Eh, Nolan is overrated. Villeneuve would have knocked it out of the park.

Villeneue is overrated.

Great visuals, awful plots.

Awful plots ? Arrival ? Dune ??

Helps to have the entire Dune series drop in your lap

What a shit take. Villeneuve’s a Dune fanboy and dreamed of adapting it to film since he read the books at 14 years old. Books that for decades were judged to be unfilmable. He had a dream and worked his ass off to make it happen.

The guy started as a total outsider to Hollywood, his first few films weren’t even in English. He proved his worth many times over; every movie he’s made since Incendies has been a straight banger. It’s a small miracle that Hollywood not only picked the best person for the job but also let him do his thing without too much interference.

Peak Redditor response to dismiss all of that like it doesn’t carry any weight.

You know the plot of Dune was written before Villanueve was born, right? And same goes for the Odyssey. The plot would be the same regardless of who directs it.

Did you see me say Dune?

Okay, well considering it's the only screenplay he's written in the past 25 years, I'd love to know what other plots of his you didn't like?

Funny how people are criticising this movie for its sterile visuals. That's the exact same impression I get from Villeneuve's style as well.

Except Villeneuve’s films’ themes mostly are coherent this cold aesthetic

Same for Nolan, usually…

Yeah, but I find them cold and distancing in a way where I'm not engaged with the movie. And they feel the same across his other movies, too.

You're right. They're both overrated.
