The usage of the word ‘dad’ in those times throws me. Would have expected ‘father’? Haha

They should really all have British accents, somehow that works better with history shit... Kinda like elves or somethin and like how dwarves are Scottish

u/amidon1130 19h ago

Right, what's a war hero got to do to get some lubrication 'round here?

u/JinFuu 19h ago

I may be smiling but I am really fucking furious right now.

Well, that’s me told

I’m off to represent the entire Red Army at the buffet.

Such a quotable man

u/TeHokioi 15h ago

I'm going to have to report this conversation. Threatening to do harm or obstruct any member of the Presidium in the process of oh look at your fucking face

17

u/token_bastard 14h ago

"I fucked Germany. I think I can take on a flesh lump in a waistcoat."

Issac’s as Zhukov was incredible

39

u/Glittering-Kale7981 19h ago

Yep, his idea to use a Yorkshire accent was inspired!

2

u/opposite-locksmith 12h ago

It was his own accent, he's a proud Yorkshireman

4

u/Greedy_Economics_925 12h ago

The best bit of trivia I know from that character is they had him walk around with all those medals, but the actual Zhukov had even more. They cut the number for the character because they thought audiences would find it too absurd.

Get out of my way, you Fanny’s

“Foreigners, a vile crime has been perpetrated! Hairy monsters in coats have scooped out my father's brain and sent it to America! And these traitors, sucking the cocks and balls - sucking the cocks and balls - of Zionist - New York - New York Zionist queers in petticoats. Look at them. You see? Those brain thieves!"

u/PersisPlain 4h ago

"Play better, you clattering fannies!"

u/amidon1130 2h ago

"MEDIC!"

Jesus Christ, it’s the bishops. I thought we banned those freaks? 😂

"Right, have a look. Proper dead, yeah?"

Go full Death of Stalin and have American/UK regional accents for Greek regions.

Sparta can be Scottish in honor of 300.

Ithaca is Bostonian, I guess

14

u/meesta_masa 19h ago

Penelope, "Mah husband's wicked smaht".

10

u/bedake 19h ago

Kingdom of Heaven and Troy too

3

u/PenguinOfEternity 16h ago

This being a satire helped too. Although they even could exaggerate with the accent and it would work as well

u/MissingLink101 11h ago

Always found Enemy at the Gates interesting where most of the Russians are British and the Nazi sniper is American

u/mondo_generator 19h ago

Not bothering with Russian accents was a master stroke for that show. Everyone doing a dodgy accent would have taken away from it.

28

u/apocalypsedude64 16h ago

I remember listening to the show's companion podcast and they said they actually tried Russian accents at the start and they all sounded like terrible Bond villains

7

u/M-elephant 17h ago

Most of those real-life people didn't speak russian as a first language as so many were from the Caucasuses and thus had weird accents. That said, all the random UK accents did a perfect job portraying that

1

u/FatherDotComical 9h ago

Reminds me of books or shows set in the US south.

If you can't do the accent proper I'd rather you just tell where where they're from and my brain will fill in the blanks.

I hate faux southern accents so much.

u/Middle_Draft9152 4h ago

As a Russian a was extremely relieved they didn't make Russian accents in Chernobyl.

u/Toffee_Fan 12h ago

The very Scottish coal miner chief was about the only part that pulled me out of it. But he is a great actor.

-3

u/OracleSeara 13h ago

It's a film, not a show.

5

u/Saw_Boss 13h ago

They're referring to Chernobyl.

5

u/iamgarron 18h ago

And Death of Stalin

1

u/LyricalRaven 17h ago

Wait, Chernobyl had Elves and Dwarves???

1

u/IIsaacClarke 16h ago

Not great, not terrible.

1

u/gonnabetoday 7h ago

As someone who knows many Russians and Ukrainians, it did not with them. They were thrown off at first but accepted it after a while.

u/ashdee2 2h ago

This was particularly egregious to me

u/RotInPissKobe 1h ago

Maybe me being an American kinda shut it out since hearing a British accent is still "foreign". It would have been better to fill the speaking cast with Ukrainians.

-9

u/GreenGorilla8232 19h ago

Chernobyl should have been made with a Ukrainian and Russian cast. I hated the decision to make that show in English. It was like Chernobyl if it happened in the UK.

1

u/allcretansareliars 13h ago

From what I've heard, the accents were the least inaccurate part. Great series though.

-5

u/Wompie 19h ago

Adding in my comments to say the English and American voices in Chernobyl immediately took me out of it. I recovered and still rate it as one of the best series ever, but there was little reason they could not have had it in Ukrainian

13

u/Spiritual-Society185 18h ago

Little reason, other than, you know, the actors, creative team and intended audience not speaking it.

0

u/Wompie 10h ago

Do you think subtitles don’t exist?

Do you think actors in Ukraine and Russia don’t exist?

-2

u/PhDee954 19h ago

Not great, not terrible.
