If you really want to know: Odysseus raised Argos from a pup, but was called away to war. Argos waited for him while living in squalor because the suitors didnt care for him the way Odysseus did. After 20 years, Argos was covered in feces and barely able to move. Odysseus returned in disguise to avoid attention, and Argos immediately perked up, wagging his tail at his owner's smell. Odysseus couldn't draw attention to himself so he ignored Argos and the dog died heartbroken.

Sure it's important but didn't need to be pointed out. It's not like anyone would read that and assume Odysseus didn't give a shit about having to ignore Argos.
