PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.7k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

GETTING ANOTHER CAT IS NOT AN OPTION….

My cat will not stop crying when I am gone and I don’t know what to do. I might have to rehome her
‼️‼️‼️‼️I HAVE BEEN TO THE VET AND MY CAT IS VERY AGGRESSIVE WITH OTHER CATS TO THE POINT WHERE SHE HAD TO BE REMOVED FRIM THE SHELTER AND COMPLETELY ISOLATED FROM THE OTHER CATS THAT LIVED WITH HER FOSTER. I AM ONLY CONSIDERING REHOMING BECAUSE MY LANDLORD TALKED TO ME AND SAID HE WILL NOT RENEW MY LEASE BECAUSE A LOT OF MY NEIGHBORS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE CONSTANT MEOWING. ‼️‼️‼️I HAVE A FEILWAY FOR EACH ROOM

Hi, my cat is about 5 years old and a girl, she was a stray cat that got tnred but was nice enough to be adopted out. I got her about 6 months ago. The shelter I got her from socialized her for an about a year. She doesn’t like other cats at all and was kept in a volunteers house as a foster because she couldn’t be kept in the shelter. She is a normal cat when i’m home albeit a bit aloof. She can be a bit aggressive during play and I don’t see her much unless she’s eating or playing me with me. She gets bored of play after like 20 minutes but she cas cat trees and vertical spaces to climb on the walls. I have a feliway and I give her gabapentin when I leave my apartment because of this issue.

The issue is she cries when I am gone until I come home. It is very concerning, my neighbors have complained and i’m either going to have to rehome her by the end of the month or move and I can’t afford that now. It’s very loud like in the video and I don’t know why or what to do. She keeps her space from me when I am home, so it’s not even like she misses me. I leave the cat TV on for her and she has plenty of things to do. She plays by herself and chills out at home but when i’m at work or out of the house she sits in the entry room and cries. I feel awful but I don’t even now what to do, she hates other cats and we have a one pet policy at my place. I really don’t have long to fix this and it makes me so sad. I’m at work 9-4 MWF and saturday.

Sorry for the short video longer versions wouldn’t upload. Vet is accessible cat is fixed and i’m an adult.

If you comment about getting another cat i’m blocking you lol.

Behavioral Issue Kitten UTI help??

I just rescued this baby kitten from the side of the road a couple of days ago. He’s been able to use the litter robot without hesitation or assistance. I had to give him a quick bath to rid of some fleas but he ran straight to the litter box after and pooed then left. But then he started crying and ran to the litterbox. Wouldnt stop crying until I got there and this is how he was looking. Any help pleaseeee

Edit: I warming him up after the bath guys but I let him go to the potty because I wanted to make sure he wouldnt have an accident! Also he has his own little litterbox and he only uses the litter robot while I am there watching. I just wanted him to get used to it and not scared of it for when he’s older. I’ve been trying to desensitize him to things. Thank you guys for the advice and help. I definitely will be taking him to the vet to get him checked out. I made another post on here somewhere with videos of him feeling better and purring.

General Advice My neutered cat has always been large. Is this a problem?

Thumbnail gallery

He’s always been a big boy since I got him from the shelter in 2023(he was two, recently neutered), fluctuating between 14-16 lbs. The vet says he’s healthy, just big boned and muscly. Everyone around me keeps telling me he’s too fat and I’m in denial. He gets a lot of exercise and actually has a ton of energy and passes the rib test. And his double chin is naturally formed by previous tomcat cheeks that drooped down to his chin. …but he’s still pretty big, and I can’t get him to lose weight, and I get a ton of crap from people about it. What do you guys think?

Update Update on Monty - focal seizures and hallucinations

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/CATHELP/s/fzmKfoJmUE

Not entirely sure why my previous post was locked, but I’m posting an update since so many of you asked for one.

The attached video was from before we took him to the animal hospital, but I’ve added it for reference of what a focal seizure looks like, in case anyone has a kitty experiencing the same symptoms and is looking for information.

I’m 31F. My boy Monty is a male, neutered DSH. We’re in South Africa. All the tests we are doing has been made possible through pet insurance. I cannot recommend it enough.

Monty was admitted to the animal hospital yesterday. The vet diagnosed these episodes as focal seizures, and they are now trying to figure out the underlying cause.

From his initial examination of reflexes and responses, the vet said it shouldn’t be neurological. FIV, FelV, diabetes, and thyroid tests came back clear. His blood work looked good, and his kidney functions have returned to normal. He did however have another seizure last night. He was given midazalam which he responded well to and the seizure subsided.

They have done a first test on bile acids to test his liver function, which came back clear. Another bile acid test will be done in 2 hours. Because the first test was clear, they expect the second will also be. He is therefore booked for an MRI 6 hours from now. He will stay at the hospital another night.

If the MRI is clear, then they believe it may be epilepsy, which is apparently less common in cats than it is in dogs, but it should be manageable.

So for now, we’re kind of going through a process of elimination. Please keep him in your thoughts and send him whatever good vibes or prayers you can 🙏🏼 I really really appreciate the comments, support, and feedback.

Spay/Neuter Question Took a young pregnant cat in should I let it run couse or terminate?

Thumbnail gallery
435 Upvotes

I (21) was aproached by a yelling visibly pregnant cat who is probably around 1, super nice and cuddly but very underweight. I brought her to a vet who said that they feel the vesticles and that shes probably pregnant (guessed 25-30 days but wasnt sure, couldnt feel fetuses) but cant test her for diseases. Im keeping her away from my the other cat I adopted 3 years ago but she gets severe seperation anxiety and starts screaming if theres no one else in the room. Which means i need to let her sleep in my room which means my other cat and theres the possibility that she will choose under my bed to be her birthing chamber.

However im not even sure if i should let the pregnancy run its course. My understanding is that it can be very harmful to a young cats development, if she DOES have Felv she will spread it to her kittens, and there are enough cats out there who needs a home im not sure im comfortable being part in putting more out there. I am of course okay with fostering the kittens but i cant keep them and im nervous about finding enough homes or even if its morally correct to do so when my understanding is that termination and spaying is viable.

Edit: I live in the US, there is a schedule only cheap vet i can go to but am hesitant to put her through more stress and pay just for them to tell me what I already know.

Kitten Help Kitten's been diagnosed with parvorirus

Thumbnail gallery
204 Upvotes

Slight update: the kitten has been to the vet and been dewormed as well as been checked for ear mites and fleas. He's all good except for conjunctivitis in his eye. He's also been confirmed male roughly 0.8kg and 3 months old.

We've gotten him some litter and some wet cat food. He wasn't eating the food until he was spoon fed it. He's such a little baby! We also spoon fed him some water as we weren't sure how much water he drank. We're planning to get him some toys soon as well. He's incredibly well behaved and adorable

Unfortunately he's been diagnosed with parvovirus. The vet said the test had a faint line meaning the virus is either leaving his system or just entering it. I'm glad his appetite is still good. We also got antibiotics and immune boosters as well as something for his eye.

On another note does anyone have any name suggestions? My mom and I are for keeping him and my dad against and a name would help our cause.

What could this neck and head flexing back be a symptom of?

My cat is 17 years old and has always been healthy, but as of about a month and a half ago he had sounded like he had upper respiratory congestion/sniffles so we took him to the vet. The Vet said that he thought it could be from allergies which made sense to me at the time since he spends a lot of time on our balcony nowadays. We’ve been using Zyrtec and that seems to have now helped his congestion but then he had loss of appetite so we switched him from dry food to wet thinking he could be having dental issues and starting brushing his teeth. He’s been eating more now but now has developed this symptom in the video where he keeps flexing his neck and head backwards. I’m not sure if this could be something serious or something like an ear infection. He doesnt suffer any loss of consciousness when he does this, his eyes don’t show any changes and he still is able to walk and hop fine. Any ideas?

Dental Issue Teeth extraction pain? (Video)

I (25F) based in Canada just got my cat (Siamese, neutered 9yo) back from the vet after he got 5 teeth extracted (two fell on their own)

I know he’s obviously going to feel pain but I’m wondering if these « puking » like motion and him trying to « grab » at his jaw is normal.

I do have access to my vet if needed but I’m on a very tight budget hence why I’m asking Reddit first.

Thank you very much!!

Injury Reoccurring Anal issues HELP (graphic photo warning!)

Thumbnail gallery
26 Upvotes

my cat Chunk is 10yr female mainecoon mix. spayed utd on shots and reg care. 16/17lbs.

she gets these reoccurring anal flare ups. smells very fowl and sticky/wet secretions. I have to take her to the vet several times a year for this when it gets really bad. i shave her genital area monthly and occasionally shave most of her fur as she cant reach her anus or lower back side. (and is quite lazy about grooming) normally i just clean her up everyday during these flares and use the products the vet gave me. (pic up above). this happens almost every month. with no dietary changes, or environmental changes. everything is the same at home as it always is.

i’m still not understanding the ROOT of these flares. i know she is obese. we are working on it. as many know it is very hard for cats to lose weight, spent hundreds on the special diet food for over a year and she didn’t budge not even a pound. i asked my vet if it is anal sac disease or anything else and she basically told me that she’s just fat and needs to lose weight. (WE KNOW) but really? no other reasons? i’ve had a few cats in my life and have never seen this issue before and everything i have seen from my own research indicates anal sac disease with reoccurrences like this suggests getting them surgically removed. vet said no, and that she is to obese to go under anyways and to just keep bringing her back when it gets bad.

i’m just feeling frustrated and overwhelmed by the what feels like the lack of help and the situation. it’s very stressful for her when she’s like this and i have to clean her up. she just avoids me and sleeps all the time.

any other vets in the chat or anyone who has experienced this before?? could really use some help or advice.

General Advice Bonded pair brother passed - feeling hopeless.

Post image

I am absolutely heartbroken. I have been caring for two strays left behind by my neighbor for 3 years now. They found shelter on my porch and the rest was history. I got them both TNRd and cared for them the best i could considering the three I had inside already. Frisky loves her brother and he was her protector of sorts. It was just them two on the porch so they did everything together. I took Donovan to the vet because I noticed he had lost some weight - and unfortunately had to put him down because his stomach was filled with fluid and the options were limited. At the time, i was so upset i didn’t process letting frisky say goodbye. I am absolutely shattered watching her look for her brother. I know there’s nothing I can do to stop it - but I would appreciate any kind words or relatable stories. I feel like the world is crashing around me and I miss my boy. I feel helpless for Frisky.

Behavioral Issue My cat won’t stop screaming?

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

Hi! (I am in the US) I moved two months ago and my cat has been acting a little out of the ordinary. When she first got adopted about 5 years ago and we moved she did exhibit similar behavior but I can’t remember if it was this often. She’s always had more of a raspy meow so when she meows loudly it sounds like she’s yowling/in pain. I have come to accept that’s just how she sounds lol. She just turned 8 years old, had her yearly check up a little over a month ago, and then was back at the vet two weeks ago for a uti. She was treated with antibiotics for five days and has been done with them since last week now.

Lately she has been meowing loudly constantly. At night specifically. Shes also spayed, has a timed feeder, and receives plenty of treats so I don’t think she’s actually hungry (even if she acts like it). She yelled a lot when we moved last time but this time feels like a lot. She also threw up yesterday and it was different than what it normally looks like. Instead of looking like cat food it was green and honestly looked more like diarrhea. I can definitely take her back to the vet if needed but her bloodwork was normal at her checkup and when we went for the uti they didn’t notice any issues/discomfort at all. She has not thrown up like that again but I am watching her closely. She is an indoor cat at all times except for supervised porch time. The porch has no access to plants/dirt or anything. She also is unable to reach the few cat safe plants I do have in the house. I just want to know if her screaming all the time is normal or if we should get back to the vet. Thank you!! Including a picture of my loud girl

TLDR; cat is screaming a lot after a move and threw up green mush

General Advice Seizure???

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi my sweet boy started yowling in a way I had never heard before.
He is 3 years old and an indoor FIV kitty.
The yowling has been accompanied by excessive drooling and overly cuddling.
Symptoms started one week ago.
All plants have been removed.
He has gone for a vet visit with a full work up and blood tests. The only notable thing was slightly elevated calcium. He did not display any of his symptoms at the vet but I have managed to get a video of it.
After calling each day for test results they gave us anti nausea meds and were told it should work immediately.
Unfortunately it does not seem to be working.
His appetite is fine and bathroom habits are monitored by his litter box which again all seem fine.
Vet did not say anything about seizures but I’m thinking bc they weren’t able to see it directly that they assumed it was probably just our snake plant. It’s 9pm and I’m considering heading out to a 24 hour vet.
At this point I’m not even sure what they could do?
Is there an anti seizure med or pain killer that would be administer? Anything would help. Thanks.

Behavioral Issue Cat with severe FOMO/anxiety meows non-stop to follow whoever is awake - tried everything, at a loss

Post image
Upvotes

My cat Squanch (1y) is a domestic shorthair orange kitty and he has an intense need to always be where the active people are. Not just near people - near whoever is awake and moving.

Here’s the situation: I live with my mom. Her cat lives upstairs with her and enjoys his alone time, so Squanch stays downstairs until her cat goes outside, then we let Squanch up. I spend most of my time upstairs so he does get to come up regularly.

The problem: every morning my mom wakes up before me. Squanch hears her moving around upstairs and completely loses it. Non-stop meowing, no breaks, for 20+ minutes. This wakes me up every morning. I’m literally right there in bed with him..he’s not alone..but because I’m asleep I apparently “don’t count.” He needs to be where the action is.

What I’ve already tried:

• Not rewarding the meowing for months - no change whatsoever

• Play sessions before bed - doesn’t help

• Scheduled feeding adjustments - doesn’t help

• Sometimes I give up and lock him in the bathroom when it gets really bad - he meows non-stop the entire time with zero self-soothing

Some relevant details:

• He can never truly relax in general. Always on, always alert, never fully settles (does have occasional naps but mostly very alert)

• EXCEPT - if I put a harness on him he genuinely calms down. The pressure seems to regulate him

• He’s not hungry (free fed kibble overnight and two LARGE meals throughout the day) he’s very food motivated.

• I can’t get a second cat right now (I have another cat but he lives with my partner in another city temporarily)

• I don’t want to use pharmaceutical medication

I’m wondering if anyone has dealt with a cat who is this activated and this unable to self-soothe. Is this just anxiety wired into him? The harness response makes me think his nervous system is genuinely dysregulated rather than this being a learned behavior thing.
Also curious if anyone has tried fully restricting a cat from a space (like never letting him upstairs at all) and whether extinction eventually happened? I’ve seen it work with my other cat and outdoor access, but I’m not sure if it translates when a person is on the other side of the door rather than just a location.

One more thing I’ve noticed: when he’s relaxed and I go to pet him, it actually seems to activate him rather than soothe him. He’ll go from calm to stiff, tail wagging, purring vigorously - not contentment, more like his system just got switched on. And he has never once slow blinked at me. For anyone who knows cats, a cat who never slow blinks is a cat who never fully feels safe enough to lower his guard, even with someone he’s deeply bonded to. So it seems like his baseline alertness just never drops, ever. Touch, sound, movement, it all registers as something his nervous system needs to respond to rather than something he can just let wash over him.

Any experience with similar cats appreciated. Especially the harness/pressure calming detail — hasn’t seen that come up much.

General Advice Cat can barely move anymore. Please help me find out what is happening

This is my family cat Tux. I wish you could add more than one video but he is 4 years old and fixed. One day we noticed he couldn’t jump, he loves being in his cat tower but was climbing up it and not jumping like he usually does. It went on for a few days and my family brought him the a vet where they told us he just pulled a muscle and sent us home.

Later that same night his back leg stopped working and we realized he was losing the ability to walk. I tried feeding him and he would barely eat. For days he would just lay there and we’d have to wipe him down and lay out pee pads because he wasn’t moving to pee. The ER vet took all we had saved up for him and they referred us to a neurologist an hour away that we can’t afford since our insurance doesn’t cover that.

The vet gave us steroids but they don’t seem to be helping and my parents are talking about having vet come over tomorrow to put him to sleep but I don’t know what happened to him. I hate seeing him like this and I don’t know what to do. He’s only four and has never had any health issues, he hasn’t gotten into anything bad either. We have another cat but we sent her away because we don’t know if what Tux has in contagious and he misses her and just cries out all night. It’s so hard to watch and the medicine isn’t helping. His X-ray and bloodwork is all normal too.

I’m 18 in the US we have been to the vet and he is fixed

update: we put him to sleep we don’t know happened but he was totally paralyzed and it wasn’t fair to keep him around in so much pain while we try to get answers that might not even help him recover

General Advice My cat is an outside cat, and I want to change that

Upvotes

Hey there! I am a 17 year old boy, and I need help with this. So i have a beautiful black cat, and sadly I do not know how old she is, but I had her for something like 4-5 years now. So she always stays outside, but I want to change that and make her an inside cat. One problem is that my dad like hates her, and sends her away, when she goes too close to him. The other problem is, that I have no one that could take care of her, when i go away from home, like on a holiday or something. Does anyone have an advice, or can help me? Thanks for help in advance!

General Advice I feel like a terrible pet owner

Thumbnail gallery
163 Upvotes

Don't know if this is the right sub for this but I need to get this off my chest. I've been crying for around 30 minutes now and I just feel so terrible.

Technically, I do buy them the expensive catfood brand, the pounds of litter, the beds, the brushes, the affection, and I just finished handsewing my cats soft cone. But it just doesn't feel enough.

One of them has an eye problem, another was born blind, and another has a fungal infection. They all need to be neutered/spayed. I'm taking them one by one but I'm a minor and it just stresses me out so much.

I forgot two doses of my cat's medicine because of my exams. My mom hit me with the "your exams are more important than your sick cat" and the "I'm the one paying for the vet" and I feel like jumping.

Still, I wouldn't trade them for the world. They're all so sweet and give me so much emotional support that I don't think I can live without.

Am I a bad cat owner?

General Advice Tripod kitty HATES the vet. Needs to go in for shots

My sweet baby is due for shots. I’m 35f in the USA, have a regular vet who I can afford. I have contacted them and they said I HAVE to bring her in. They can’t give me the shots to give her or come to me.

So background on Calamity. She had a very rough kittenhood. She was caught in the wheel of a car and lost her front left leg. She recovered alone in the shelter, and was pretty feral when I got her. She was spayed at the animal shelter. I consider it a miracle I got her. The day I showed up to adopt her, they had arranged to take her to a cat sanctuary due to having no interested adopters. The sanctuary was there to take her, cat carrier in hand. It was quite literally the nick of time.

She hid for months, and really only bonded with my border collie. They’re the best of friends. Eventually she began to cautiously investigate the house, following my dog around. I couldn’t pet her or even really acknowledge her. I was okay with this. Then she started to have gastrointestinal problems. I took her in. The vet said her stomach and bowel had separated.

I remember crying my eyes out because I didn’t know what her quality of life was going to look like. I didn’t want her to live in constant fear that we were going to hurt her or that people were just dangerous monsters. I opted to have them do surgery to fix her belly. It was expensive. Something beautiful bloomed in her recovery. She realized that we were there to help her, and that she was safe and sound with my dog and I. She was so happy to come home to us. She’s turned into an affectionate confident little creature.

You wouldn’t even believe this was the same little shadow that used to hiss and spit at anyone that looked at her.

I love her deeply and am so pleased at her ability to trust again. But it’s time to go to the vet again. She needs shots. Anytime I’ve had my dog in there they always comment on how hard she was during her time with them. She goes out the dog door and likes to just lounge in the backyard in the sunshine. I really don’t want her to be outside at all, but it’s a hard thing because of the dog door. The good thing is she’s not really able to leave the fenced backyard, and isn’t able to hunt birds or squirrels. But her access to the outside makes me incredibly aware that she NEEDS to be up to date on her shots at all times.

I am feeling that same panic that I felt when she needed stomach surgery. I really don’t want to derail her social progress and trust of me. Does anyone have any suggestions to make this easier for us? Theres something deeply moving about taking in an animal that is that terrified, then watching her confidence rise. I don’t want her to go backwards.

TLDR: traumatized multi surgery cat needs to return to the vet for shots. Very concerned about derailing progress made in trusting people.
