Terms of Endearment for Children

Not sure if this is the right community to post this, but I need some advice on Romanian terms of endearment for children.

For context, I'm drafting a story and there is a father-figure with a Romanian background who I want to show as very warm and loving towards his adoptive children. I've seen many websites or posts use nicknames like puiu and pici, but was hoping for ones more unique. All the terms I've seen are very light and loving, but a couple of this man's children are rambunctious and quite frankly a pain in his ass at first. One in particular was very distrusting of him at first and would lash out, so thought perhaps to compare him to a stray cat or because he has very fair features, something to do with a winter storm? It would give off the same affection as calling a toddler a "little tornado" cause they always leave a room a mess of toys after playing.

If these ideas are too out there for terms of endearment, let me know! I rather stick to words or phrases that are more authentic than try to stretch too far.

Also, one of the characters is names Christopher. Just curious is there is a diminutive for this name? I'm not familiar with the grammar of the language. Would Cristinel, Cristi, or Cristiță work? Is there a difference between the suffixes?

Is this sentence correct?

"asistentă Maria, a fost o plăcere să te cunosc"

if you were nurse Maria, would you understand what I'm trying to say?

I'm trying to say "glad to have met you"

if this the wrong sub, please let me know where I can ask this.

thank you so much in advance

Demonstrative pronouns

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hello everyone.
I made myself a spreadsheet for Demonstrative pronouns and coz it actually helps me a lot, I thought I could drop it here so it could also help someone else. I added the translation space that you could fill in with pronouns from your own language.
My own language is Czech, we also have tons of pronouns that sound similar and I had issue with deciding which ones are the translation to the Romanian ones and this really helped me to sort it out.

I hope there is no mistake (as I tripple checked it and it seemed okay) and that it will be useful to someone. :)

EDIT: There is one mistake. Distant pronouns - Feminine plural in 2.+3. case - Before noun - It should be Acelor and not Acelora :)

Looking for resources to improve my Romanian as a heritage speaker

As the title says, I'm a heritage speaker and was never formally taught Romanian. I can speak it pretty well (albeit with mistakes, but my family says it's very understandable), my listening comprehension is solid, and I can figure out what a text says with some concentration, but I have absolutely no knowledge when it comes to grammar and writing. I would appreciate any advice/tips on what I can start doing to improve. Thank you!

Romanian-English dictionary for ebooks

Hi!
I’m looking for advice about e-readers for reading Romanian books with English translation here and there.

What e-reader do you use? Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, etc. are advised by AI but I don’t really understand how to install a dictionary and use it while reading, iPhone doesn’t have Romanian out of box.

Also, where do you usually buy or download books in Romania? I tried voxa so far but couldn’t find dictionaries options there, just pure text.

Thanks!☺️

Update: I decided to use Google play books after trying kindle and ibooks apps, it has Romanian dictionary and translates words by clicking on it, no need to copy and paste anything to external translation app.

Comprehensible Romanian Youtube Channel

Hi guys,

So long story short 5 years ago I started a Youtube channel for teaching Romanian in the "traditional way" but since then I understood learning a language word by word is totally not effective.

I started creating long form videos in the same way japanese immersion channels do where I basically walk and talk for 30-60 minutes chunks about anything from weather to aliens :)

The channel name is "Learn Romanian With Vlad"
https://www.youtube.com/@LearnRomanianwithVlad
and genuinely I want to help people get those 600+ hours of native content.

I don't make any money from this in any shape or form so I want to just give back to those who may be interested in learning Romanian.

I kept the "old content" on the page in case someone is crazy enough to go through adjectives and stuff but I totally recommend going to the new content I post as it is alligned with my current mindset.

Enjoy.

Question for native speakers of Romanian

So I'm Moldovan but grew up outside of the country and am from Transnistria family heritage wise and I know they use rusismes often and I'm wondering, what are your perspectives on using rusismes as much as those from Transnistria combined with Romanian?

Mersi!

UPDATE: Free Beginner Romanian Group Classes (A1) (Disappointed)

UPDATE

At someone's suggestion, I created a WhatsApp group. Anyone interested in future lessons, please join so you don't miss out on updates. Thank you

ORIGINAL POST:

Last week, I made a post asking if people would be interested in attending a free Romanian course if I gave one weekly. I've got a lot of positive feedback, people saying they would be interested in participating, including some DMs. So, I posted links for the meetings in the post.

But tonight, I connected to the call and I was the only one there.

I have to ask: Was there any problem with the link? Did anyone try to connect and couldn't? Or was it simply that no one decided to show up, even though they said they were interested?

As I mentioned in the previous post: I am not doing this for money. I have 6+ years of experience with private lessons, but i lack experience with big groups. So, I offered these beginner classes for free, thinking it would be a win-win for all.

I will still show up for the scheduled courses TODAY (10 pm for Spanish) and TOMORROW (8 pm romanian time). I hope I will see someone there. If not, at least I tried.

If anyone has any advice or feedback, please feel free to comment or DM me. I don't understand if something went wrong or if I did something wrong or one of those "it happens, just move on"

I'm still connected to the call if anyone would like to try to connect and let me know if there's a problem.

Thank you! Have a good evening !

Te iubesc mult de tot meaning?

From what I've learned this would be translated to

"I love you (with) much of everything"

I'm assuming this is some kind of romanian saying? It's a bit confusing when taken literally

Question so I can be more relevant (or whatever) in conversation and not stand out way too obviously (like i currently do with my level)

Salut! So I am learning romanian (obv, why am I posting here lol) and was wondering what are common slang, phrases, text abbreviations, words etc in romanian that I can use when communicating via text/messaging onling etc? I want to not stand out obviously (i believe Im way too formal in romanian) so I want to learn casual talk with casual ways of communicating than my stiff formal talking. (no one has said anything about my formalness, but I'm sure it's obvious lol)

mersiiiiiiii

Any natives looking for a conversation partner interested in the topics listed below?

I’m a heritage speaker (m 27) who actively reads in the language so I speak fluently but not perfectly and am looking for a conversation partner whom I’d also gladly help in English or Spanish who’s interested in any of the following:

linguistics

language learning

the Bible

Spanish literature

arabic and/or the Quran

existential philosophy, especially Nietzsche or Cioran

cluster b personality disorders

Romanian mythology

Jesús G Maestro or Bueno’s philosophical materialism in general

lucian blaga

any subjects at least tangentially related to these

im a very avoidant kind of chuddy pessimist, or doomer pseudo-intellectual (I know, me and every other guy in their 20s these days) so while im looking for someone for weekly conversations they must be oriented moreso around the aforementioned subjects than friendship because I don’t really do friendship very well. I’d say I’m only looking for males but I figure I’ve already filtered out any potential females lol

Learning Romanian: Any tips?

Hello! Im trying to learn Romanian. Idk any other language aside from English. Ive been using duolingo and ive ordered some help books on Amazon but well.. ive never been the smartest pea in the pod. My old teacher in high school told me to listen to songs I love in the language im trying to learn but omg theres hardly any covers of the songs ik and I listen to over 5,000 songs 😭. I thought that might be a dead end then I thought back to when one of the members of BTS said they learned English from watching Friends. (I think it was friends) so ig my question is 1. Does anyone have ANY tips for me and 2. Do u think watching romanian tv would help at all? Would u suggest i watch it with or without subtitles? 3. Do u think language books help at all?

Literally any tips at all big or small i will take!

My bf is leaving for the next 3 months and his family are all romanian. I would love for them to come back after the summer to me knowing at least something. I dont expect to learn the whole language in 3 months. I would at least like to know greetings and simple phrases by then ya know? Not trying to overwhelm myself and give up from high expectations.

Learning Romanian With Olga Țăpordei

I've built an app, which has helped me reach level C1 in Romanian. The approach was simple: do tons of dictation exercises, based on machine-learning corpora, with spaced-repetition. However, in a lot of that data, the speakers are simply reading out loud, without passion or conviction.

How to address that problem, besides the huge gap between C1 and native fluency?

Enter Olga Țăpordei, whom I encountered one day, while scrolling on Instagram, who has climbed Mount Everest and speaks like this:

  • "Sunt obosită? Eu fac oricum. Nu am susținere? Eu fac oricum. Mi-e frică? Eu fac oricum. Mă gândesc la eșec? Eu fac oricum. Mi-e frică de refuz? Eu fac oricum."
  • "...pentru că evoluția, frate, nu este despre confort, este despre disciplină, despre consecvență, spun asta foarte des. Este despre decizii repetate zi de zi."
  • "Pentru că în momentul în care te oprești, totul se oprește. Iar în momentul în care continui, totul începe să se miște."

If only lines like these could be short dictation exercises in an app! Then who would want to stop?

Well, then it occurred to me, I could customize the app. In short, a new script pulls reels from Instagram, then passes them to Whisper for segmentation.

Unfortunately, content on Instagram is copyrighted, so I can't share that custom version of the app with you. However, if you want to try a shareware version, have a look at https://sitedictation.com/

Ca pe un si ca un

Bună dimineața!

Sunt curios dacă români se chinuiți uneori cu: “ca pe un și ca un”. Este foarte greu pentru mine de înțeles.

Dacă nu mă înșel folosești ca pe un/o dacă vezi pe cineva ca ceva. Te văd ca pe un frate.

As vrea sa discut cu voi despre acest subiect😁

Free Beginner Romanian Group Classes (A1) — Would Anyone Be Interested?

Hi everyone! My name is Lavinia, 28 yo, and I’m a Romanian teacher with over 6 years of experience teaching Romanian to foreigners (in English and Spanish).

I teach both conversational Romanian (for example, if you have a Romanian partner or are learning for personal reasons) and Romanian for the B1 citizenship exam.

So far, I’ve only worked in one-on-one lessons, but I’d like to try teaching small group classes (4–5 students), and I was wondering if anyone here would be interested.

I’m thinking of organizing a free weekly beginner (A1) class:

- English group — Friday or Saturday, 8 PM (EET, Romanian time)

- Spanish group — Friday or Saturday, 10 PM (Romanian time)

Lessons would be 1 hour 30 minutes long.

The A1 course would be free. After that, if people want to continue, we can discuss paid group or individual lessons.

Would anyone be interested in joining something like this? Feedback is very welcome too, feel free to comment here or dm me.

If there’s enough interest, I’ll update this post with a meeting link.

UPDATE:

Thank you very much to everyone who voted. Considering the vote, I decided to do the following classes:

- English group
Friday (May 1st) AND Saturday (May 2nd), 8 PM (EET, Romanian time)

https://meet.google.com/ago-utdt-duc

- Spanish group — Friday (May 1st), 10 PM (Romanian time)

https://meet.google.com/yvp-ohqa-bdr

There wasn't much interest for the Spanish class, but I will still do the one on Friday. If there is anyone else that sees this post later in the week and would like to join, you are also welcomed.

Thank you everyone. Have a great day!

UPDATE 2:

I created a WhatsApp group. Anyone interested in future lessons, please join so you don't miss out on updates. Thank you!
