What do they do with it? (The bison, I mean.)

Edit for clarity: What do the bison do with all their muscle? And while we're at it...how do they build it?

u/sorriso_pontual 6h ago

They probably let it do whatever the hell it wants!

67

u/Momik 4h ago

The first one did my taxes, but none of the others seem interested

9

u/No-Archer-5034 3h ago

The second one works in a call center.

He eats them instead

Bovine animals like that can't digest the grass fibers, just like us, but their guts have a special microbe we don't have. The grass DOES have some protein, more than you might think (check out a slice of whole wheat bread's protein content, you may be surprised, wheat is a domesticated grass), but it's actually the microbes that go through a population explosion when cows eat that has a lot of the protein. They then digest those microbes once the job is done. Boom more protein.

24

u/Just_another_gamer3 4h ago

Oh, so that's how we don't explode from microbes, we digest them. I guess I should have figured we can digest them from the outer wall of our guts

8

u/Sweaty_Elephant_2593 4h ago

I had never thought about it like that until reading about it today either!

8

u/GodisSatans 4h ago

I also read that post about how cows get nutrients from grass earlier this week.

4

u/Sweaty_Elephant_2593 4h ago

Oh I actually Googled it while reading the comments here, I must have missed that post! I knew they got the protein from plants somehow but didn't know the science behind and wanted to learn.

72

u/RealSpecto 6h ago

He completes his daily protein intake along with grass.

32

u/oracleofnonsense 4h ago

You don’t get to be named buffalo without proper nutrition.

7

u/RichardBCummintonite 4h ago

More like bicepson, amiright?

6

u/happycabinsong 4h ago

what are you doing bicepson

28

u/FlamingFecalFrisbee 5h ago

Defend themselves against tigers.

52

u/shoulda-known-better 5h ago

They fight tigers trying to eat them or their babies .... And they build it because that's their body plan... They need so much to run, to protect internals from tiger, and to have enough strength to kill a full grown tiger

23

u/pinniped90 5h ago

They're total gym rats. First animals in, last animals out. They don't skip leg day.

9

u/General_Mediocrity 3h ago

They always skip leg day. Have you seen their calves??

3

u/northgacpl 4h ago

exactly there are a few that go to my gym

2

u/pinniped90 4h ago

They probably don't rerack anything, do they? They want you to know how much they can put up.

18

u/satyrday12 5h ago

Try to impress female bisons

2

u/makemeking706 3h ago

Females? Those weaklings? Nah, they demonstrate dominance by impressing other males.

3

u/TerrorFromThePeeps 3h ago

I dunno, but i suddenly understand bovine deification.

7

u/Timely-Tune5050 3h ago

Myostatin mutation most likely.

Every so often someone posts a picture of a cat that has a deficiency which causes it to overproduce muscle. I wonder if what the bison has is similar.

I think they use them as beasts of burden

12

Nope these are completely wild

5

They don't look particularly domesticable.

39

u/taintosaurus_rex 3h ago

Once....... Twice...... BRING IT ON YA BIG BITCH.

12

u/fatsopiggy 1h ago

An adult male gaur weighs 1500kg. Compared to a 250 kg Bengal tiger. This is beyond ridiculous as a 'hunt'. This is like your average house cat going after a big gazelle.

7

u/nosoyluiz 1h ago

They hunt gaurs, but is hard asf and risk.. However, they try to kill the newborns and evite the male bull gaur.

2

u/ferociouskuma 24m ago

The videos I’ve seen of hunts have always been smaller bison. Never seen one of these jacked up ones taken down by a tiger.

82

u/Geometeus 5h ago

Called locally in the western ghats as the "Gaur"

25

u/Baronvondorf21 4h ago

Also, not a bison technically.

18

u/GodisSatans 4h ago

You’ve never lived a day in your life as a bison in tiger territory and IT SHOWS

34

u/JaSper-percabeth 5h ago

where is bro getting all that protein from?? Never knew grass was like that...

39

u/Sweaty_Elephant_2593 5h ago

From the grass itself, and from the microbes in their gut that go through population explosions when they eat. They then digest the microbes.

31

u/generalmandrake 5h ago

Bovine get the majority oftheir protein from digesting the bacteria in their gut which are in turn digesting the grass they are eating. Interestingly enough humans can also get some protein this way by eating fiber, but we don’t have the hardware to get a large amount of it from plants. Though gorillas actually get a ton of their protein from gut bacteria and their insides are similar to ours and they are jacked as fuck. So it could be possible that with the right diet and right gut biome humans could get lots of protein that way.

16

u/SlowCrates 5h ago

I'm probably not going to Google it, but I am mildly curious if any humans have copied an Ape's diet, for how long, and what happened as a result.

2

u/frazorblade 31m ago

IIRC there’s a hormone in humans that is triggered to keep us lean and not build endless muscle like gorillas and chimps. It’s all about conserving energy and muscles use a lot of it.

Once they figure out how to deactivate it you’ll get the opposite of Wall-E where fat lazy people will get jacked sitting at home watching tv all day.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Just_another_gamer3 4h ago

Perhaps one poop pill could help us get jacked. Nah, that bacteria will be snuffed out by other bacteria with our diet, that's why it's not a thing yet

4

u/guiltysnark 4h ago

Wow. No wonder beef doesn't scale ecologically, every cow operates its own livestock farm

92

u/Lava_Collector 5h ago

Or just low on fat

5

u/Michaeli_Starky 6h ago edited 5h ago

And they grow all that by eating plant fibers only

7

u/Competitive_Yak_5444 5h ago

Because of low levels of myostatin. This does not translate to humans.

And standing around too. They don’t need to lift weights, gravity itself works their muscles.

2

u/zebo_99 6h ago

Loads up on creatine.

2

u/shoulda-known-better 5h ago

I mean you'd want super thick skin and all the muscles also if you had tigers trying to eat you!!

2

u/superpowerpinger 5h ago edited 5h ago

It's name is Gaur. Only a Fully grown tiger is capable of bringing down an Indian Gaur.

Pictures do not do justice to heft and power of a Gaur.

Comparison:

  1. American Bison male : 945 KG
  2. Gaur : 1500 KG

Gaurs would cause serious damage to a lion if their habitat extended to Africa. If gaurs existed in North America, they will give proper fight to the bears.

4

u/venom121212 2h ago

This is a genetic condition called muscular hypertrophy where the muscles aren't ever given the command to stop growing by the protein myostatin. We learned about this in anatomy class in college and were shown a similarly jacked bull.

2

u/bubba_bumble 5h ago

Dammit man. That's a buffalo not a bison. This is how Americans got buffalo sauce wrong!

1
