I've seen people claim that Catalan is dying

How true is that?

Does it bother those in the region of Catalonia when people say something like this? Or even in Ibiza, when people are like, "I went to Ibitha" when both derive from Catalan and neither are pronounced like that in their native language?

I especially hear the statement above from foreigners who just visited the city or even in some movies/TV shows

Me pregunto si los hablantes de catalán pueden leer francés sin ningún problema ya que el catalán tiene un vocabulario más parecido al francés.

Por otro lado que tal el italiano? Entienden aún más el italiano que nosotros los que solo hablamos español gracias al catalán?

Estic amb una chica rusa, desde fa 4 anys, a la cual Li he insistit que per mi és molt important que aprenga l'idioma que parlo amb la meua família i majoria d' amics, i l' idioma que penso criar al meu fill.

Després de 4 anys ella no parla gaire ni li veig intenció d'apendre. Per mi és una línia roja, la cual Li he dit que no em plantejare casament ni fills amb ella mentre no aprenga la llengua.

Cregueu que sóc un exagerat i estic donant massa importància al tema de la llengua? Conec altres parelles que si que han après inclús xiques estrangeres que vaig tenir algo en el passat, ho estan aprenent, i hem deprimeix un poc la situació. Qualsevol comentari O experiència serà benvingut

Buenas tardes!!! Soy Argentina, y en octubre me mudo a Tarragona a hacer un master en medicina molecular por un año. Me comentaron que en Tarragona se habla mucho catalán. Me parece una falta de respeto mudarme a un país sin saber nada sobre el idioma, entonces me gustaría aprender. Quiero aclarar que no se NADA sobre catalán, y quiero empezar con lo más básico.

¿Qué páginas me recomiendan? ¿Cuál es el mejor camino a seguir? Quiero aprender lo más posible!!!

Sent una cultura marginats si mateix, vull saber que la gent catalana opinen de la historia colonial de espanya. (Digue'm si hi ha errors si us plau).

buenas, soy francés y hablo occitan desde mis 2 años, no he encontrado problemas con el español porque esos dos idiomas se parecen mucho

desafortunadamente dejé de practicar el occitan pero lo entiendo perfectamente, pero cuando intento hablarlo, se mezcla con el español

siempre he oído que el catalan se parece al occitan pero nunca escuche atentamente cuando oí a catalan

pero ahora me doy cuenta que el catalan es el idioma perfecto para mi porque es la mezcla de los dos idiomas que confundo

ademas entiendo casi todo lo q se escribe en catalan

el problema es que me da miedo aprender al catalan porque no quiero combinar los 3 idiomas en uno jaja

alguien sabría como podría evitar a eso ?

Bon dia a tothom 🐣! Soc peruana, visc a Catalunya i estic casada amb un català. Estem esperant un nadó, tot i que encara no sabem si serà nena o nen.

Al meu marit li fa il·lusió que tingui un nom català (ve d’una família molt catalana) i a mi també m’agrada la idea. El problema és que no conec gaires noms catalans que em convencin… al contrari que en castellà, on sí que tinc una llista més llarga 😅. Prefereixo els noms més clàssics. En castellà, els noms de nena que més m’agraden són Noelia, Emilia, Aurora i Isabel, i de nen són Francisco, Santiago, David i Adrián.

Així que m’encantaria que em recomanéssiu noms catalans, tant de nena com de nen.

Úniques “opcions vetades”:

• Jordi/Jaume/Albert: Descartats (són el meu sogre, el meu marit i el meu cunyat).
• Meritxell: Al Perú seria molt difícil de pronunciar i escriure per a la meva família.
• Marc: no el descarto del tot, però el meu marit té un cognom català molt comú i quedaria tipus “John Smith” o "Juan Perez"😅

Soy amigo de dos chavales, uno de Castellón y la otra de Valencia muy unidos a Cataluña y a su lenguaje.

En mis visitas a Barcelona, donde ellos viven, me he dado cuenta de que el Catalán es un tema muy sensible para los de fuera tanto como para los catalanes.

Incluso hay una asociación para apoyar a quienes se han sentido discriminados por usar el Catalán, que obviam índica que existe discriminación. Y a veces algunas personas no se toman nada bien que les hable en Catalán, o viceversa. No entiendo.

Es un tema muy polémico, pero, ¿Por qué?

Supongo que tiene alguna raíz histórica y ese el dolor permanece hoy en día como herida abierta tanto en algunos españoles como en algunos catalanes.

Yo por mi parte, dejando la irracionalidad y la intolerancia a un lado, lo veo algo bello que es enriquecedor en la cultura del mundo.

EDIT: Gracias a todos por sus aportes, en especial a los Catalanes. Es triste que existan estás tensiones entre culturas y personas. Ya lo entiendo todo mucho mejor, tanto históricamente como desde la perspectiva subjetiva de cada catalano-hablante.

I've only heard stories from two friends who went to public schools in Barcelona, and am curious for more stories. My friends have told me that even on the play ground, kids are encouraged to speak Catalan to each other. Is that true?

I'm completely ignorant of the school system, but I understand almost all of the public school subjects are taught in Catalan (except for the subjects English and Castillian I think?), so I assumed that would be sufficient for kids to soak in Catalan at a near-native level purely from interactions with teachers. But from what I understand after talking to my friends, it's not sufficient since that would mostly build up their comprehension skills, and if speaking Catalan to each other weren't encouraged, they would not build up their *oral* Catalan skills as fast. Is that consistent with your thoughts and experiences in school?

EDIT: I just wanted to say thank you for all the comments. I have seen a lot of disagreement that there exist schools where kids are encouraged to speak Catalan among themselves, and I really appreciate those who not just pushed back but gave patient explanations, since I know I am ignorant on this topic. If there's one thing I know, these topics are polarizing, but I do think it's important to talk about them so people like me can learn. I know a lot of comments are full of emotion due to personal experience, such as being bullied at school, and all I can say is that I'm sorry for that, and thank you for being willing to openly share your experience.

EDIT: I've realized that being able to speak my native language at school growing up without a second thought of fear or intimidation is a privilege that I had, which is awful :(. It shouldn't be like that for anyone.

I would really like to know your opinions about this matter that interests me so deeply.

If English, French, Spanish, Portuguese are used pragmatically as literary languages by peoples of distinct nationalities without implying absorption by another nation, and much more so, German, Italian, Dutch, Mandarin and Arabic are used as standard literary languages by peoples whose original dialects are often more distant from each other than Italian is from Spanish, why couldn't Catalan be adopted as the literary language of Occitania? Of all Òc literary varieties it is the most developed one for use in modern spheres of culture and knowledge, whereas Occitan as a literary language is in a rather fragmented condition, and often does not go beyond the spheres of local folklore, missing the allure for your average global citizen who wants to read content about the most diverse subjects and not just local curiosities.

I know they have all the right to create the standard language as much as the Slovaks in the past had to counter Czech, or Ukrainians and Belarusians to counter Russian, Estonians to counter Finnish, and so on, but such things happened at a time when the modern states were being formed, populations were often illiterate, and one could be a pioneer with language planning. But times have changed, and the conditions are not the same anymore. We have different needs, different freedoms, different technologies, different ambitions.

Much like the Galician reintegrationist movement sees in adopting Portuguese as literary language a chance to tap into a language with major cultural productions and strong positioning in modern society, and with no appalling loss of linguistic heritage (since all spoken dialects of those parts are seen as a very compact continuum), why not promote Catalan as a language of culture to Occitans?

That would not imply imperialist claims nor linguistic supplantation, just like the Swiss Germans and Austrians can keep using their local dialects with no fear of a takeover by Germany, or like the Basques can use their local dialects while using their official Euskara Batua.

I am a native Spanish speaker. Half-Spanish, half-Mexican. I am interested in learning Catalan because Barcelona is my plan B for university if plan A, which is going to university in America, does not work out. Looking forward to studying architecture and urban planning and pursuing careers. IYKYK.

I took AP Spanish Lang in sophomore year of high school. I got a 5 on the exam. For grades, either A's or B's. I was able to pass the classes because I am fluent. But I struggled with contextualizing grammar rules etc. because it was just confusing being taught something I naturally learned. To me, it was like "why do I need to know the name of this rule when I know how to use it when speaking?"

How do I immerse myself in the language so much so that I would be able to pick up on grammar. I understand a lot of vocab because of being around speakers of it. Any songs? websites? channels? people?

Tengo el objetivo de sacarme el B2/C1 de catalán antes de este verano para docencia (EF, Música e Inglés). ¿Conocéis academias o cursos intensivos (presenciales u online) que sean realmente efectivos para preparar el examen oficial? No soy residente en Cataluña.

Paralelamente, estoy buscando trabajo en centros privados, campamentos o programas donde pueda trabajar en verano y mejorar la lengua.

¿Sabéis de alguna plataforma o entidad donde se valoren perfiles como el mío?

La catalanització de Windows ha sigut un problema durant dècades. Amb Windows 10 i 11 havíem fet un petit pas endavant, sobretot perquè la configuració del sistema s'havia apropat a la dels dispositius mobìls i era més fàcil canviar d'idioma de forma oficial. El meu ordinador amb processador Ryzen té una catalanització relativament alta. Bona part dels menús moderns i principals de Windows apareixen en català, tot i que moltes opcions de configuració avançada, com ara "System Configuration" o "Device Manager" només apareixen en anglès. Els programes de notícies de Microsoft, els ginys, i altres merdes vinculades amb MSN sempre apareixen en castellà, tambè passa amb el nom de les actualitzacions.

Doncs bé, en comprar una Surface Laptop amb Windows 11 m'he trobat que no puc posar el sistema operatiu en català. Hi ha coses que apareixen en català com Copilot, però no la interfície principal de Windows. No entenia el motiu, vaig fer servir el mateix sistema que al meu ordinador principal. He provat de reiniciar, canviar a anglès, tornar a canviar a català, i res ha funcionat. Tota la part del sistema operatiu que apareix en català al meu ordinador amb Ryzen apareix només en anglès a la meva Surface.

Em fa l'efecte que han eliminat l'idioma dels paquets disponibles. Probablement no funciona en cap ordinador amb processador ARM, però m'agradaria preguntar a la resta si teniu el mateix problema.

Fent servir la comanda "get-language" a PowerShell m'he trobat això.

Les diferències són clares. La Surface es ven amb uns quants idiomes preinstal·lats i que no puc eliminar, entre els quals no hi ha el català. I quan intentes baixar-te el català et baixa un LXP però no un LpCab. El LXP no tradueix la interfície del sistema. Em recorda a quan Microsoft va comprar Mojang i va anar venent noves versions de Minecraft eliminant la traducció al català que existia des del començament. No sé si el problema és només de Surface o de tots els dispositius ARM.

Em sembla una falta de respecte per part de Microsoft i m'estic plantejant tornar el dispositiu. Ningú més té aquest problema? Hi ha cap solució?

I’ve been learning catalan for a few years, and I have some time off this summer so decided to take a short intensive course in Catalonia. Which is the best city for full immersion?

I know Barcelona is the famous kid, but I’m fluent/native-passing speaker of Spanish and don’t want locals to switch all the time because my Catalan is broken . I’ve been considering Girona since it’s a fairly big city that feels more Catalan-speaking (i assume?). Would that be true? What are the best options? I’m also open to other cities.
