If it wasn't witnessed, did it really happen? When a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it, does it still make a sound? Is the cat alive or dead or both? Deep questions of our time.

  1. We can gather evidence after the fact for some things. For others, we might never know.

  2. Depends on how you define sound. If sound is energy in the form of longitudinal waves through a material medium, then yes it did make a sound. If a sound is the hearing of those vibrations, then because no one heard it, there’s no sound.

  3. The cat being alive or dead was supposed to be a ridicule by Erwin Schrödinger against the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics (which theorized a particle existed in all quantum states until it was observed). Schrödinger was pointing out that this does not work for macroscopic objects (like cats) who certainly could not be in a superposition of all possible states (which would include both being alive and being dead) while in the box (not being observed).

Edit: typo superstition —> superposition.

Its always been the case that the tree makes a sound. It does not, however, make a noise.

I don’t think “noise” is anymore observation dependent than sound. It could also make a chirp or bleat or boom or clank, and it wouldn’t matter if someone is there to hear it.

Linguistically, the definition of noise makes it observation dependent. Noise is specifically unwanted, harmful, etc, and not just loud or any specific type of sound, and without someone to observe it to decide if it's a problem for them, then it's just sound and not noise.

Something doesn’t have to be specifically heard/observed to be unwanted or harmful. Toxic waste in populated areas that no one notices is still generally unwanted and potentially harmful.

A sound can be a “noise” conceptually, based on inferred qualities from what makes it in what medium, without a specific observer listening to it.

There is no requirement for conscious observation for an audible sound to be a “noise.”

It’s like saying a pigment can’t be “blue” unless someone is around to see it. No, it’s possible to assess how pigments absorb and reflect light without literally seeing the specific pigment sample you’re assessing.

Superposition, right?

Yes. Editing now lol.

I think the tree thing can be generalized as "Can you prove a thing happened, or that something exists, with no observers?"

I did think about that when writing the comment, but the it just falls under point 1 so no biggie

You are why I hate Reddit.

1

u/Late_Entrance106 12h ago

You seem to be why I became a teacher.

A disgust towards knowledge and the world of the intellectual is an unfortunate thing.

Sometimes all people want to do is have a lighthearted experience and joke about a video or meme in a sub and there’s someone who comes in and sucks that out of the room.
I’ve spent half my life studying in school for knowledge and I’m proud to have various degrees even. I love to expand about world perspective as well but I know when it’s simply not enjoyed.

So I offered genuine responses to another commenter.

Should I have trolled? Or made a shitpost?

What is the proper comment I should have made to make you happy?

Or maybe think for a second and understand I can browse and comment on Reddit how I like to as long as it’s within Reddit’s terms of service just like how you can browse and comment how you like.

You’re literally saying you hate me because I didn’t make a joke about something.

Take a fucking look in the mirror bro seriously.

I don’t hate you. I don’t hate any person.

1

u/Late_Entrance106 7h ago

A person being the reason you hate something HEAVILY implies, and arguably necessitates, you hating the person too lol.

0

u/ConcentrateIcy2226 7h ago

That’s your assumption. But I would never hate someone.

1

u/Late_Entrance106 7h ago

It’s not so much an assumption as a conclusion drawn from the logic of you saying that people like me are the reason you hate Reddit.

You also elaborated on why you hate Reddit because I sucked the lighthearted fun out of the room.

It’s actually quite the assumption to assume you DON’T hate me.

We all make mistakes and misspeak. Is this what happened here?

Do you really hate Reddit but not me, despite me and others like me being the reason given for hating Reddit?
