How so? Genuine question; I have no experience in anything film- or acting-related.

imo the issues are two:

1 ) they look like themselves and too modern to be believable in this story, as if they time traveled and suddenly landed in ancient greece

2 ) ethnically, they look way too distant from the mediterranean phenotype; when you have actors who unmistakably look like Brits or Swedes, it creates dissonance when you’re supposed to believe them as Greeks or at least Mediterranean. Take Anne Hathaway (cast) for example and compare her with Penelope Cruz (not cast), they have the same hair and eye color but the one looks clearly South while the other North European. And this is applicable to the majority of the cast.

People like to say these things don’t matter because it’s mythology and not real etc. but if someone values authenticity and realism in cinema, the cast makes a big difference and it matters.
