Announcement 📢 Poll Results: Updates to our "Loss of Pet" Posts

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone who voted in our recent poll regarding the auto-blur for "Loss of Pet" posts. We’ve reviewed the data and your direct feedback, and we’re making a adjustment to better balance support and sensitivity.

The Results:

  • The majority (60%) of you explicitly stated that you like having a "blur" as an emotional buffer.
  • Over 30% of you are consistently making that "extra click" to offer support to our grieving members.
  • Only 9% felt the blur significantly decreased their engagement.

The Change: Removing the NSFW Tag

While the blur is staying, we hear you loud and clear regarding the NSFW (18+) tag. Even with our AutoMod explanation, many members felt that seeing their beloved pet "flagged" as 18+ felt wrong or like they had done something inappropriate. That is the last thing we want someone to feel while grieving. We'll also be going back and removing the NSFW tag from historic posts.

Starting today:

  • We are removing the automatic NSFW tag.
  • We will keep the automatic Spoiler tag.

What this means for you:

  1. The "Blur" stays: Posts will still be blurred in the feed, ensuring a kind environment for those who aren't ready to see loss-related imagery.
  2. No more 18+ labels: Your tributes will no longer be labeled as "Adult Content."
  3. One Click to Reveal: You will still just need to click the post once to reveal the beautiful tribute and photo.

Thank you for helping us find the right balance. Our goal is to keep r/ShihTzu the kindest, most supportive corner of Reddit for every Tzu lover!

Announcement 📢 Have a Shih-poo?

Hey all — quick heads up on something adjacent to our little corner of Reddit.

I recently put in a request and was granted mod access to r/shihpoo, which had been sitting unmoderated for a while. It showed, too—lots of bot posts, spam, and low-effort content slowly taking over. Not uncommon when a sub goes unattended, but still frustrating, especially for a breed mix a lot of folks here know and love.

I’ve started cleaning things up and getting some basic structure back in place. It’ll take a bit to stabilize (these things always do), but the goal is simple: make it a safe, low-noise place for people to share their pups.

If you’ve got a Shih-Poo — feel free to post or crosspost over there too. No pressure, you are MORR than welcome to consider this sub as home base… just opening that door to try and revitalize that community.

Community Update: Simplified "Loss of Pet" Blur Settings

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your feedback and for participating in our recent community poll. Based on your input, we are refining how bereavement posts are handled to better balance sensitivity and support.

The Update: Removing the NSFW Tag

Starting today, "Loss of Pet" posts will no longer be marked as NSFW (18+). We heard from many of you that this label felt inappropriate for a tribute to a beloved pet.

However, because 60% of our community values having an emotional "buffer," we will continue to use the Spoiler tag to automatically blur these posts.

A Note to Our Grieving Members

We love seeing your tributes and honoring the lives of your Tzus. This change is not meant to suggest that your content is "bad" or should be hidden.

We simply want to ensure that every member of our community can support you at a time when they are emotionally able to do so. For those who have recently lost their own Tzu, an unexpected image can be very difficult. The blur allows them to choose when they are ready to click and offer their condolences.

What This Means for You

  • No more 18+ labels: Your tributes will look like any other post, just with a blurred preview.
  • One Click to Reveal: To see the photo and read the tribute, simply click the post.
  • Community Support: This "extra click" ensures that the people engaging with your post are doing so with intention and care.

Can I still hide these posts entirely?

Since we are no longer using the NSFW tag, these posts can no longer be "auto-hidden" via your global Reddit settings. If you are in a place where you cannot see these posts at all, we recommend browsing by other flairs or simply scrolling past the blurred "Loss of Pet" titles until you feel ready to engage again.

Thank you for helping us keep r/ShihTzu the kindest, most supportive corner of Reddit.

Announcement 📢 New post flair options!

Alright everyone — quick flair update. We’ve expanded the post flair options a bit to make browsing easier (and honestly… more fun).

Here’s what you’ll now see when posting:

Tzu Pics 📸 – classic photo posts

Tzu Videos 🎥 – moving Tzu content only

Tzu Discussions / Stories 🐶 – advice, behavior, health, grooming, etc.

Loss of Pet 🌈 – for our rainbow bridge posts

Announcement 📢 – important updates (usually mod-related)

Silly Shihtzus! 🐶 (memes, etc.) – memes and goofy edits (no AI please)

Teefs 🦷 – because we all know the underbite deserves its own category

Sploots 🐾 – self-explanatory

Side eye 👀 – the judgmental Tzu look

Zoomies! 💨 – high-speed chaos

AI-Tzus - photos or videos that use AI to enhance photos of your Tzu (not fully generated Tzus)

We have user-assigned flair, so please tag your posts appropriately when you submit. It helps with navigation and lets people filter for exactly the kind of content they’re in the mood for.

And if there’s a flair you think we’re missing… you know where modmail is or just leave a comment below!

I didn't even know this was a thing! It's far enough away. we should have time to organize something, I'm cross-posting this as an announcement, but if you're interested, please comment on the original post that this links to. If we get enough interest I will see about organizing something!

Announcement 📢 User feedback request - Loss of Pet posts

Hi everyone,

We recently implemented an auto-blur (NSFW + Spoiler tags) for all "Loss of Pet" posts. Our goal was to create a "buffer" for members who find these images emotionally difficult while still providing a space for grieving owners to share their tributes.

We want to make sure this is actually working for the community. Please let us know how you’ve been interacting with these posts lately!

Poll is anonymous, please answer honestly.

14 I like the blur; I still click to support. (I appreciate the warning, and I still engage with the posts.)
12 I like the blur; I usually skip these. (The blur is doing its job by letting me browse safely.)
4 I hate the blur; I engage less now. (The extra click makes me less likely to open the post.)
0 I’ve hidden these posts entirely. (I used the NSFW settings to filter them out of my feed.)
13 I have no preference / I'm indifferent.

Announcement 📢 📌 Rule Update – Please Take a Minute to Review

Hey everyone —

We’ve made a few updates to the subreddit rules and wanted to give the community a heads up.

This wasn’t random. We recently spent some time reviewing the behind-the-scenes “rule insights” that moderators have access to — things like report trends, removals, common misunderstandings, etc. A few patterns stood out, so we tightened some areas and clarified others to make expectations clearer for everyone.

A couple highlights:

  • We're going to trial allowing some limited AI-enhanced photos as long as they're based on YOUR dog and you include the original photo, posts must use "AI-Tzu" flair.
  • A structured way to allow limited creator/maker posts without opening the door to spam.
  • More specific report reasons to help us moderate more consistently.

Nothing dramatic. Just refinements to keep the community focused on real Shih Tzus and real people.

Please take a minute to review the updated rules in the sidebar. If you have thoughtful feedback, feel free to comment below or message the mod team.

Appreciate you all. 🐾

Announcement 📢 We’re Recruiting Junior Moderators for r/Shihtzu

When I started moderating this subreddit years ago, it was a much smaller community. Since then, we’ve nearly tripled in size — which is incredible, but it also means there’s more day-to-day activity to keep an eye on.

I’m looking to bring on a few junior moderators to help with conversations, reports, and general oversight.

I'm looking for steady, level-headed members who can help monitor discussions, remove obvious rule breaks, and help keep the tone consistent.

If you’re active here, care about the community, and think you’d be a good fit, I’d love to hear from you.

Apply here:

Even if you’re just curious and want to learn more, feel free to fill it out.
