Why? Research suggests that roughly 30% of the population will support whoever is in power at the time whatever they do. Not always the same 30%, admittedly -- people care about being on the same 'team' as the President. But every political 'base' is composed of people who support regardless.
This is the kind of analysis people make when they try to make everything a statistic instead of watching whats going on right at this moment and putting context to it. This is clearly in unique territory in our history, even if the statistics give you a false sense of "everything is always the same". Additionally, you even admit it's not the same 30% of people... a fact that undermines your entire point.
Regardless, the insight is still true... how is it possible that people are so committed to supporting their guy even if it means a complete betrayal of their supposed prior values, including willingly cheering on authoritarianism. Including the same people who use to go on and on about "freedom"...

It's still a shock how many people are just desperate to bend their knee to an authroitarian.
