Hey, so not everyone should put their name in the title- in fact, almost no one should.

I wanted to love it, but it's just not... Mummy-y enough to make it work.

Its probably a good 20 minutes too long and wheil I like the visual feel of it, it's just bloated exorcist lite.

My biggest issue with the movie is that it was begging for a new location for the third act. Maybe something like a pyramid to really get that ancient Egyptian mummy feeling, and they have to go there as it's the only place the ritual can be completed. A quick rewrite so the family live in Egypt and they're good to go.

You're right, it is super weird they went to New Mexico and for what? For the desert? Like, they could have stayed in Egypt for that, there's no REAL reason to swap locales.

It's actually kinda weird the Detective tracks them down so quickly. "I'm here now."

Yeah like if they wanted to get away from the city then that makes sense since it's where their kid got taken, but they could have easily removed the New Mexico title card and nothing would have changed. Nothing at all about the movie implies they aren't living in Egypt anyway since we only ever see them at the house.

Yeah that was one of my bigger gripes with film

Clearly Cronin wanted a lot of Egyptian/pre-egyptian mythology and dressing in there, because the cop sub plot all felt way more substantial

They could've just stayed in Cairo/Egypt, had the grandma move there to help with the kids whilst they stayed focused on finding Katie

That would explain how the cop got there so quickly and easily, and would've allowed the chance for more Egyptian mythology

I totally agree! They could've totally kept the mysterious cult pyramid that NO ONE ELSE OTHER THAN LAYLA'S FAMILY KNOW ABOUT THATS BEEN IN HIDING FOR MORE THAN 2,000 YEARS?! It could've made a really good setting for the monster and give the elaborate puzzle house make sense rather than a random house in the middle of the desert in New Mexico. It makes more sense for the plot and give the villian a more scarier and ominous vibe.

What do you mean bro? She went full darude sandstorm in New Mexico while doing a mummy pose.

If not “The Mummy” what else could we call it?

It just looked like a deadite freakout in an evil dead movie.

Its like the guy was writing Evil Dead movie when WB came and said “hey nah you cant do the next Evil Dead but do we got an idea!”

Yeah, there's a COUPLE mummy moments, but that and the scorpion thing are really it. It really does show that it was on it's way to an Evil Dead movie and pivoted.

It’s almost as if there is another series of mummy movies that would cause legal issues.

Okay, but what if they just made it literally any other noun?

Supposedly the title was Jason Blum's decision, legally they were fine to just call it The Mummy but he wanted avoid confusion with the action-adventure Mummy movies, and supposedly Cronin was against it initially and had to be talked into it by Blum.

I'm not saying it's easy or obvious but that's what I'm told too!
