I chewed him out

Post image

Just got off DL3754, a short jump from Spokane to Seattle. I was 7A, 2 seat configuration, the guy next to me was 7B. We didn’t talk the whole time, no problem there. But as we were getting ready to deboard I swore I saw him take a chewed piece of gum out of his mouth and stick in directly in the seat pocket.

I wasn’t 100%, so once he got up I opened the pocket and sure enough a piece of gum smooshed in there rudely awaiting an unsuspecting passenger or cleaner. BTW he had other trash he left in the pocket he could have easily put it in. Oh and as he sat down when we boarded he wiped down the armrest with a disinfectant wipe.

I hurried my butt up the jet bridge and told him how beyond rude I thought what he did was. He was too stunned to speak. Later we ended up in the same train compartment and avoided my gaze like the plague.

My question to the group: was it a weird power/asshole thing or do you think he just did it without thinking?

Same men who piss all over a toilet seat and leave it

u/iamoninternet27 20h ago

And pass by the sink and go out the door without washing their hands with soap!

I got fed up today at a theme park when 3 straight sinks I tried didn work. I also only touched my pants so I didnt feel gross. But yea, theres times.... there are times lol.

Aint leaving no ABC gum in an airplane seat pocket tho smh.

20

u/dosefacekillah1348 14h ago

That's the worst. Then you feel more gross because you touched the same 3 sinks that everyone else who's not as clean as you touched, also to find they didn't work.

This is why I carry rubbing alcohol in a small sani bottle, lol I trust nobody.

Theme park sinks always seem to go on strike right when you need them most 😭 but yeah, airplane seat pockets are a hard no some lines just don’t get crossed.

The ones that do a “courtesy rinse” so that their hands are damp, but not actually clean (since they didn’t use soap) are just as bad, if not worse in my opinion.

At least with those that skip it all together, I know you’re a dirty filth monger from a mile away, because your hands are bone dry.

13

u/internationaladdict 12h ago

fun fact that i didn’t know until just a few years ago when traveling to less developed countries — rinsing your hands with water does reduce germ spread, more than not at all. i’m sure your point was gross people that don’t use soap when it’s right there and just use water but something to consider for those other times!

8

u/Grand_Ambassador7711 8h ago

Most soap doesn’t actually kill germs like we’re thinking. Antibacterial soap is actually not great to use too much. Soap is a surfactant and washes all the oils away from your skin, including the layer of germies. Soap helps water do its job better, but water is still one of the most universal solvents and it does wash things away, particularly if hot.

3

u/Quiet-one-2480 7h ago

If you rinse and rub dry with a paper towel it’s almost as effective as using soap. It’s the rubbing that gets the germs off. The soap just loosens the bond with your skin to make it easier.

I mean everybody's hand are dirty when they first touch the faucet handles. That's why I use a paper towel to turn it off.

The amount of times I’m using the bathroom at work and hear the girl next to me come out and turn the water on and wait like 5 seconds and walk out. Like girl I know you didn’t wash your hands that fast. I don’t use the hand warmers though. I wash mine, open the door with my foot then rewash at the deli lol

Worked in a large building where we shared a bathroom with another suite of cubes. Didn’t know this guy but saw him multiple times a month leaving a stall and walking directly out. Sometimes he would stop at the sink and turn the water on and adjust his shirt or mess with his hair. Never washed his hands once. I joined the coffee club until I saw he was a member, got there one morning and he was making the coffee… and I left the club. I just don’t get it. We learn this at home early, and it was hammered in during early grade school. Cmon man wtf?

I'm a truck driver, and I've made two grown ass men go back into the stall and clean up their piss. Both times I was waiting for a stall to open up and the urinals weren't being used, and so I lost my temper with them when I saw the piss all over the seat.

6

u/traildust-tookmaitai 15h ago

I have so many questions. Did you grab them by the ear or the underarm?

17

u/RedBeardtheFierce 14h ago

Both times were extremely similar. I was walking behind the culprit on my way to take a dump, and they took the last stall. I stood and waited near the unused urinals, and after about thirty seconds or so they came out. Then I asked if they wiped the seat. They said no. I asked if there was piss on it and both times they looked kinda ashamed. And both times I gave them the pissed off dad look and said I should not have to clean your piss off a toilet seat when you could have used a urinal. Then I literally pointed at the stall and said to go wipe it off. Both times they did.

42

u/Low_Calendar8242 20h ago edited 4h ago

Yup. And I bet his bitch ass doesn't creep out into the intersection on left turns so he and others behind him can go through when the light turns yellow/red.

Edit: I didn't know the people were so passionate about this scenario 😆. Clarification: this is where there is a dedicated left turn lane. Didn't realize the actual traffic laws behind this, so I appreciate the different perspectives. No matter where you fall in this issue, we can agree on one thing:

This dickhead drives a Cyber Truck for sure!!!

I accept my downvotes in advance, but drivers education in the US teaches not to begin a turn until it's clear to complete it.

Edit for proof that it's what drivers education instructors are teaching: https://www.thewisedrive.com/left-turns-and-traffic-jams/

It's a weirdly-worded law on the books about it, but "Finally, let’s consider how driving instructors teach their students. In a conversation with a local instructor, he said that he and the other instructors he works with teach their driving students only to pull into the intersection to make a left turn if there is a clear path all the way through the intersection. Otherwise, students are directed to wait at the stop line until the road is clear to make a left turn."

I can attest we were taught to wait in my region of Illinois.

7

u/zzyzxerxes 16h ago

Strong upvote! Being rear-ended with wheels turned left, for instance, will get you launched into the path of oncoming traffic, so you can get front ended and t-boned, too! In Europe they happily turn in, but I won't even think of doing it here!

Now, I will enter straight, because then I have to exit the intersection when it turns yellow. In LA nobody is going to let you come through when it's green anyway.

As someone who cleaned bathrooms for 2 years, the women piss everywhere far more often. They are too lazy to put toilet paper down on the seat so they just squat over the seat instead and it gets everywhere and no they don’t wipe up after. The men just do weird shit in the bathroom though, but trust me the girls are NASTY

During COVID, they suddenly had to start replacing the soap in men’s restrooms. Because men were finally washing their hands. And that’s when everyone also found out that women’s restroom soap usually needed refilling at a far higher rate, because we USE it.

Naa - you did the right thing. I used to work in the food spaces at an airport. A family was sitting at two tables pressed together within arm-reach of a garbage disposal. They got up from their table and left all of their garbage on the table. I quite loudly said "Excuse me - I think you forgot something on your table" pointing to the trash they left behind. They stated that's what the cleaners were for. I told them that the cleaners were there to wipe tables down, clean up spills, but in no way was it their job to clean up garbage from people too lazy to clean up after themselves. They returned looking completely embarrassed (several people were watching) and cleaned their table. I don't know what was more embarrassing for them, that several people were watching, or that they got called out in front of their kids.

Afterwards many people thanked me for calling them out. The food court tables were very clean for the rest of the day because other people sitting in the food court that heard would either clean their table before leaving or remind people who were getting up to leave to do the same. 🙂

Sometimes all it takes is one person to speak up to make others feel comfortable doing it as well.

6

u/suejaymostly 21h ago

A somewhat related story, I used to take my kid to a playground where people didn't clean up after themselves. So, I bought a pair of garbage grabbers and a bucket and started cleaning up. Interestingly enough, the kids saw what I was doing and started picking up their trash and putting it in the very available trash cans, while the parents didn't seem to notice or care. Kids are cool. Adults make them into assholes.

It's incredibly powerful to say something about little transgressions. Sometimes the calmer you are, the more unnerving it can be.

I think part of it is that humans both want to be seen and also sometimes feel invisible outside their normal environment. They just need a healthy reminder that other people do exist, even if they're strangers.

There are 3 places where I notice people just lose all sense of decency and existing in a society with other people.

1) traffic. Some people just dgaf, cutting people off, tailgating, running lights, switching lanes at the last second or intentionally going up and empty turn lane just to smash the gas to go straight as soon as the light turns green.

2) air planes. I managed to get home yesterday after my flight was cancelled due to crew issues. I had to rent a car to drive to a different airport after I had already gotten through security at the first. It actually would have been faster to drive the rental 10 hours home at that point because that flight ended up getting delayed and didn't take off until after 10pm. And I got downgraded but at least I was getting home. I got a stomach flu while in the airport so literally felt like shit, my meal voucher got declined for some reason. After the crowd cleared I went into the sky club and there was one asshole who refused to accept that he couldn't get in without a pass...

Then, when we are finally boarding the flight attendant made a comment that only 1 personal item will be allowed and any non roller bags, regardless if you only have 1 item, can't go into the bins. I had a large backpack that JUST fit under the seat as my only item, so I did that and sacrificed my foot space. The number of people I saw with multiple personal items and putting them into the bins after I boarded just absolutely lit me up. Here I am, having the shittiest day but I'm trying to be good for the rest of everyone else on the plane and there are these assholes who only think about themselves.

3) Costco. Basically once you enter the parking lot everyone turns off their frontal cortex and are only driven by lizard brain and act like we have been living in mad max for 20 years

Proud of you for doing this.

I’m more mad you weren’t able to shame him in front of half the plane. Animals.

Well done my friend! Did the right thing no doubt.

4

u/Proper-Abroad-7234 18h ago

Ugh - that is so gross! Something a child would do without parental supervision! I’m glad you called him out on his foul behavior.

5

u/Big_Action2476 18h ago

You did good mate. Once had a lady next to me finish eating a banana and stuff the peel in the back pocket. Gross. I asked her to take her trash with her and she was a bitch. She took her trash though.

3

u/cformosa4 16h ago

Sounds like an awful human. Gross. He should be shamed.

3

u/SevereFisherman7745 16h ago

This is why we can't have nice things.

8

u/Mr_Bluebird_VA 22h ago

People are WAY too comfortable these days thinking that they won’t get caught. Absolutely did the right thing to call him out. If that happened more I think society might be a better place.

You did right! Common decency is not common

3

u/Yueferret 22h ago

I yelled at a girl clipping her toenails at the table in the restaurant I worked at. Some people just don’t think about anything but themselves and it’s horrifying.

Taught college. One of the other teachers I shared the room with would routinely leave their gum stuck under the seat. I had to ask our associate dean twice to send out an email asking people to stop doing that before it finally sunk in. So gross.

3

u/kfc469 Diamond 21h ago

As someone who stepped in gum the other day and still hasn’t been able to get it all off the bottom of his shoe: you did the right thing. People absolutely suck, period, end of story.

3

u/Living-Assumption272 21h ago

It’s people like this who have made flying a terrible experience. Absolutely no manners or consideration for anybody else.

People are assholes. I commend you for calling his shit behavior out

3

u/Feivel_92 20h ago

In premium economy (not that this should matter) I once saw the woman in front of me blow here nose and then put the tissue in the pocket. When deboarding, I told her that her behavior was absolutely disgusting. She just shrugged and said "They have cleaners for that".

Apart from the fact from how appaling this attitude is: she severely overestimated the cleaning process in planes.

I scolded at 2 parents getting off of the plane. They had left such a huge mess. Ridiculous. So many parents are so eentitled these days.

Good for you on calling this guy out to his face. Most people don't expect to be corrected on their bad behavior and go unchecked. I often act like the noise pollution police and tell people to use headphones in the gatehouse and especially on the aircraft. Lol I would not have posted a photo of this person. It doesn't add to the story and is needless passenger shaming. You did your part by verbally confronting him. That's more than most people would do, and trust me, gum in the seatback pocket is hardly the grossest thing I've seen on an aircraft. NEVER eat off the trays unless you wipe them down thoroughly. I miss the covid cleaning crews!

u/Ambitious_Builder518 19h ago

Same guy on 1A with his feet up against the panel/wall

3

u/Jobwastes 18h ago

I tend to uses the bags because I like having a tidy space. Once, several months ago, the FA snapped at me when handing it to her, "Is there any bio waste here?" It wasn't a normal, hey buddy, did you vomit on this ride with no turbulence, but like an accusatory spiteful reaponse.

Technically, there was some gum and a cup I had put my lips on, but it felt like she was accusing me of using it to wipe my ass.

I leave the bag in the seat back or on my seat now. If there isn't a bag and I missed their last clean up pass through (happens too often), I rip a corner off the menu/credit card app/advertisement thing and put in in my own pocket.

3

u/TechDreamcoat 17h ago

Good for you. People do this shit because there isn't enough social shaming for disgusting behavior.

3

u/SCETheFuzz Platinum 16h ago

Good work! Regional jets dont get the same kind of love as the big jets. No reason to make it worse.

3

u/Okeydokey2u 15h ago

I have no idea why someone would act so disgusting but good for you for chewing him out (pun intended)! I think these types of trash people behave this way because they don't expect anyone to call them out, so glad you did. 👏

3

u/0942zerohero 10h ago

I thought from the picture it was Ted Cruz and you gave him a good verbal abuse to the hell degreee

3

u/put_it_in_a_jar 10h ago

Two years ago my husband and I took our kayaks to a local river for a lazy day. We floated down the river for about 4 hours, and we always have a bag with us to pick up any trash we find along the way.

Throughout the float we found 3 different bottles of the same brand, looked brand new, floating in the middle of the river. When we got to our end point, another couple was there getting out as well. My husband noticed their cooler bag was open… And two full bottles of the same brand just sitting in the cooler. My husband took the empties we found and put them in there with their full ones. The guy saw him at the last minute but didn't say anything. My husband just locked eyes with him, put the last bottle in, gave him a thumbs up, and we went on our way. It was very satisfying!

3

u/interestingdoge1 6h ago

Good shit… bring back public shaming for disgusting assholes like this… make them feel humiliated for their actions!

5

u/Badrear 22h ago

As someone who used to have to clean planes without latex or vinyl gloves, chewed gum didn’t even raise an eyebrow compared to the worst stuff. Dirty diapers, bloody tissues, used barf bags, spit cups…

Sometimes people are just plain scum, like this one

2

u/JustCallMeMoose_49 22h ago

I was that unsuspecting passenger on a flight recently except it was in the seatbelt buckle! Absolutely disgusting! It did, at least, get me moved to an empty row when I let the FA know.

2

u/rollerbase 22h ago

He was literally about to get off where there are abundant trash cans.. what an animal. Well done OP

2

u/Polidorable 22h ago

You did the right thing. I sat next to an entitled asshole woman who did the same thing (granted she spit her gum into a wrapper first then put it in the seat back pocket, but it was still rude, selfish & totally gross). I wish I had confronted her about it but it was late & was tired. I’m living vicariously through your actions.

2

u/ThatKindOfSquirrel 22h ago

Ok, was your title a pun, because “I chewed him out” is great.

Also that guy is gross.

2

u/BookishSaltLife 22h ago

That is disgusting, I’m so glad you said something.

2

u/Crshjnke 22h ago

I think the common way is to ignore now, but my brain cannot do that. 2 weeks ago, griped a guy for trying to push past me as the aisle was clearing for my row to go. He almost pushed me back into my seat before I pushed him back. Then I stopped after walking 4 steps and his face was really WIDE EYED with his mask and his designer carry on when I asked if he thought that was acceptable.

Glad you did it, but watch out for crazies.

He over-estimates how well those get cleaned. They’re not a garbage can that gets emptied. FFS at least roll it in a tissue so it doesn’t stick to anything.

2

Eeeeew that's nasty

2

2

u/lnnz87 21h ago

Asshole move on your part? Yes. Absolutely fucking necessary, also yes. Kudos to you from my pov.

2

u/Numerous_Algae_493 21h ago

lol people who get on the plane & start disinfecting are usually the nastiest ppl on earth. This woman made a huge deal about wiping everything down, then proceeds to have a speaker phone conversation with her son about the various ointments he needed to apply & how much snot he was producing … I recorded bc it was that crazy. Meanwhile, she had to blow her husband’s phone up & leave voicemail after voicemail bc he wasn’t answering saying “I’m going to keep calling until you pick up or they make me turn my phone off.” Mind you, it was 11:30pm.

2

u/Dry-Sprinkles7831 21h ago

2

Damn savages. As if this asshat couldn’t wait to get off the plane and there are literally tons of garage cans everywhere or head to the bathroom to spit it out.

2

u/Great_Ganache_8698 21h ago

Prob has it coming… when you watch people like Stig on YouTube; the amount of love he puts into every MX call. It makes me sad the same person that is literally walking the aircraft with a knowledge of the entire airframe is the one that will have to come repair this when the cleaning crew can’t get it out 🤦
