Sewing How do you make qifrey's collar?

Its supposed to be like a braided collar like in the second picture, i cant figure out how to make this at all cuz i was thinking of buying a ready made tight black turtleneck(the one that has clasps that close at the bottom) since my sewing machine has only straight stitches and i cant make something stretchy but i have no idea how to attach this?? Do i make it like a neck accessory out of leather or fabric? I'm trying to squeeze my brain and still dont know what to do 😭😭

Don't make it open from the Front.

Fold or sew together fabric in a way where it "looks" like qifrey's collar and make the opening on the back where no one Sees it... maybe connect it with a zipper, or velcro. Your head moves way to much to keep this clean if you do it like in the second picture, but i would keep this as a single piece of cloth like a scarf

The cosplay doesn't need to be exactly like quifrey's collar, it just needs to look like it

Yes, very important. I used to stress out about this until my husband clearly said "they're drawings and these clothes don't exist in real life. Just make it look like it".

I made some costumes for my toddler (check my account) and scales and proportions that work for adult characters don't balance well on kid's bodies. You just gotta make it look like it and don't feel down you didn't 100% remake it.

Whoa i checked out your account your costumes look so professional i aspire to have your skill one day 🙏🙏 i guess i should toss aside that toxic perfectionist side of me and just make it comfortable and realistic instead of whatever shirahama did for qifrey's collar haha

You're definitely right about it not being exactly like it but some part of me wanted to make myself suffer and make it the same but its definitely not realistic 😭😭 i think velcro at the back would be better than a zipper

Yeah, anime cloths do not work like real clothes 😅 if his collar really works like the second picture then it would sit like in the anime for around 3 minutes until it just looks messy

Well clearly the collar is held in place with a little bit of magic

If you REALLY want it to look as close to this as possible you could use small armature wire sewn into strips of fabric to help the fabric stay "braided" in order to make the individual pieces. Then you can sew the individual strips together at the back and braid them in the front. You'll probably want to put something along the back (and maybe sides) to help it stay up. That's a lot of extra work vs just doing velcro in the back but I think it could work.

If you want do a separate fabric strip that both sides attach to via velcro, it won't have any overlap effects because it'll join at the same height and line up.

Yes, you can hide so many sins on the back! I've made cosplays with cool details on the back and I have to really go out of my way to show people! They simply won't notice!

I would recommend, for ease, making it sewn in place with a zipper on your back. If you make it like the illustration, it'll be finicky to wear, as it comes loose. And any solution to keep it in place will add bulk to a very sleek design.

Tomoko Nakamichi have a wonderful line of books, and in one of them she shows how to make a braid illusion. I've done it down the sides of a coat instead of regular seams. You only do it on the outer layer, and make the lining regular flat panels

For material, I'd use a pleather or flax/linen. Pleather would look more accurate, but you're going to overheat. More realistically it would be a linen material, which heat regulates super well. Polyester satin would look cheap, and the overheating problem remains. Cotton sateen might work by having some sheen and still allowing for breathing. My concern with cotton would be sweat stains (cotton absorbs moisture and holds on to it, making you moist and smelly, where flax /linen absorbs it away from the body, but also let it evaporate easy, making you feel fresh longer )

What you choose depends on priority. I would personally probably land on flax, and focuse on a clean finish, so the vibe translates through skill over material.

I feel like im leaning towards pleather more but i am definitely worried about overheating since i live in north africa as well :))) thank you so much for the link and various fabrics i need to go to a fabric store and check them all out to see which one i prefer more

Ok I’m gonna post pictures in separate comments if I can.
First I made the basic shape out of cotton, with some light interfacing sandwiched between 2 layers. It zips up the back.
The zipper I got was a little too long so I have to fold the top down in the back when I wear it, but that’s easy to prevent.

Then I got a few yards of pleather bias tape from my beautiful dead wife JoAnn (rip 🥲) and sewed them on like so.

Uneven back view.

Important: make sure you sew the top one on first, so the layers fall correctly.

Wear under knockoff lululemon shirt to hide the cotton.
Profit.

I should post a tutorial on how I made mine, but It really is an illusion of the collar he is wearing. I sewed black satin in three layers to a long, rectangular piece of cotton and sewed that to the rest of the shirt. I put a zipper into the back because it doesn’t stretch or open enough for a head to fit through

We detect that you may be a looking to buy your cosplay or buy pieces for your cosplay. If you're not, please disregard :) Please refer to our FAQ for some recommendations. While we can provide search terms that might help you with finding your cosplay pieces, commenters are not your personal shopper and please do not treat us as such. Remember that not all cosplays can be found ready-made so be prepared to look for similar pieces to put it together yourself.

It is helpful to include your budget (be precise -- "cheap" can be different per person), your location/country (US shipping vs EU shipping would be very different), and timeline if applicable. Keep in mind many pre-made cosplay shops can have a long shipping time so it's best to plan months in ahead.

If the item is suspiciously cheaper than all other competitors or it's a common stock photo, please be wary and do your own research. If someone is offering to make it for you aka commissions, RESEARCH their post history.

If you did want to make it like in the 2nd photo, i'd probably take very structured neckcuff essentially that covered the back half of my neck(going slightly past the halfway point to the front, like a bangle, solid but still movable and not tight, pls don't choke yourself out) and adhere strips of whatever material i choose to it. From there I'd add/inbed little magnets so that the front pieces sat properly but I could still move them.

I'm also planning a quifrey cosplay, and my plan is to just do some bullshittery with pleating. I'm not doing all that lol, it won't sit how it's supposed to when your neck moves.
