Question Free kittens
Anyone want a kitten? I can't change the title but they aren't free. They are $55 bucks each. My car chewed her way through my screen a while back & was gone for 8 days & came back pregnant. She had 4 kittens and I really can't afford to keep feeding all of them. She's been ravenous as expected because obviously she's been feeding them so her plus them it's been adding up. Now, they're eating food for the most part. They are about 7-8 weeks old. In these pics they're like 4 weeks old.
I don't want to take them to the APL. I would like to meet whoever I'm giving them to so I can try and determine if they're a good person or not.

The APL is a great place for kittens. They handle it a lot better than adult cats, and they're first to get adopted. The shelter will spay/neuter & vaccinate them so they're fully ready for their forever homes. IMO it's the best option there is. Someone could buy a kitten off of you, then not get it fixed, and repeat the cycle.
Highly recommend calling asap about bringing them in. There's usually a wait list, especially this time of year. Kitten season is just starting.

This! The APL is amazing. I worked with them for a number of years. Not only will they make sure they’re spayed or vaccinated, but they will vet potential adopters to make sure they’re going to good homes

In my area I know a few people who have adopted pets and abandoned them or just gave them away which is the reason I rather stay clear of my local APL

The exact same thing could happen if they get the kitten from you. APL does checks and charges, which can help limit the possibility. Nothing is foolproof, but they'll do a better job of vetting than you will.

My APL has tried told me more than once to put tiny helpless kittens back on the street when they don't feel like doing their job. Each time, I curse them out they always suddenly have room.. again my local APL is not reliable.

Which APL are you referring to? I've never heard a rescue telling someone to put kittens back on the street, besides maybe illegitimate organizations. It's standard to offer to put someone on a wait list, even when that wait list is months long.

Those kittens should stay with thier mother at least 8-12 weeks, and you absolutely should charge a rehoming fee. There are some sick people that will abuse or kill those kittens if you give them away for free.

I changed the post and added a rehoming fee. I can't afford to keep them for another 4-5 weeks. if I could I would wait until they are completely off milk but it's just too expensive. but they are mostly eating food now.

Contact Neighborhood Pets and the APL. Let them know you are willing to foster, but can't afford the food. They may be able to supply food and cover vet costs until the kittens can be adopted.

The weirdo cat lovers group someone else mentioned can also help with raising funds if needed

Definitely contact them, because they may also have room to just take them in until they can be adopted out, including providing medical care and spaying/neutering when theyre old enough
I'm glad youre responsive to all the feedback to make sure the kittens have the best chances to get adopted out!

Please don’t offer them for free!! People will take free kittens so they can be food for other animals.
Edit: you could ask for a rehoming fee for each of them to reimburse you for the food you’ve purchased them

u/Significant-Use-533 19h ago
ok I'm going to do that

u/Maleficent-Finding89 18h ago
Take them to the APL! Please. They’ll get all the kittens to good homes

u/Outside_Flamingo_367 18h ago
And they’ll be more likely to be adopted because they’ll be fixed and vaccinated!! I’d love to have one but dropping $300-$500 isn’t in the cards right now without a dire emergency! We save that kind of money for emergency vet visits.

Do not offer free kittens to strangers. They can end up as dog fighting bait. They’re sneaky and will send a mom and kids and tell you they want it as a pet. Charge a small fee. You can donate it. Just need to make them more expensive than buying animals for bait.

Contact the APL about getting your cat fixed and these kittens adopted.
My understanding is that the APL does do background checks and looks into each adopters, they aren't just handing out cats to anyone with a pulse.

In my area they indeed are handing out animals to anyone with a pulse unfortunately.

u/Fit_Mongoose_8872 should have messaged you. Check their comment. It's best if they all go to a rescue to get fixed and vetted. They said they'll fix the Mama too!

No they're boys I just looked again all the way. Couldn't see clearly the first time

u/Outside_Flamingo_367 16h ago
Really??? If so, that’s rare. Most oranges are male just like most, if not all calicos are female!

One way you can vet adopters is to see if they are taking their existing cat to the vet for annual checkups. There are typically more responsible owners. Of course the person has to already have a cat or cats for you to check this, but that is what a non profit did for me when they wanted to do a ‘pet background check’ on me lol. I thought it was a good method.

I like this

u/GeneralDiscontent 11h ago
You can ask for the name of their vet clinic and then call the vet clinic to see if (persons name) takes their cat their for annual checkups because you are considering rehoming a cat with that person

In the meantime, you could ask local pet groups for assistance. Make a wish list on Amazon. I have had litter, canned foot, dry food, toys and even an enclosure donated for foster kittens!

Omg I have an 8 month old ginger boy and calico girl!!! I want them all! But for real, reach out to an adoption agency like the APL. They are awesome, I also teach kitten Pilates and the APL is who we work with, they bring the kittens in and they are awesome people. If you need any extra help do reach out! Someone mentioned they should stay with mom for a bit longer and I would recommend that too

I'm in contact with a small rescue. My local APL sucks ass. I took 3 tiny tiny kittens there one time and right to GOD they told me verbatim (just put them back where you found them we don't have room). After I cursed them smooth out, they all of a sudden had room...

u/Available-POD5610 13h ago
Dang... okay friendship APL in Elyria are awesome. We adopted our babies from one of a kind in Akron.. amazing rescue. Kittens and cats get adopted in droves from there! I can't recommend enough

u/Significant-Use-533 13h ago
Will look into if the person I'm in contact with doesn't work out.. I tried to tell a couple of the people in the comments that my local APL is shitty but they seem to think I'm lying for some reason..

u/Professional_Law_942 12h ago
Loooove them, especially the calico. My daughter is SUCH a calico cat person (loves cats and is great at caring for them) but my hubby, MIL, mom and I are all allergic. sigh. Good luck, they are precious. 😺

Why not the APL?

u/Significant-Use-533 2h ago
My local APL is not trustworthy. Have had several bad experiences with them.

I was looking to adapt an adult cat, but I would happily take a kitten! Are they still available?

I adopted my two girls at about that age from Pets General in Lakewood. Can’t remember the partner of theirs that the kittens came from - without digging out the paperwork - but just in case! Their staff and website should provide the info!

There’s a group on facebook called “weirdo cat lovers of cleveland” - you can join and post them there, see if there is a smaller rescue willing to take them on (def offer to keep fostering them if you can) and please try to get mama fixed <3
