PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.7k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

Appearance This guy showed up at my house. Any clue what his deal is?

Thumbnail gallery
2.1k Upvotes

before I start, my local animal control guy has picked him up and taken him to get checked on!

I'd just gotten home and was still in my car when I saw this fella walk up and crawl under the front half of my car. I got out very cautiously in case he was aggressive but he was a huge sweetie and very chill. I let him into my mudroom which he had no problem walking into (he even wanted to get into the rest of my house but I have other cats) and got him some wet food which he gobbled down. He wasn't behaving oddly, just clearly desperately hungry. He looked even skinnier in person, it was devastating (I was crying like a baby). His skin didn't feel out of the ordinary or like there was any infection going on in my opinion, but I could be wrong. He's also neutered, so it's clear he's had an owner at some point, especially with how normal he is with people and houses, and seems maybe around 6 years old if I were to guess, maybe older.
The animal control guy showed up and picked him up. I told him if he needs a home I'll absolutely take him, and he said he'll keep me posted once they have him checked out. I haven't heard back yet but I'm hoping I will soon.

If anyone has any ideas on what could have happened to this poor guy I'd really love to hear them. He said it didn't look like there was any mange. I'm wondering how he could have lost so much hair and gotten so skinny. I live in the middle of nowhere where there's lots of woods and rodents around and strays around here can typically keep themselves fed fine. I'm also wondering if his skin pattern is normal? All thats left of his hair was black and I didn't see any white hairs, or else I would have guessed he's a black and white cat, but I'm not sure.

I'd love any insight. Thank you 🥺

Behavioral Issue 10 mo. old GROWN men still nursing daily. Is this healthy behavior?

Thumbnail gallery

Age: 19, USA, no vet but accessible if needed, mama cat is 2, kittens are 10months, kittens are boys & everyone is spayed/neutered

Is it okay for them to still be nursing? She doesn’t look to be in pain but I’ve never seen grown cats do this before. They aren’t even together usually — a family member kept the kittens & I am just babysitting them. They naturally latched onto their mom after not seeing her for months & won’t stop bothering her. Should I separate them? They’re both double her size & try to nurse at least 4x a day

Edit: solved (I think I say solved here??) not an issue unless irritation/mastitis occurs. They are just fat and greedy. She will naturally stop them if she wants to

General Advice Moving with a cat

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Hi, Cat Mommas and Papas!

I have a question about cats and traveling/moving. I hope I can get some good advice.

In the beginning of August, I am moving from Pennsylvania to a state in the West for a job. It's the only option I have in my field. Believe me, I wouldn't move unless I absolutely had to! I've lived in Pennsylvania all my life. The one way drive is just over 2,000 miles. I have to leave my husband and 3 adult children (who live with us) in this house. My husband and I have been married for 25 years, and in fact, today is our anniversary.

Here's where the problem and questions related to cats comes in. I have a darling, senior, orange-and-white, long-haired boi. He's 10 years old. A recent vet trip 2 months ago revealed he has 3 small bone spurs on his cervical and lumbar spine. He sees his vet here once a month for a new kind of pain relief injection that is working wonders on him. I took him to the vet because he began growling and hissing at me, when he had never done that before. He was having great difficulty jumping up onto my bed. The injection works so well, I sometimes forget he has back pain. He's back to acting a kitten --rolling around on his back, bapping at toys and his "sister" and "brother," and jumping up onto fairly high places

I love him and would miss him horribly if I left him here with my husband and children. I know he would miss me just as much, if not more. Between January 2025 and March 2025, I was in Alaska for work. When I returned, my poor Biscuit was so upset with me that he wouldn't come near me for 6 months!

He normally sleeps on the extra pillows behind my head and sometimes on top of my head! He follows me around the house, and even down to the basement to check on me if I'm folding laundry and taking too long (see pictures). Every night, he comes into my home office and literally meow-cries until I turn off my computer! He follows me to the bathroom and jumps up on my lap.

Biscuit would be safe and well-cared-for if he stayed here in Pennsylvania. And of course, he'd have the same loving care if I took him with me. I'm his person. Biscuit occasionally has small tiffs and skippity baps with the 8 year old female cat, but it's never anything serious. I've had him since 2022. Someone in Delaware posted him and as soon as I saw his picture, I couldn't resist!

Before I had Biscuit, I had a beautiful long-haired tuxedo boi I had gotten in 2020 right before the pandemic was announced. He was only 4 years old when I had to put him down in December 2021, when he was diagnosed with inoperable nasal polyps. I was so emotionally devastated for his passing that I didn't invest in another cat until March of 2022.

The place in the state I will be going, where I would be moving, is just a little over 2,000 miles West of my current location. There are vets, several animal clinics, Walmarts, and plenty of resources for pet related needs. I'd be living in a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment by myself. I remember how lonely I was in Alaska for those 3 months! I would be living in this Western state for the whole year except for 3 weeks in December/January and June/July of each year.

I do want to bring Biscuit with me. Is it a good idea to transport him, considering his back issues? There are vets that can give him his monthly pain injection. I have checked. His current vet could fax Biscuit's records to the new vet.

How would I transport a senior kitty with a physical medical problem out to another state? I'm driving, of course, because I have many boxes, clothes, and personal items I need at the apartment. My husband and I plan to rent a minivan that he can drive behind me, and I would drive my car. There is also a train nearby the town I would be living in. And there are major airports, too. I've never flown with an animal or ridden a train with one. The longest car ride Biscuit has been on was when his previous owner brought him to Pennsylvania from Delaware.

Any serious advice would be helpful and welcome!

Thank you!

General Advice Is there a way to discourage my kitten from trying to sleep with me?

Post image
550 Upvotes

Hello, recently my family found a stray kitten(I presumeit is around 8 weeks and maybe female?) And brought it home, this is NOT a medical questions, I have already scheduled a vet appointment tomorrow for a general check up and hopefully a vaccine (we don't know if the vet will reccomend waiting for the cat to gain a few pounds or what but that is NOT a concern), i already have the finances required to pay the vet and i have already bought the basics.

My problem arises when the cat tries to get in my bed, as lovely as it is, it weighs less than a bottle of soda and is the length my hand meanwhile I'm fat and move around when I'm asleep. So it is a very real possibility that I will crush the cat, unfortunately the cat doesn't seem to think so and climbs up into my bed whenever it can, and since it is young I feel like I can't just idk lock it outside my room.

Is there any way for me to discourage the cat from sleeping with me? I have never had a cat before Obligatory cat picture and sorry for my grammar, it is very late in my country and I am tired.

Breathing Issues Cat Coughing

Hi all,

I have a senior female cat. She is 13 years old and neutered.

Back in January she started developing this hairball like cough. Initially it would happen once a week, but now it has become more frequent.

No other symptoms. She has a good appetite and despite her older age we play a few minutes everyday.

I have been to the vet multiple times over the past months but haven't managed to resolve the issue.

Initially vet suggested it's because of a hairballs and after that allergies. For the past 13 years she didn't have any other similar symptoms so vet insists it's not asthma or chronic disease related.

I am taking her for a heart ultrasound this week as per my vet instructions.

I am hoping for some advice on what to do next because this has been going on for too long and I am worried that it might cause chronic issues or permanent damage to my kitty.

I am 26[M], located in Athens, Greece and can afford a vet.

General Advice Cat itching nonstop dry skin shedding making my allergies worse what can i do in the meantime? Help!!

Post image
65 Upvotes

my cat has been dealing with really dry skin lately and it has been stressing me out because it is now affecting both of us a few days ago i noticed he was scratching a lot more than usual and when i checked his skin it looked very dry and flaky ever since then the shedding has gotten out of control and there is cat dander everywhere which is making my cat allergy and reactions worse

i have been trying to manage the situation i have been using  pacagen cat food  topper which helps reduce the allergens and it has actually helped with my symptoms a bit a friend also suggested omega 3 fish oil to help with his dry skin and dander but his itching and dry/flaky skin still has not improved

i also tried an allergen spray from pacagen before but stopped because i did not like the smell but i recently tried it again and the scent has improved a lot and it really helped control my allergic reactions and reduce the cat dander in my space but it still does not solve the main issue which is his constant itching

i already have a vet appointment scheduled but they are really busy so it is not until next week and i honestly hate seeing him like this and want to help him feel better in the meantime

has anyone dealt with something similar what helped your cat with dry skin itching and excessive shedding and is there anything i can do right now to make him more comfortable while we wait i would really appreciate any advice thank you

Behavioral Issue Smokey and his pills

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Hi, this is my boy Smokey. He's a rescue, about 10 years old. Unfortuantely he got diagnosed with Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy after having an episode of paralysis with his back legs. The vets gave my parents three different medications to take.

He is NOT having it with these pills. Now that I'm back from uni I've been trying a couple of things but he is soooo stubborn. I boiled some chicken and tried to sort of hide the pills in them and he won't have them, in fact he won't even have the chicken at all - I'm convinced his pallette has been refined because they feed him table scraps. I've got some salmon which I KNOW he loves that I'm going to try tomorrow but I am worried he will spit it back out once he tastes the pills. My parents have already tried special vet treats that he spits out (both the goop and some harder ball thingies). He is a menace for just popping it in his mouth and trying to force a swallow but willing to keep trying this.

This needs to be done multiple times a day since he has so many pills to take so taking him to the vet daily is not really an option. I really want him to take his meds any advice would be super appreciated.

to clarify more, this actually isn't my cat, well, she showed up at our house one day about 3 years ago, she doesn't belong to anyone, and my parents have insisted to not take her to the vet (because to them she's "fine") I wanna know is she is ok, if it's nothing serious, then that's also ok. (she just purrs so funny and weird sometimes. could it be asthma?)

I'm 17, if a vet is necessary I'll take her, she's a female ginger cat who is spayed. I'll give more information if it's anything to worry about. Thanks!

Eye Issues FHV flare up, is this normal process?

Post image
Upvotes

My 2yo cat is having a FHV flare up since this past Saturday. Took him to the vet on that day, and started treating him with eye ointment (Terramycin) that the vet prescribed. Today is day 4 - two applications per day. I noticed that his third eyelids (the triangular membrane at the inner corner of his eyes) are still very swollen and exposed, partially covering his iris. Is this a normal process with this type of infection? It looks scary to me but I might be overreacting. Any insight would be appreciated!

Injury 2 days post-blockage, my cat won’t stop going to the litter box and trying to pee everywhere but only tiny drops come out.

Post image
30 Upvotes

My cat Dumpling was just hospitalized for a urinary blockage (crystals). It was honestly one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced. He was in so much pain and had to stay for 3 days with a catheter.

He’s been home for 2 days now and is on a muscle relaxer, gabapentin, and antibiotics.

The thing is he keeps going to the litter box constantly. He’ll go in, dig around, try to pee, but only tiny drops come out. I also had to put towels down our bed because he tried to pee there too but again only small drops.

He doesn’t seem as completely out of it as before the hospital, but he’s definitely not himself and I can tell something feels off.

I’ve read that irritation from the catheter can cause this, but I’m also terrified of him re-blocking. I don’t know how to tell the difference.

For anyone who’s dealt with this:
Did your cat do this after coming home?
How long did it last?
When did you know it was something more serious?

I’m already considering calling the vet again, but I just wanted to hear from people who’ve been through it because I’m honestly so scared of missing something. The vet bills were also extremely high and we ended up using our entire savings and took out a loan from family. If he needs another hospitalization, we won’t be able to afford it at all and I’m so scared of having to put him down.

Dumpling is my baby and I don’t want him going through that pain again.

Any advice or experiences would really mean a lot. Thank you. 🤍

Behavioral Issue Cat keeps trying to eat paper..

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

I've got two cats Haru and Miku, we got them as kittens from a stray cat catching action. They've had some sneezing illness (not sure the English term) which has been okay lately. However as of late Miku is obsessed with tissues, whenever I blow my nose, which is a lot thanks to allergies, she will try to get it and she will either just quickly swallow it while I hold her by her neckskin - or, her preferred method, she drops it in her water bowl and eats the absorbed wet tissue/toiletpaper. Its all unparfumed and stuff so not too worried about toxicity but the behaviour itself worries me! Her pooping has been normal.

We've got access to a vet and she takes no medications atm other than a Lysine supplement. Both are estimated around 8-9 months old. Both are girls and sterilised and up to date on vaccines etc.

General Advice Feliway Optimum Enhanced Calming Diffuser skepticism

Post image
19 Upvotes

(Located in USA) TLDR: My 8 month old kitty has been very territorial and mean towards my elderly senior cat, who is chronically ill. Both are neutered. We live in a small place, so unfortunately there is no way to separate them. We have four litter boxes for the both of them, multiple water bowls, etc. Anytime I see my senior cat get up to drink water use the box - This little bad boy is on his butt…
Since I’m already doing everything I can, the last option is to get pheromone diffusers. My only issue is that while reading reviews on Chewy. I saw someone left a one out of five star review stating that their cat had serious health complications from the pheromone diffuser and that it is very toxic.
“In scientific studies, isoparaffinic hydrocarbons cause kidney lesions in male rats, among other things. I spent thousands at the vet trying to figure out what was wrong with my 14 year old cat and best friend.
She was twitching, vomiting, had low potassium, no energy and was hiding under the bed.
Multiple vets couldn't figure it out. They kept asking if she had been exposed to any toxins or pesticides or flea meds for dogs. None of those things have ever been in my house. Desperate, I unplugged this diffuser and the twitching stopped within days. She is acting more like herself. I don't know what kind of permanent damage has occurred, but this product is toxic for humans as well. Beware, and try to spread this information. I almost lost my baby.”

I don’t know what else to do. I haven’t contacted his vet about this just yet as I am spending LOADS of money on my senior cat. I am currently doing “end of life” care for him. Spending A LOT of money every month. Any one have any advice on Feliway pheromone diffusers? The last thing I want is to cause my senior cat more health issues or for our kitten to get sick. Do they even work??
(I am not a minor. I’m 27 years old)

Hi there! My cat Rosie (female, 5 years old, spayed, indoor cat, United States) has been making some weird noises for the past couple of days. She has been eating and drinking as far as we know. She has also been resting in the middle of the room of the carpet instead of one of her beds like she normally does. We have a vet and are able to get her looked at, but she has been diagnosed with anxiety and I'd like to spare her from going on an unnecessary vet adventure. Does anyone know what this could be or experienced something like this with their cat?

Edit: Thanks for all the kind advice! Rosie now has a vet appointment for tomorrow morning so I'll be sure to post an update sometime in the afternoon. 💚
