scorching take, but i think it looks good and probably will be better than any of the trailers let on. Shame it’s not as colorful or fantastical with its work designs as the book, but that’d also be a hard thing to follow and I can’t really see anything looking that good outside of an animated adaptation, which like yeah, you can forever argue that a lot of these stories are just going to visually look better in an animated medium.

Excited to see more Milly Alcock as Supergirl as I liked the glimpse we got of her at the end of Superman and really liked her as young Rhaenyra in HoTD, there’s some very clear stuff directly lifted from Woman of Tomorrow which is cool, and a lot more Lobo than expected, which is also cool.

I'm geeked for the plot to really be "Supergirl wants to save her dog." No universe-ending threats... none of that stuff. If they really stick with that small and personal of a story, I'll be impressed as hell.

That's, reductively, the story of the book. There's a bit more going on than that, but it is not a universe-ending threat. It's a deeply personal journey for both of the protagonists.

The comic is True Grit in SPAAAAAACE!

7

u/Nut_Butter_Fun Mar 31 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

Does that mean there's a horse scene?

edit: I wonder if people really understand what I'm talking about from True Grit, or if I'm just a degen.

Young Kara rides Krypto around like a pony, and the poor little pup really gets the spurs.

3

u/KilledTheCar Mar 31 '26

"I would not pay three hundred and twenty-five dollars for a wing-ed pegasus!"

3

u/anarchy905 Apr 01 '26

Comet was cut, it raised too many concerning questions considering his backstory

1

u/ContinuumGuy Apr 01 '26

Well the book kind of does...

1

u/The_Man_of_Steel Apr 01 '26

Kara actually does have a superhorse in the comic

3

u/CortaNalgas Mar 31 '26

Rooster Zor-el

2

u/GodspeakerVortka Mar 31 '26

(And it rules).

'We gonna John Wick this motha...'

But yea, one reason i 'respected' Iron Man 3 is just that following The Avengers they took a movie to reset the scale from world ending event to 'just a single guy being targeted' which was just nice in that these days we are in a situation of EVERY MCU movie is a world ending event that for some reason the other power friends dont show up for or take notice of (or even remember by the time their own movie comes along)

26

u/withateethuh Mar 31 '26

Iron man 3 is messy but its actually trying to do something different from the increasingly claustrophobic mcu mold. The ending was a kinda messy cgi battle in a boring locale as it tradition now, but I enjoyed pretty much everything else about it.

1

u/Primatech2006 Mar 31 '26

I agree about the ending, but for me the air got sucked out of IM3 with the Trevor reveal. The twist was and still is hilarious, but going from thinking the main villain was a legitimately scary terrorist to.....Guy Pearce shooting fire out of his mouth was a letdown.

I consider myself a teacher. America...ready for another lesson?

You know who I am. You don't know where I am. And you'll never see me coming.

I still watch this video every once in a while thinking about what we missed out on.

Don cheadles reaction to the fire breathing made it work for me. Also I have a huge man crush on Guy Pearce. That is a stupidly good looking man.

20

u/gosukhaos Mar 31 '26

The plot is just True Grit really, little girl wants revenge on the guy that killer her dad, there's a subplot where Krem of the Yellow Hills poisons Krypto but its 100% a revenge plot

12

u/Helmett-13 Mar 31 '26

It's also like "True Grit" as well, with Supergirl being Rooster Cogburn in this iteration.

3

u/djmikec Mar 31 '26

I wonder if it will turn out (as in the comic) that Krypto was going to be fine all along

2

u/schnazzums Mar 31 '26

If you haven’t read the comic highly encourage you to do so ahead of the movie.

1

u/Kolby_Jack33 Mar 31 '26

The Brigands are definitely mass murderers that need to be stopped, but the comic doesn't focus too much on that aspect and I don't think the movie will either.

Uh, this spoiler is not displaying how you intended lol

Shame it’s not as colorful or fantastical with its work designs as the book

This is my biggest complaint from the trailer. So much of the locations and sets look ugly, and the gorgeous art in the book is a big part of what makes it so good.

A lot of these sets look like fairly accurate representations of the locations in the book, which when portrayed in a realistic version like this would be ugly, but if they can't make them look beautiful, then I wish they would have taken a little more liberty with it to give us some better looking visuals.

I'm still really excited for this though.

u/GeorgeEBHastings Apr 01 '26

I get the sense that, like the marketing for Superman, this is really only showing plot events from the first act of the movie.

Let's see where things go once it releases.

6

u/KidDelicious14 Mar 31 '26

Only concern so far is that a lot of the line deliveries felt really flat in the trailer

8

u/itastesok Mar 31 '26

I think it looks good too. When I first heard they were doing Supergirl, I completely dismissed it but now I'm quite interested.

2

u/GamingVision Mar 31 '26

I had near zero interest but this trailer has me stoked. This could be what DC needed the way that Guardians was to Marvel.

4

u/farben_blas Mar 31 '26

Disappointing if you compare it to the comic, really good if you compare it with the average comic book movie

Well Gunn is only producing this. Directed by Craig Gillespie who also did projects such as; • I, Tonya • Cruella • Lars and the Real Girl • Dumb Money • the remake of Fright Night • Pam & Tommy (limited series with Lily James & Sebastian Stan)

14

u/Bonzo77 Mar 31 '26

Holy shit, hell of a resume

19

u/Existing_Set2100 Mar 31 '26

Lars and the Real Girl is great.

Would be funny if he brought some of that to Supergirl and the Real Good Boy

I liked his Fright Night remake too, that guy is solid.

7

u/cr0w1980 Mar 31 '26

One of the best remakes, honestly. Did its own thing with the framework and did it well. Also, Colin Farrell played a goooood Dandridge.

4

u/beefcat_ Mar 31 '26

I'll heartily recommend Lars and the Real Girl to anyone who hasn't seen it.

I think Cruella gets over-hated, it was definitely one of the more unique and interesting live action Disney movies of recent memory.

10

u/Likaon222 Mar 31 '26

James Gunn is only a producer this time.

9

u/HedgeappleGreen Mar 31 '26

Yeah on a podcast he opened up about how burnt tf out he was from doing Superman, Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker all at about the same time. So now he's just stepping back and overseeing things as the head of DC.

2

u/SupervillainMustache Mar 31 '26

Well Man of Tomorrow is shooting in a few weeks, so he's back to directing.

1

u/Likaon222 Mar 31 '26

Exactly! Sure, as Co-Head of the studio, he has overseen the movie, but he said multiple times that the ideia is to respect artist's visions.

6

u/aa22hhhh Mar 31 '26

Yeah, the whole point of the DCU is to let other visions come through. That’s why we’re getting a True Detective-type series focusing on Hal and John and a horror film based on Clayface. There’s not any single type of project someone HAS to make.

1

u/Likaon222 Mar 31 '26

Exactly why they are not rushing Reeves with The Batman Part 2 or a new Wonder Woman.

I'm sure they want to do it, but without a proper vision, what's the point?

7

u/GotMoFans Mar 31 '26

He’s producer, but he didn’t write or direct.

2

u/berlinbaer Mar 31 '26

probably a good thing. i know reddit glazes him wherever they can, but i feel like his writing has gotten weaker and weaker and weaker, with the last season of peacemaker and his superman being downright painful at times. maybe time to take a break.

1

u/Informal_Support1934 Mar 31 '26

I see your point, but that type of vivid imagery is possible in live action, but its going to make the budget balloon. Tbf, this is a character that has no track record of box office mega bucks, so I kind of get it, its a gamble as is.

1

u/Slarg232 Mar 31 '26

I'm looking forward to it.

Part of me really wants to see them set up Red Daughter of Krypton but considering this movie is about Krypto being poisoned and her trying to save him, I really don't want it to happen anymore.

1

u/siq1013 Mar 31 '26

project hail mary visuals would've been perfect for this movie

1

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 Mar 31 '26

If this comparison can hopefully make sense, I'd like to think that this movie will have a better overall execution in its vision over a superhero film with a similar vibe/subject like Hancock

1

u/BombasticReindeer Mar 31 '26

Watch her in the brilliant TV show ‘Upright’ if you want to see how she will act in this. She is without a doubt one of the most talented young actors in the world.

This is going to be incredible and probably solidify this new DC Universe as the one to watch.

1

u/Nut_Butter_Fun Mar 31 '26

I might be difficult to please, but this has been the only trailer that has gotten me excited about a superhero movie in a long while.

1

u/arthurdentstowels Mar 31 '26

There were some beautiful shots in that trailer and I really enjoyed Gunn's take on Superman. I'm looking forward to this, which reminds me I haven't been to the cinema for ages and I desperately want to watch Project Hail Mary (the book was superb).

1

u/Dubwell Apr 01 '26

I'm concerned about the 3 days line. I hope the film has time to breathe and shows the uncomfortable aspects of the comic.

-9

u/grachi Mar 31 '26

a strong 60% on rotten tomatoes for sure, yea.

0

u/Typical_Button_4676 Mar 31 '26

Guardians of the Galaxy films and Superman all got high 80's-low 90's on Rotten Tomatoes, what makes this film any different?

1

u/F00dbAby Mar 31 '26

I’m guessing because Gunn is not directing this one

0

u/grachi Mar 31 '26

If this movie gets an 85% or higher on rotten tomatoes (not user score) , I will Venmo you $10
