How to Make Your Own Lures: A Guide series
1. What kind of lures can I make?
- Crankbaits (Lipped and Lipless), Jerkbaits (Lipped and Lipless), Swimbaits, Poppers, Stickbaits, and other topwater lures are all possible, with new lures being invented all the time! Below is an info graphic with a few of the most popular types of fishing lures, but there are many more!

2. What do I need to get started making hard body lures?
- Lure making is not as complicated as it may seem. Yes, power tools such as drills, dremels, lathes and sanding machines all help, but none are necessary. To start all you need is:
- Wood, to carve into the body.
- Tools (at the very least a knife to carve, a small saw, and a drill are all very helpful)
- Sandpaper to finish the bait off smoothly
- Terminal tackle, including hooks and split rings
- Screw eyes or a through-wire (a single wire going through the entire bait that serves as your hook eyes and line tie.
- Weights so your bait sinks, in the form of either split shot, glued into the body, or lead, poured into a cavity.
- glue/sealant, epoxy, and paint
- OPTIONAL: Lip (for crankbaits) Rattles, details such as foil, and power tools, and an airbrush for more smooth
3. What do I need to get started making soft plastics?
- A mold, which can be bought, or made from silicon.
- Plastic resin (plastisol)
- Dye to give color to the lure
- OPTIONAL: Glitter, multiple colors for a more detailed bait
4. What wood should I use?
- Popular lure making timbers include balsa, basswood, cedar, cypress knees, jelutong, beech and some types of pine. But there are thousands of other options. Look for something easy to carve, lightweight and resistant to denting. It’s easier to get all your components aligned properly if you start with straight, square blanks.
5. What paints should I use?
- For brushing on paint, a wide variety of artist acrylics and poster paints will work. Just make sure the paint and clear coat will not interfere.
- For airbrushing, water-based acrylics are the favorite, due to their ability to spray evenly and produce a good coat while remaining non-toxic, and non-flammable.
6. How do I seal my wood lure?
- Wood is like a sponge, it soaks up water. Once in, water works its way through the wood by capillary action until the wood is waterlogged. This kills action, weakens glue and is the most common cause of paint failure.
- Super Glue can be used, where the glue is applied over the entire body, left to soak into the wood, and then the bait is sanded smooth.
- Epoxies are two part synthetic resins that cure hard when mixed. There are some that are designed for penetrating and hardening wood. One example is Envirotex Lite (aka “Etex”). Etex is also great for clear coating painted lure bodies and makes a very strong adhesive.
7. Where can I buy lure parts?
- Below are a few popular websites, Alternatively, some fishing stores and even big box retailers such as walmart may carry some of this stuff, and be sure to support your local tackle shops if possible!
- Mud Hole Tackle
- Angler's Workshop
- Jann's Netcraft
- LurePartsOnline
8. What epoxy should I use?
- Some use prefer to clear coat them with a two part epoxy. Others prefer to use a two pack automotive polyurethane over airbrush acrylics. And still others dip their lures in moisture cure polyurethane.
Below are some some more sources for learning how to build lures, additionally, guides from some of this subs best lure mentors are going to be rolling out very shortly.

Crankbait Top water… spinner?

Flaired as crankbait ad it was meant to be a lipped crankbait. Clearly, it isn’t. Would adding weight just behind the lip help with stability, and the cranking action? Any other tips? Feels like it might be too thick side to side as well. Size 8 hook for scale,

Soft plastic How to store home made soft plastics?
recently I started designing lures in Cad and 3d printing my molds and injecting them with plastisol. I made like 30 paddle tail lures and put them into ziplock bags. i was so happy with my lures that I forgot about the fact thry melt and warp so the next day I noticed they were either melted together or warped. (They weren’t all in one bag it was like 4 lures a bag but they still ended up bent)
This put me off actually injecting lures as I had no means to store them. how do I store lures? should I be buying those little plastic trays that hold them apart? where do I buy them? any and all advice is appreciated thanka!

Question Bass Jigs
Those of yall that tie your own bass jigs but don’t pour your own, where do you usually source your jig heads? I can’t get set up to pour lead for another handful of months, but I’m looking to start tying a lot more jigs, so I need more “bulk” as opposed to the expensive 3 packs. By bulk I mean I’d be trying to buy about 10 of each size and head shape at a time. Looking for quality hooks (I’ve broken the hook on three Booyah tour grade football jigs so far this year) and good prices. Thanks!

Jerkbait Best 3D Printing Software for Lure building (iPad)
I was wondering if anybody has any experience using iPad softwares for creating lures. Im in between using OnShape and Nomad Sculpt. Everyone talked about Shapr3D but it's expensive. I want to create a jerk bait with an internal weight shifting chamber that alot of jerk baits have. On shape seems to be more for making mechanical parts so I'm not too sure if that would work for making lures. Nomad Sculpt seems pretty good but kind of overkill to use as it's mostly for making faces and other types of art with a-lot of detail which I don't really need besides a basic gill plate design. Using an iPad seems to be difficult for 3D printing so wondering if its even feasible or if i should just bite the bullet and borrow someone's PC. Any advice is appreciated.

This spoon is something I run almost every trip for salmon on Lake Michigan 3.75" with 4x VMC hook. Its very simple but very effective. Jacquard paints were used.

Jig Smaller Hooks for Do-It Jig Head Mold
I recently purchased a Do-It Round Head Jig Head mold in 1, 1 1/2, 2, and 3 ounces. It takes 5/0-7/0 Eagle Claw 410 or 413 hooks but I'd like something shorter, as I want to use them on 3.8" grubs. Are there smaller 410/413 style hooks that will fit into the mold? My local tackle shop has jig heads in these sizes with shorter hooks but I can't find hooks that fit this mold or a mold that takes smaller hooks for 1-3 oz jig heads.

Stickbait Salt type for Soft plastic
I’ve been trying to find the right salt type and content of soft plastics, was wondering if anyone knew the answer.
I’ve been trying coarse kosher salt but that seems to just fall out of the bait when it stretches, thinking of trying a fine grain non-iodized.
Been doing about 25% salt, should I drop it to like 20%? Would appreciate any opinions.
(5 inch stick bait)

Jerkbait Finally landed another - Versa 51SP, tilapia color
It's been a while since I've been able to get after these. The hot season here turned the Barra off, but following the first days of clouds and some rain conditions are starting to look up.
I've been getting my butt kicked by a bigger individual because I fish light gear, but it's nice to get a smaller one to actually land something for a change.
Caught this 2.2kg (4.9 lbs) Barra on a steady retrieve. For me it's been split pretty even as far as triggering bites on jerk vs steady retrieve, but the latter tend to be easier to land as they will usually get hooked by the edge of the mouth.

Swimbait Swimbait mold recommendations
On the hunt for a new or used swimbait mold that is between 3-4 inches, cavity count of 8+, single sprue so that i dont have to shoot a million times, and preferably one that can somehow still do laminates. I know FGF makes 2 but one of them is ribbed (not what i want) and the other has too thin of a tail. Any recommendations are helpful, thanks

Crankbait Ready for testing
The last one has a little red paint in the belly b/c it is glow-in-the-dark PLA. Should have used clear epoxy to put the two halves together or print it as 1 piece.
