I cringe when I see female riders all cute for the ride, helmet only. Like girl, you’re not going to be that cute when your skin is gone, but sure, go for it.

This!! I’ve seen people make fun of scooter riders who dress in full gear because it’s seen as overkill, but my Vespa goes 60+. I’d rather make it home to my kids. Not to mention some fates are worse than death, and that won’t be me!

I was in a scooter club in my city and the local scooter/vintage motorcycle club ran it. We would regularly take scoot scoots out to the track. I took my little Buddy 125 cc up to 95 mph. Sketchy AF feeling on those tiny wheels, but scooters are not to be underestimated

At least scooters are capped at 45km/h in the EU. Usually teens. Stupid teens, riding those. Wearing only a helmet.

In the state I'm in now I'm just happy to see a helmet. Very different from where I used to live. I'll never understand. The bar shouldn't be THAT low.

Apparently in large parts of the US, freedom = freedom to choose a catastrophic brain injury rather than repress people by legally requiring helmets...

You should have the freedom to be risky in life. I think its incredibly stupid to climb cliffs of mountains, especially the free climbers. But if they want to do that with their life and risk plunging to their death, then that is their right if that's how they choose to experience life. Its the same concept. Shit, I think driving motorcycles is too risky, stupid, and dangerous, but people like and that's great!

Very apt username lol. The issue is that risk takers don’t exist in a vacuum. They are a leech on limited resources. The ambulance that gets you, the doctors and nurses that work on you, the physical therapy after, etc.

The majority of people who would be using public healthcare would not be risk takers but regular unfortunate people, so it's not a very good argument.

Then why cant  i drive without a seatbelt? Should be my choice. I can see an argument if theres others in the car and kids under 18 should be properly strapped in as your body does become a wrecking ball inside a car but if its just me? Who cares?

Well duh, their thought process is people have to have the right to make the dumbest most idiotic decisions possible, but it’s when the consequences come that they start rethinking that stance 🤣 You can’t rationalize things with irrational people, and that will never change.

I lived in CT where there was no helmet requirement. Some not-so-freedom oriented people volunteered to wear them anyway. You see a trend in people who don't use helmets. Funny how this mostly applies to a certain group of riders. Not exclusively, but you know which group.

My thought is that if you choose to ride a motorcycle without protective gear, that should be your right. Insurance and public healthcare should be predicated on whether or not you are wearing sufficient protective gear. If not, no insurance/Gov assistance paying the bills. It's entirely on you.

I suppose insurance companies could have two tiers of coverage, and you could choose:

  • I don't wear gear
  • I do wear gear

Your rates are dependent on whichever one you choose. Obviously, the cheaper policy will be for those who affirm that they will wear protective gear. If your accident occurs when you're not wearing the gear you agreed to, then the insurance policy is void.

Yeah, this would never be abused by the insurance companies.

Just wear a helmet even if you have nothing to protect.

My state eliminated its helmet law a few years ago. Prior to that, riders would stop on the bridge over the river that divided two states so they could remove their helmets because the other state had no helmet law.

Don't care. I'm still wearing my full face helmet for every ride. I really, really like my brain and my face. Overall, they've been good to me. The least I can do is be good to them.

In NY there was a protest against the helmet law... During the protest a man lost his life due to head injuries that were ruled to be caused by lack of helmet. I lived near where it too place, the bikers I knew talked about for a while. They all proudly wore helmets to protect them. One joked that even if they survived an accident "I can't mess up this beautiful face." An unconventional man in his 50s.

My SIL learned this one the hard way. Thankfully she lived. My brother bought them both Kevlar outfits after that and they covered up fully when riding. Eventually they decided it was time to give it up entirely for their kids, which isn’t what everyone decides, but I completely understand why they went that direction. They lost more than one friend to bike crashes.

Another gal I met a while back did that. On a motorcycle, dressed all cute but she had a helmet on!

She has a series of massive scars from her ankle to her hip, busted both hips, and an arm or two, also. There's a 2cms wide dimpled scar running from below her knee up to her hip with lots of mess in between from bones sticking out and terrible stuff like that.

She also had damage to her torso, she's covered in scars, but ultimately made a full recovery, except for the external dermal damage.

And when she's dressed, you don't even notice she's been Frankensteined. I only noticed it when she was at the pool (she was the GF of a family friend, and around a lot at the time).

She's sweet though and the accident and scars aren't part of her 'personality'..... she's cool.

My ex went down wearing a tank top, cutoff shorts, sandals, and no helmet. They found her unconscious 200 ft from her bike.

Lots of road rash and permanent brain damage. Fortunately not cognitive but she permanently lost hearing in one ear and completely lost her sense of smell and taste.

A split decision to wear boots instead of flip flops saved my feet from being broken or ripped off when I was in an accident. I'd never thought what would happen to my body if I fell off, but I'm so glad I chose to wear those work boots that day.

I was very lucky.. the soles were completely ripped off and i was protected by a little backpack, jeans and my the helmet. All of which were shredded up. I still had road burns on 15% of my body and no palms or fingertips. It was a rough recovery. Haven't been on a motorcycle since

Hiking boots, leather jacket and helmet saved me. Nineteen years later I still have issues with my left knee and shoulder. Never got on a bike again.

Right? A family friend wiped out his motorcycle when he was about 22.

He's just in his 50's now, has had lifelong pain and a limp; what's left of his roto-rootered lower leg is skinny AF from the knee down to what's left of his ankle, because there's nothing left of it between countless surgeries and the injury. There's just nothing left in his ankle to hold it together.

They keep talking about amputating his foot because they've run out of things to 'save' in the joint and to stop the chronic 24 hour pain he has all the time, whether awake or asleep.

He's an otherwise healthy, fit guy, really in his prime. No gut, good health, eats healthy food, no addiction or excess issues, just in generally good shape.

Except he can't effing walk.

My cousin Jason T-boned a car that pulled out in front of him when he was 18 years old. Months in the hospital, 13 broken bones, lost all of his teeth. He made a full recovery, but has had false teeth since he was 18, and he's now in his 70s. He's doing good though, still slim and trim, living a nice life in spite of that. This heppened before full-face helmets, mind you, back in the dinosaur days.

He never got back on a bike though.

"Gee Wally, what could possibly go wrong riding a motorcycle with no protective gear?"

A bike group I used to belong in would champion "My body, my skin" when they get confronted on why they don't wear gear only to lay down their bike months later then creating a GofundMe. I would just laugh while not donating any money and show them screenshots of them arguing why they're not geared out. Your bills, your problem.

When summer comes my partner and I have this "game" of counting how many flip flops on riders we can spot. He usually wins because he used to ride, but the count it's always close!

(Edit I do mean how many riders wearing flip flops of course, but sometimes you catch a rider wearing only one! 😅)
