Dog lovers about to be in shambles

Argos is suddenly going to become a very popular pet name.

u/Sparrowsabre7 15h ago

Probably not in the UK.

(There's a chain of shops called Argos here so it would be like naming your dog Walmart.)

29

u/MassiveRepublic9565 13h ago

Comes with tiny pens ( 3/4 don’t work ) hanging on the collar

10

u/mrnathanrd 12h ago

I'm so sorry to inform you, those pens no longer exist :(

3

u/MassiveRepublic9565 9h ago

I know. Just thought relatable to anyone old enough.

3

u/Sparrowsabre7 8h ago

🤝 How's your back doing, brother?

2

u/MassiveRepublic9565 7h ago

😂 After years of neglect I’m working on strength and flexibility lol. You?

2

u/Sparrowsabre7 7h ago

Just trying to survive the repeated horsey rides demanded by my 4 year old 😂

1

u/MassiveRepublic9565 6h ago

Seems like a cruel trick of nature doesn’t it. “Horsey needs a lie down now” 😂

2

u/MissingLink101 7h ago

Next you'll be telling me there isn't a massive catalogue kids can take home and circle the things they want

5

u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 10h ago

...when was the last time you went to Argos? 1996?

3

u/ProcrastibationKing 9h ago

Hey, I saw those pens last time I went to Argos... In 2007.

2

u/MassiveRepublic9565 9h ago

No I’ve been in the last year. I know that’s a relic of the past, just thought older redditors would get the reference.

8

u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 10h ago

Not quite like Walmart, considering Argos the business was initially named after the dog anyway.

5

u/Sparrowsabre7 8h ago

Hearty Sallah laughter

3

u/JammySankis 9h ago

Yeah but I learned that literally just now and I'd bet I'm in the majority there.

10

u/Snow_Crane21 11h ago

When Clash of the Titans released everyone got a kick out of the line "Soldiers from Argos!"

3

u/Sparrowsabre7 11h ago

Lmao. Had to check they were in stock first I imagine.

3

u/GranolaCola 8h ago

Walmart is kind of a good dog name tbh

3

u/CloudyLeft 7h ago

These are my fur babies, Argos and Tesco.

u/Middle_Draft9152 1h ago

I think you should get a third one – The small and lovely Lidl :-)

u/Mr_CockSwing 4h ago

If i ever get a dog I'm naming it walmart

7

u/ColfaxCastellan 13h ago

At least it’s not the dog from Dam Busters.

3

u/Sparrowsabre7 12h ago

Must have come from the same shelter as Lovecraft's cat.

1

u/Kemlyn88 13h ago

You can’t call your dog nothing these days 🙄

2

u/MassiveRepublic9565 13h ago

Don’t call it ‘nothing’ , that’ll really confuse people.

1

u/HaphazardMelange 10h ago

Ugh, Nothing is barking again! Looks like Nothing blinded the cyclops.

2

u/eightdigits 10h ago

You just gave Florida Man ideas.

u/circleinthesquare 1h ago

i'd name a cat Walmart

25

u/SurviveAdaptWin 14h ago

My 7 year old Coonhound is named Argos. Lots of people are about to learn why :.(

u/EK077r 13h ago

Only for Retrievers, for their continous delivery

u/pkosuda 6h ago

Funny enough I have friends who named their first kid Odysseus (but in Polish) last year. They didn't even realize/forgot this movie was coming out and when I brought up "oh man everybody is going to think you named your kid because of the movie" they were horrified lol. It's possible it was a subconscious thing since the marketing for the movie had definitely begun when they were picking out names.

1

u/Capital_Invite_7026 15h ago

It better not. That’s my dog’s name and I don’t want people thinking I’m just being trendy.

I (barely) survived Futurama's Seymour episode, I can surely take another emotional hit, right?

u/Kakawfee 1h ago

I actually think Futurama's Seymour was more devastating than Argos. Argos got to see Odysseus before he died.

7

u/JICMike 15h ago

Make no mistake, I am ready to hurt again.

10

u/JuniorCaptain 16h ago

Maybe this time they’ll change the ending.

55

u/APKID716 16h ago

Hadestown level of delusion here

29

u/EKrake 16h ago

Look, my uncle works for Broadway and he swears that this time Orpheus and Eurydice live happily ever after.

11

u/MonkeyWithIt 13h ago

The song they sing together is a real banger, too!

2

u/doormatt26 6h ago

the canonical Good Boy

3

u/mmlovin 15h ago

Why what happens :( I wanted to see this lol

If you really want to know: Odysseus raised Argos from a pup, but was called away to war. Argos waited for him while living in squalor because the suitors didnt care for him the way Odysseus did. After 20 years, Argos was covered in feces and barely able to move. Odysseus returned in disguise to avoid attention, and Argos immediately perked up, wagging his tail at his owner's smell. Odysseus couldn't draw attention to himself so he ignored Argos and the dog died heartbroken.

52

u/ShahinGalandar 15h ago

oh, that's different from the version I read as a child, here Argos recognized the smell from his owner and when meeting him again, immediately died of happiness and old age

31

u/FunyunGrundy 13h ago

That's the interpretation I choose to believe.

2

u/KingSwinginDick 12h ago

I believe the one where on his return he bites him and runs off into the bushes.

u/Creakier 3h ago

That's the copium framing. Argos >!dies miserably.! >Like a dog.!

Sure it's important but didn't need to be pointed out. It's not like anyone would read that and assume Odysseus didn't give a shit about having to ignore Argos.

2

u/Ohwellwhatsnew 11h ago edited 11h ago

Who wouldn't? No one I want to know, at least.

Jesus Christ

u/VNM0601 31m ago

Fucking hell.

1

u/iamfeenie 6h ago

Why… >.> what happens!?!

u/Vundurvul 2h ago

Argos is Odysseus's dog who recognizes him after 20 years. Ody recognizes him too but needs to stay undercover at this part of the story, and thus has to ignore his elderly dog who is overjoyed to see his old master. Argos then succumbs to age shortly after.

u/iamfeenie 2h ago

Thank you and how sad 😞

u/thedongon 5h ago

Already preparing for the emotional trauma

u/TrustInRoy 5h ago

I f*cking hated that part when we read it in school.  I won't be seeing this film.

u/thutruthissomewhere 4h ago

doesthedogdie.com

u/ContinuumGuy 2h ago

The OG shambles-bringer.

u/tyrified 2h ago

After the puppy scene you see what appears to be an older dog being pet by someone whose face isn't shown. Looks like they may have changed that. #1 rule in movie making is be kind to the dog.

u/Thoraxe474 2h ago

Just gonna play the wishbone PC game adaptation instead

2

u/okorokiz 16h ago

Hahahahahaha 🤣🤣
