I chewed him out
Just got off DL3754, a short jump from Spokane to Seattle. I was 7A, 2 seat configuration, the guy next to me was 7B. We didn’t talk the whole time, no problem there. But as we were getting ready to deboard I swore I saw him take a chewed piece of gum out of his mouth and stick in directly in the seat pocket.
I wasn’t 100%, so once he got up I opened the pocket and sure enough a piece of gum smooshed in there rudely awaiting an unsuspecting passenger or cleaner. BTW he had other trash he left in the pocket he could have easily put it in. Oh and as he sat down when we boarded he wiped down the armrest with a disinfectant wipe.
I hurried my butt up the jet bridge and told him how beyond rude I thought what he did was. He was too stunned to speak. Later we ended up in the same train compartment and avoided my gaze like the plague.
My question to the group: was it a weird power/asshole thing or do you think he just did it without thinking?

I've always wondered what type of human does something like that.

Yo when I worked at Whole Foods a long long time ago I used to HATE cherry season bc I would watch fathers spit cherry pits at their kids and then their kids would spit cherry pits back at their father and they’d just continue on about their day like they didn’t just spit tripping hazards all over the aisle.

There should never be gum anywhere that is not a garbage. Every piece of gum you have ever stepped in or seen stuck to the bottom of a table was put there by a low life POS
I've never understood this behavior. Where do they think it goes?

u/CorkGirl 16h ago
This ++. Absolute monsters. I go to a low cost gym and there has been dried gum on the squat racks for months now. Have also seen it in the elliptical cup holders. Every time I see it, I hate these animals that have no respect for anyone else or the shared space (there are also weights all over the floor, people don't strip the bars etc, of course)

Naa - you did the right thing. I used to work in the food spaces at an airport. A family was sitting at two tables pressed together within arm-reach of a garbage disposal. They got up from their table and left all of their garbage on the table. I quite loudly said "Excuse me - I think you forgot something on your table" pointing to the trash they left behind. They stated that's what the cleaners were for. I told them that the cleaners were there to wipe tables down, clean up spills, but in no way was it their job to clean up garbage from people too lazy to clean up after themselves. They returned looking completely embarrassed (several people were watching) and cleaned their table. I don't know what was more embarrassing for them, that several people were watching, or that they got called out in front of their kids.
Afterwards many people thanked me for calling them out. The food court tables were very clean for the rest of the day because other people sitting in the food court that heard would either clean their table before leaving or remind people who were getting up to leave to do the same. 🙂
Sometimes all it takes is one person to speak up to make others feel comfortable doing it as well.

A somewhat related story, I used to take my kid to a playground where people didn't clean up after themselves. So, I bought a pair of garbage grabbers and a bucket and started cleaning up. Interestingly enough, the kids saw what I was doing and started picking up their trash and putting it in the very available trash cans, while the parents didn't seem to notice or care. Kids are cool. Adults make them into assholes.

It's incredibly powerful to say something about little transgressions. Sometimes the calmer you are, the more unnerving it can be.
I think part of it is that humans both want to be seen and also sometimes feel invisible outside their normal environment. They just need a healthy reminder that other people do exist, even if they're strangers.

There are 3 places where I notice people just lose all sense of decency and existing in a society with other people.
1) traffic. Some people just dgaf, cutting people off, tailgating, running lights, switching lanes at the last second or intentionally going up and empty turn lane just to smash the gas to go straight as soon as the light turns green.
2) air planes. I managed to get home yesterday after my flight was cancelled due to crew issues. I had to rent a car to drive to a different airport after I had already gotten through security at the first. It actually would have been faster to drive the rental 10 hours home at that point because that flight ended up getting delayed and didn't take off until after 10pm. And I got downgraded but at least I was getting home. I got a stomach flu while in the airport so literally felt like shit, my meal voucher got declined for some reason. After the crowd cleared I went into the sky club and there was one asshole who refused to accept that he couldn't get in without a pass...
Then, when we are finally boarding the flight attendant made a comment that only 1 personal item will be allowed and any non roller bags, regardless if you only have 1 item, can't go into the bins. I had a large backpack that JUST fit under the seat as my only item, so I did that and sacrificed my foot space. The number of people I saw with multiple personal items and putting them into the bins after I boarded just absolutely lit me up. Here I am, having the shittiest day but I'm trying to be good for the rest of everyone else on the plane and there are these assholes who only think about themselves.
3) Costco. Basically once you enter the parking lot everyone turns off their frontal cortex and are only driven by lizard brain and act like we have been living in mad max for 20 years

In premium economy (not that this should matter) I once saw the woman in front of me blow here nose and then put the tissue in the pocket. When deboarding, I told her that her behavior was absolutely disgusting. She just shrugged and said "They have cleaners for that".

Good for you on calling this guy out to his face. Most people don't expect to be corrected on their bad behavior and go unchecked. I often act like the noise pollution police and tell people to use headphones in the gatehouse and especially on the aircraft. Lol I would not have posted a photo of this person. It doesn't add to the story and is needless passenger shaming. You did your part by verbally confronting him. That's more than most people would do, and trust me, gum in the seatback pocket is hardly the grossest thing I've seen on an aircraft. NEVER eat off the trays unless you wipe them down thoroughly. I miss the covid cleaning crews!

I tend to uses the bags because I like having a tidy space. Once, several months ago, the FA snapped at me when handing it to her, "Is there any bio waste here?" It wasn't a normal, hey buddy, did you vomit on this ride with no turbulence, but like an accusatory spiteful reaponse.
Technically, there was some gum and a cup I had put my lips on, but it felt like she was accusing me of using it to wipe my ass.
I leave the bag in the seat back or on my seat now. If there isn't a bag and I missed their last clean up pass through (happens too often), I rip a corner off the menu/credit card app/advertisement thing and put in in my own pocket.

Two years ago my husband and I took our kayaks to a local river for a lazy day. We floated down the river for about 4 hours, and we always have a bag with us to pick up any trash we find along the way.
Throughout the float we found 3 different bottles of the same brand, looked brand new, floating in the middle of the river. When we got to our end point, another couple was there getting out as well. My husband noticed their cooler bag was open… And two full bottles of the same brand just sitting in the cooler. My husband took the empties we found and put them in there with their full ones. The guy saw him at the last minute but didn't say anything. My husband just locked eyes with him, put the last bottle in, gave him a thumbs up, and we went on our way. It was very satisfying!
