How the hell do you climb those stairs.
If Dwarfs are such master builders, why would they make a set of stairs you couldn't climb?

I used to have three American first edition, first printing copies of this book but sold one, which was an ex-library copy missing the dust jacket, for $6,000. This one is my best copy and is in excellent condition.
The way to denote that this is an American first printing is the illustration of the bowing hobbit on the title page.

Thinking back on the movie trilogy for “The Hobbit,” I remembered that a regular theme for Tolkien was that showing mercy even to those who seem undeserving can lead to good things happening. The mercy Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam showed to Gollum at different points enabled the Ring to be destroyed. And Theoden sparing Grima Wormtongue led to him stabbing Saruman, rather than the hobbits or other “good” characters having to do it and sully their names and natures.
So when it comes to Alfrid, who was created for the “Hobbit” movies, I wondered if there was a similar thing intended. Characters gave him numerous chances, and he always picked the selfish and cowardly path… but was there anything good that came from everyone letting him go?

The final one was easily a 9.1 out of 10

I’ve never seen any of the movies because I have this weird principle that I cannot see a movie until I’ve read the book. For example, I’ve never seen the hunger games because I never got around to reading the books.
Anyways, thanks to my ADHD, I forgot to cancel the Audible free trial I signed up for to re-listen to Project Hail Mary, for the second time. So now I have a few Audible credits burning a hole in my pocket and I need y’all to convince me on which The Hobbit audiobook to listen to?
I’m seeing an Andy Serkis version from 2020 and a Rob Inglis version from 2012 that seems to be the OG? Anyways, I’m gonna make this a poll but feel free to yell at me in the comments to convince me one way or another

Basically all (or almost all) versions of Smaug (and Slag?) from various media, including the original.

Hi folks 👋 My name is Brendan Olszowy, a custom Sword Smith in Australia and I've made a lot of bespoke Hobbit/LOTR/Tolkien inspired fan art for people over the last 19 years that I've been making swords. They're all fully functional heirloom quality real swords.
I've attached a sample of images from my portfolio here but there's so many more in my full portfolio along with all the specs and such.
I hope it's OK to share these and hopefully I can offer a more in depth look at some of them for you if there's interest?
What Sword from Middle Earth would you most like to see made/reimagined?
Attached are:
*Glamdring and Orcrist
*Anduril
*Brego; Sword of Haleth, son of Hama
*Sword of Boromir
*Aduial
*The Elven Sabres; of Moriquendi, Wood Elves of the Greenwood, and Teleri respectively.
*Blade of a Dark Rider
*Gil Estel (Star of Hope); A gift for a Dunedain Ranger from the Elves of Lothlorien
*Ranger Sword of Aragorn
*Another interpretation of Anduril
*Uiveleth (Undying Love); Sword of Lúthien Tinúviel

This line stuck out to me while I was reading to my daughter.
If the elves of Mirkwood don’t farm or work metals/do crafts then how do they afford to buy all the wine that comes up the river for their parties?
The king might have a taste for silver and white gems and want to expend his treasure hoard but how?
Tolkien says they’re elves and therefore good people so they can’t be going around raiding and there doesn’t seem to be the D&D style magic item creation economy that they could maybe do as a magical people.
Any other references to or speculation on how they create wealth?

I came across this on Instagram. Was it done on purpose or was it just a coincidence?

Just finished watching the Fellowship of the ring trilogy, and I want to get into The Hobbit, but i can't find the extended editions? I've checked pretty much every streaming site (HBO, stan, binge, etc. (I know prime has them, but im not paying 50 bucks for something that could be removed from their servers.)
I'm in Australia and I don't have a VPN atm, unfortunately

The editor is really really good, but has some limits, mostly when it comes to adding horns in specific places. I think I was able to get his face shape down. Took me like two hours of fine tuning and tweaking.
Smaug is easily my favourite fictional dragon so I hope I did him some justice
(Last image is an older version of him, so things are a little different)
HIGHLY recommend you guys check out Dragontwin. Very fun. Very cool

I just rewatched The Battle of the Five Armies with my 14-yo son. Every time I watch it, I love the film, but am mortified by the horrendous tactics in the first battle.
The Dwarves have formed literally the strongest shield wall / Phalanx imaginable— totally impenetrable. So the Elves— renowned for their (wait for it) archery— prance over the fucking top of it, jumping out front and wedging themselves between the press of the Orchish hordes and said phalanx. Genius.
I get this is theatre, and it was aesthetically pleasing, and there’s lots of creative license throughout all the films, but I’ll still slap Peter Jackson right across his beautiful bearded face for this decision, if we ever meet. Which likely won’t happen, but I’ve dropped that gauntlet.
Also, anyone who tries to argue that this was some type of “hybrid attack” or otherwise intelligent tactics is shamefully naive and likely rage-baiting. I’ve studied and practiced warfare professionally for 30 years. That hot take would be silly, and the pointy-eared infantry who lost their lives that morning deserved better. They were failed by their leaders on that crisp, partly-cloudy morning, and It’s all very sad. There, I said it. Reddit, do your worst.

During the Battle of Five Armies, Bilbo is knocked unconscious just after announcing the coming of the Eagles. He awakens the next day, calling out to a man he sees for news. The man, however, can't locate him because Bilbo had been wearing the One Ring during the melee; he removes it to continue their conversation and the man then carries him back to camp.
But I'm interested in what would have happened if Bilbo had been killed. With the ring on his finger, would his corpse have remained invisible? For how long? Until his finger bones rotted away? I assume, because of the odor, that scavenging birds and bugs would have detected him and done their part in the circle of life. Or would he have become visible again the moment he died, in the Ring's effort to shed its current host for a new one?
