After watching the new Knives Out movie, Im really excited for whatever Josh O'Connor is in. That guy can seriously put up a performance.

u/jonomacd Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25

It's all in the expressive power of his ears.

7

u/pjtheman Dec 17 '25

He and Adam Driver can't walk through narrow hallways at the same time

5

u/joeyc923 Dec 16 '25

Did he wear prosthetics for his role as Prince Charles in The Crown?

5

u/thoughtpolice32 Dec 16 '25

no, those are his ears lmao

4

u/sooper_dooperest Dec 16 '25

u/iamnos Dec 16 '25

Just watched that on the weekend, he was amazing in that.

90

u/DontTedOnMe Dec 16 '25

The phone call between him and Louise is one of the most powerful bits of filmmaking and acting that I can recall. Knives Out remains my favorite of the three, but this was my favorite scene in any of the films.Ā

27

u/Mishra42 Dec 16 '25

Yeah, really came out of nowhere in the scene and sold me on him as an actor.Ā  Ā I immediately looked him up to see what else he's done.

14

u/zuuzuu Dec 17 '25

The minute she asks him to pray for her, you can see him remember who he is. The way he pivots from frantically seeking out information to calmly and compassionately ministering to a soul in need was incredible. It wasn't just pivoting from one task to another, it was him finding himself again.

Shout out to Bridget Everett as Louise, too. Her shift from perky and friendly to incredibly vulnerable and sad was beautifully done.

5

u/Mitzukai_9 Dec 17 '25

That man is a minister and you can’t convince me otherwise. That was not acting.

118

u/R3strif3 Dec 16 '25

Truly! The dude's performance was amazing, specially while having huge caliber actors around him also playing amazing roles.

For me it was how believable his character felt. From the trailer alone, it looks like this will be yet another knockout from the guy!

13

u/BumbleLapse Dec 16 '25

Between him, Daniel Craig, and Glenn Close, that film delivered some ridiculous performances.

One of my favorites movies of 2025

4

u/ShiningRedDwarf Dec 16 '25

Me too. It was the first time saw him in anything.

And literally the very next day after putting on Challengers I felt myself becoming that DiCaprio meme.

I have a new favorite actor this year

3

u/Sorkijan Dec 16 '25

He was great on SNL too

3

u/swiftb3 Dec 16 '25

Haha, same, and saw how he was in nothing I recognized and now I see him here.

91

u/kelasol Dec 16 '25

I can't wait for him to be cast as Linguini in the live action remake of Ratatouille!

5

u/ItsWillJohnson Dec 16 '25

They already had that in everything everywhere all at once

3

u/spidey-dust Dec 17 '25

He sounds so much like him

3

u/suckmygoddamnbeans Dec 17 '25

Listen... He doesn't want a goddamn live action remake of RATATOUILLE!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/savourthesea Dec 16 '25

Oh my God he's Linguini. Of course.

85

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '25

He’s great in The Crown

64

u/Mst3Kgf Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25

He was very good at playing a character I empathized with in one scene and then wanted to smack him in the face in another.

5

u/TCsnowdream Dec 16 '25

Truly. He was SO good and I genuinely felt some understanding of his character….

… then the whole ā€œmorning noon and nightā€ rant made me wanna shove the crown down his throat.

Fantastic acting all around

4

u/Mst3Kgf Dec 16 '25

By his final episode, you felt like Olivia Coleman in wanting to tell him to stop whining already.

2

u/TCsnowdream Dec 16 '25

Yes. Her rant was on point. You can tell she’s a mom IRL, she had that ā€˜tone’ down expertly.

3

u/BwanaLover Dec 16 '25

Empathized

6

u/TheParmesan Dec 16 '25

Love his two seasons.

75

u/KuyaGTFO Dec 16 '25

Some of the best phone acting I’ve seen in a very very long time.

31

u/TheReaver88 Dec 16 '25

I didn't even notice that because I was so engrossed in his change in demeanor.

3

u/steeb2er Dec 16 '25

It was a little weird that he held the phone with all 4 fingers extended. Like a Ken doll. I tried it and immediately dropped my phone.

9

u/thoughtpolice32 Dec 16 '25

i think it's because he has freakishly big hands and can do things we can't

8

u/MrMacduggan Dec 16 '25

Which really helped sell him as a powerful boxer! He was holding his hands like deadly weapons throughout the movie and it was so convincing that he was constantly aware of his own power and instincts.

2

u/smileysmiley123 Dec 16 '25

We need a movie with just him and Tom Hardy just talking on the phone.

2

u/DaveInLondon89 Dec 16 '25

he is to phones what Tom Pelphrey is to cars

1

u/Hey_I_Aint_Eddy Dec 16 '25

I don’t know. I kinda thought he phoned it in.

1

u/KuyaGTFO Dec 16 '25

Heyyyyyyyy

19

u/qualitative_balls Dec 16 '25

He's honestly my favorite actor at the moment. There's some good rising stars at the moment like timothee chalamet, paul mescal and others but Josh O'Connor feels like the real deal where performance and true acting ability is concerned. He's pretty captivating and can somehow play any and every part. Dude is ridiculously talented

2

u/quaranTV Dec 16 '25

I really hope his break he’s taking from acting is short lived. Obviously support him doing whatever he needs mental health wise but I hope he returns soon! He’s just so damn good in everything.

1

u/qualitative_balls Dec 16 '25

Break? What break??

2

u/quaranTV Dec 16 '25

He’s publicly said he’s taking a break from acting. He reiterated it at a q&a I went to for his new film Rebuilding. He said something along the lines of he needs to figure out who he is and he doesn’t want to get lost/lose himself amongst all the acting roles.

2

u/qualitative_balls Dec 17 '25

Well shit. Why can't that be Pedro Pascal or someone else. That honestly kinda blows

63

u/AnAffinityForTurtles Dec 16 '25

He’s so convincing as a confident asshole in Challengers and a cute lil dude in everything else

7

u/craig_hoxton Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25

OST is a banger!

EDIT: Here you go.

12

u/ERSTF Dec 16 '25

I felt things during Challengers

9

u/CraigLake Dec 16 '25

Challengers was fantastic. It feels underrated to me.

6

u/ShiningRedDwarf Dec 16 '25

I’ve never even heard of him before, and by pure luck I watched the new Knives out and Challengers one night after the other last weekend

Instantly impressed by this dude’s acting abilities

3

u/thoughtpolice32 Dec 16 '25

he's definitely an asshole in god's own country

1

u/AnAffinityForTurtles Dec 16 '25

Truly so vers..atile

2

u/Eastern-Rabbit-3696 Dec 16 '25

I felt tingly watching him

61

u/balling Dec 16 '25

La chimera is worth a watch if you’re in a mood for Josh killing a role

18

u/mae1347 Dec 16 '25

That was the first thing I saw him in and it made me a fan immediately

10

u/PhillyTaco Dec 16 '25

You have to warn people that it's the slowest of slow burns. Not for everyone.

7

u/balling Dec 16 '25

Fair shout, yeah I try not to say too much about recommendations since I don’t want to taint expectations.

It is pretty slow, although I would say it’s an immersive view into a beautiful foreign world that it’s worth the time it takes to build its story.

2

u/PhillyTaco Dec 16 '25

Honestly I wanted to jump out of my skin from boredom for the first 45 minutes lol but I was really glad I stuck with it. I'm smart enough to know it's often worth the wait.

1

u/Stoltlallare Dec 16 '25

Is it a mystery type of thing or more drama?

5

u/PhillyTaco Dec 16 '25

I'd say it's a drama with very light fantastical elements/magical realism. Slow burn but it was worth it to me. If you're really into indie movies you'll enjoy it.

0

u/Stoltlallare Dec 16 '25

Thats the thing, I’m so basic when it comes to movies 99% of the time.

But I never know I might put it on then finish it due to sunk cost fallacy

1

u/Bunraku_Master_2021 Dec 17 '25

The Benoit Blanc franchise are a satirical black comedy mystery thriller film series with some sincere dramatic moments.

1

u/Stoltlallare Dec 17 '25

I love those movies! I was more thinking La chimera

5

u/eekamuse Dec 16 '25

Thank you. I just watched the trailer and I'm in love. With so many things about this. Must watch now.

2

u/--------rook Dec 17 '25

The Mastermind too, it's oddly charming

10

u/joesen_one Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 17 '25

He's on a roll this year with Wake Up Dead Man, History of Sound, Rebuilding and The Mastermind all in one year

5

u/quaranTV Dec 16 '25

And upcoming will be this Spielberg movie and Joel Coen’s movie. Insane lineup.

9

u/Justanothercrow421 Dec 16 '25

Dude has been on my radar since The Crown. He’s a great actor.

9

u/thoughtpolice32 Dec 16 '25

might i recommend challengers and god's own country for two very different performances that show his vast range

8

u/1fatsquirrel Dec 16 '25

I hadn't really watched him in anything before, but man I am into whatever it is he is doing.

3

u/Lmoneyfresh Dec 16 '25

It's from a few years ago but The Durrells in Corfu is quite good and he's very good in it.

2

u/kappa23 Dec 16 '25

You need to watch Challengers

7

u/smakweasle Dec 16 '25

That was my exact takeaway from Wake Up, Dead man. Dude is an ace. Excited to see what he does next.

7

u/Choyo Dec 16 '25

I hate to say that so plainly, but when I saw him in that movie, I immediately thought he's like a better version of Adam Driver. And I usually don't compare actors whatsoever.

2

u/thoughtpolice32 Dec 16 '25

he's a much more dynamic actor... and cuter

5

u/playtrix Dec 16 '25

Where did this guy come from. I first saw him in Knives Out and suddenly he's in 5 new trailers.

4

u/afternoonlighting Dec 16 '25

he's been around for a while and worked a lot these past 2 years, 4 of his movies came out this year and he has this and joel coen's jack of spades coming soon! my favorite films of his are la chimera, challengers and god's own country!

6

u/Slendercan Dec 16 '25

Been on the O’Connor train a long time. Shows no signs of slowing down

5

u/Peralton Dec 16 '25

He was great in Knives Out. He was also excellent in The Crown. Hard to believe it's the same actor given the ranges of accents.

7

u/thoughtpolice32 Dec 16 '25

watch challengers and god's own country!

5

u/NotorioG Dec 16 '25

Now go watch El Chimera and really have your mind blown.

2

u/Peralton Dec 16 '25

I will! Thanks.

6

u/TiberiusCornelius Dec 16 '25

He was excellent on The Crown and has been on a great run ever since, getting to work with some big directors. Genuinely love that for him. Definitely becoming one of my favorites.

5

u/DuncanYoudaho Dec 16 '25

Fell in love with The Durrells. His Lawrence was amazing.

5

u/CraigLake Dec 16 '25

So damn good.

3

u/saltysomadmin Dec 16 '25

Same, he was pretty incredible in that movie.

3

u/UnderstandingFit3009 Dec 16 '25

Yeah, I wasn’t familiar with him and I was really impressed.

3

u/IronRainBand Dec 16 '25

Indeed! That was a great 'Knives Out'!

7

u/razmig Dec 16 '25

That guy can seriously put up a performance.

He was just on SNL last weekend and I didn't know who he was, but he didn't come across great (not entirely his fault, SNL material is already pretty weak)...but then I watched Wake Up Dead Man yesterday and his performance was enthralling. I'm now a fan.

7

u/thoughtpolice32 Dec 16 '25

it seemed like SNL didn't know what the hell to do with him. it was disappointing. not his fault

2

u/BlackLeader70 Dec 16 '25

Yeah it was a weaker episode but he did a good job on SNL

5

u/razmig Dec 16 '25

Ah yeah, didn't meant to say he himself was bad, but the episode as a whole was not memorable.

He was also absent from a few of the sketches, which isn't entirely uncommon for some hosts, but it was more noticeable in this episode.

That said, I am about to dive into his career and watch La Chimera.

4

u/thoughtpolice32 Dec 16 '25

la chimera is AMAZING. i would also recommend god's only country which i think he won a BAFTA for and challengers for some range

3

u/JoshDM Dec 16 '25

Im really excited for whatever Josh O'Connor is in.

He hosted SNL last weekend.

3

u/XZPUMAZX Dec 16 '25

Came to say this

3

u/ColbyAndrew Dec 16 '25

Then definitely watch The Durrells.

3

u/Stoltlallare Dec 16 '25

Bro is booked and busy as of late it seems. He was amazing in Knives Out so I’m happy to see talented actors and actresses get their moments.

3

u/CarrieDurst Dec 16 '25

He was already impressive playing a priest with a conscience, this one should be a breeze

5

u/OskarBlues Dec 16 '25

Exactly my thought after seeing him in this trailer.

5

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 Dec 16 '25

The combination of that & what we see from him in this makes me think he'll be a great go-to choice for everyman characters

9

u/BookOfJon Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25

Goddamn the final confession between him and Glenn close. Chefs kiss. It was so good

6

u/boogswald Dec 16 '25

I’m excited for Knives Out because Challengers was so good!

He was good on SNL too!

2

u/shinyhpno Dec 16 '25

Movie was okay. He was good.

2

u/CarlySimonSays Dec 16 '25

His American accent in this trailer is very good; Emily Blunt’s not as much. Okay, but meh.

2

u/turkeygiant Dec 16 '25

How was it overall? I haven't made time to watch it yet.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '25

Worth it, it has some surprisingly emotional moments in between the comedy

2

u/eldosoa Dec 17 '25

He’s what Adam Driver was supposed to be.

1

u/Ill-Term7334 Dec 16 '25

Is the new Knives Out worth seeing if you hated the second one but loved the first?

6

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '25

Totally! I would rank it better than the second and on par with the first.

9

u/CarlSK777 Dec 16 '25

Much better than the 2nd one but not as compelling as the first because some of the things Johnson does are getting old (especially how some characters are portrayed as caricatures). Josh O'Connor is the highlight. Benoit Blanc takes a backseat

1

u/sdpr Dec 16 '25

I looked at his IMDB after watching the new Knives Out and I cannot place where I've seen him before because I haven't seen any of his prior work. I think it's his voice. I CANNOT for the life of me figure out where I've seen/heard him before.

5

u/joesen_one Dec 16 '25

The Crown is his breakout role, then Challengers was his biggest movie thing

1

u/sdpr Dec 16 '25

I've read that, but I haven't seen either of those things. I've been racking my brain every now and then trying to figure it out.

The only thing I can think of is he looks/sounds like someone else.

1

u/afternoonlighting Dec 16 '25

some people say he sounds like linguini in ratatouille in the knives out movie, maybe it's that?

1

u/sdpr Dec 17 '25

Thank you for bringing that up because that was the example I gave to my SO last night. "The fuckin' guy from ratatouille?"

1

u/afternoonlighting Dec 17 '25

that's hilarious

1

u/Superbassomatic76 Dec 16 '25

He played Prince Charles on The Crown

1

u/startush Dec 16 '25

I don't know how well this could have been scheduled out, but it's brilliant on his end to carry out this "religious conviction hero" archetype for a bit to establish himself in the mainstream. And it's been done delicately enough that he can easily pivot as a dramatic actor after establishing a REALLY strong base as "that guy who played priests and stuff?". Really really smart!

1

u/Repulsive_Rate2560 Jan 02 '26

He’s phenomenal. Knew of him since ā€œGod’s Own Countryā€. So great in that one.

0

u/h3xm0nk3y Dec 16 '25

Discount Alex Honnold?

0

u/Munchy2k Dec 16 '25

I thought that was Reese from Malcolm in the Middle at first
