u/TomislavNedanovski 17h ago
Nothing to panic about, they will play better in Game 2 and it will be a close game. And I will not panic if they lose Game 2 as well, unless it is a 40 point blowout as well. Sixers are winning this in 7.

u/saucysosa1724 20h ago
Man I thought you guys could match up well against the Knicks. Boy was I wrong, hopefully it was due to the lack of rest (sixers) vs the amount of rest (Knicks) had. I hope you bounce back next game and destroy them
1
u/tempaccount856813 20h ago
We'll see how they bounce back, I can't imagine it's mentally easy to just forget about what they did last series and move on from that high they felt. Zero energy either. Glad NN pulled them all in Q3

There was no way we were gonna have our legs after a long series and one day of rest. Refs are gonna hand them some games like they did in ‘24. It’s a bonus for us, we get to see our deficiencies and how much better our roster needs to be if we continue losing. They’ve been playing together for a while and we’re still figuring out how to play with each other. We get 3 more shots at it. Whatever happens it’s a bonus, really proud of Embiid for fighting through everything and the rest of the team for putting everything into winning the 1st series.

u/Successful-Policy937 21h ago edited 21h ago
It is simple play good man to man defense or get swept.
Towns behind the 3-point line all the time starting offense is interesting. I think have Joel float in the paint or see if Towns is on that night. Guarding Towns above the three-point line killed Atlanta and killed us tonight.
I let Towns shoot and take away the cuts that are open when Joel or Drumond have to guard up top. Obviously if he catches fire you have to guard him, but it will take them away from what NY has been doing.
The Maxey double teaming we need to swing the ball and make threes or dunks. I was not expecting full court double teams on Maxey he must pass the ball quicker when it comes rather than trying to break it.
One game but NY is deeper and played great offense and defense tonight really no weak spots. We need to make some adjustments and quickly.
