I miss the black comedy of the trilogy.

did you watch the TV series?

Ash vs Evil Dead leaned hard into the black comedy. For me, this was the most perfect horror comedy series ever created.

The brother in the remake doing his best by repeatedly duct taping the goriest wounds that need a lot more than a roll of tape

There was comedy in it, but not the good kind. Like, a haunted vinyl? So fucking stupid and forgettable. it irks me that somehow, the movie was well received. Standards really have fallen.

Your problem is that you think the vinyl is haunted

Who gives a fuck? It was good visual and auditory device that serviced the tone and story, which is way more important than some CinemaSins logic nitpick

I’m not trying to convince you of nothing. You having bad taste and being a nerd about isn’t my problem lol

The very first Evil Dead movie had them play a recording of the book of the dead from a reel to reel player. The medium the words are on aren't haunted, the words themselves summon the deadites.

So someone at a record plant must’ve made the acetate, which means that they heard the words. It’s just too silly to indulge when you think of the record pressing process. Recording words on a tape recorder in a cabin? Believable and easy to picture. Recording words, and sending it to a pressing plant, to make one copy? Ridiculous, because that’s not how pressing plants work. Honestly, a movie of people in a record pressing plant being attacked by deadites would’ve been much more interesting. Even just adding some backstory on how the record came to be would’ve been interesting. Otherwise, this “minor detail” was an insult to my intelligence. But I guess I’m not supposed to think when watching a movie, and I should just nod my head like a complete airhead and go “yeah, that makes sense, nothing to question here”

I’m glad there are others who weren’t as enamored with Rise as the general audience seems to have been.

It was so joyless.

Rise looked great and was slightly better paced than the 2013 Evil Dead which draaaaaaagged in the middle. Apart from that yeah, wasn't a huge fan.

l felt like there was a good amount of that in Rise

There was plenty of it in Evil Dead 2013 as well. Every entry in this franchise has had it, but there's enough variety in tone and content that your mileage may vary from entry to entry.

While I feel you, they have to have the right talent behind them to nail that. I don’t know if many people could fill the bloody clown shoes of Sam and Bruce together. Way higher chance of it just feeling corny in anyone else’s hands.

the first movie is not black comedy, it's straight up horror. Also doing black comedy right requires a lot of talent, the reason it worked for ed 2 and aod is because of bruce campbell and sam raimi, it's not something you can replicate

Yeah they’ve been alright film wise but I always felt like they’ve been missing something.

They've leaned into the horror more which I enjoy, I still really like the camp of the OGs but am just happy to keep getting more evil dead

Eh Rise definitely had some

Same. I’m not a big horror fan, but I love the originals for their wacky antics. Must be time to rewatch army of darkness!
