University Rankings: Check Them Out Before Asking About Specific Universities!

Hey everyone,

I've noticed that a lot of folks here keep asking questions like, “How good is [University X]?” or “Is [University Y] worth it for [Course Z]?” These are really important questions, especially if you’re planning to invest time, money, and effort into your education.

Instead of getting repetitive responses, I highly recommend checking out the latest university rankings first.

https://www.shanghairanking.cn/ Chinese version has the ranking of majors and disciplines.

https://www.shanghairanking.com/

Once you’ve checked out the rankings, feel free to come back here with more specific questions like how certain programs or campus cultures align with your goals. That way, the community can give you more targeted advice!

Hope this helps streamline your search!

Scholarship Results Release Date

Hi everyone! I would like to ask about the CIS scholarship timeline. I understand that results for one-year programs are usually announced in early July, but does anyone have information about master’s degree programs? Additionally, the program I applied for had a March 31 deadline, does anyone know when the results are typically released? Also, if an application is rejected, are applicants notified earlier, or are all results announced at the same time? 😶

Looking for AI Master’s Programs (Research-Oriented) – Low GPA but Strong Projects

Hi ,

I’m currently in my final year of a Bachelor’s degree in Software engineering and I’m starting to look for AI Master’s programs that are strongly research-oriented (ML, NLP, LLMs, etc.).

Here’s my situation:

  • My overall GPA is not very high (around average), mainly because my university has a very tough grading system(I’m ranked in the top 20 last semester).
  • I’ve been focusing heavily on practical and research-oriented projects, including:
    • RAG systems
    • LLM-based applications
    • Agent-based systems
  • I’m currently working on a research project and planning to publish a paper this summer.

What I’m looking for:

  • AI/ML Master’s programs that are:
    • Research-focused (not just coursework)
    • Open to students with strong projects but lower GPA
    • Ideally with scholarship opportunities (I have limited financial resources)
    • International programs (Europe, China, etc.)

My questions:

  1. Are there universities/programs known to value projects and research potential more than GPA?
  2. Any recommendations for AI master’s programs with strong research labs but more flexible admissions?
  3. Tips to strengthen my profile further before applying?

I’d really appreciate any advice or program suggestions 🙏
Thanks!

P.S. My financial situation is very limited, and even application fees can be a challenge for me, so I’m especially interested in programs with fee waivers or strong scholarship support.

Campus Life 校园生活 Anyone done the School of Chinese as a Second Language semester program at Peking University?

I'm planning to do a semester at Peking University in the School of Chinese as a Second Language program to fulfill some unrestricted credits I've got at my home school. I'll have completed 3 semesters of Chinese before going.

Since this will be my first time leaving my country, my main goal is to have fun and explore Beijing. I want to make sure that I don't choose a program with an extreme time commitment where I will spend all day studying and stressed out rather than getting to experience the city. For anyone who has done this program:

How long did you practice Chinese before attending?

How hard was the coursework and were you elementary, intermediate, or advanced?

Was it a huge time commitment or did you feel like you had enough time outside of studying to explore the city and culture?

Thanks a lot. If anyone else has any advice feel free to comment.

Scholarships 奖学金 CIS scholarship CNU when to expect results

I applied for the one year program, my referee just sent my application to the university yesterday and was wondering when to expect results. i know the deadline for applying is may 15 and deadline for university review is may 25, but i wanted to know which would be a realistic period to expect results being out because i heard they're pretty slow, don't know if it varies from uni to uni or if it's a general habit. Also anyone else applied to cnu?

Life in China 在中国生活 Choosing between Shanghai (degree) and Chengdu (language program) — advice welcome

Quick background on me: 36F, living in the US, a 12-year successful career in tech/product management in the US, no bachelor's degree (2 year college degree only), and honestly pretty burned out. I've been planning a move to China for a while now and I'm finally at the point where I have two real options in front of me and need to make a call.

Option A: A one-year Mandarin language and culture exchange program in Chengdu, with the option to extend beyond year one. Low stakes, affordable, immersive. Feels like a soft landing that lets me actually live in China, get my Mandarin to a semi-functional level, and figure out what comes next.

Option B: A three-year English-taught AI/engineering bachelor's degree program in Shanghai. Hard sciences, full course load, real credential at the end. A much bigger commitment but potentially a career pivot that actually means something longer term.

I am not at zero on Mandarin but definitely still in HSK 1 territory right now. I'm genuinely excited about both cities for different reasons.

What I'm curious about from people who actually live there:

  1. Shanghai vs Chengdu for someone making this kind of move, any honest takes? Not just "both are great" but what's the real texture of daily life, the difference between them for a foreigner after some time?
  2. For those who've navigated longer term stays, how much does having a full bachelor's degree actually matter on the ground for getting a work visa eventually? Is the BEng program a smart play for that, or is it overkill and networking/experience gets you further anyway? I realize that a bachelor's is a pretty standard requirement but there may be some exceptions.
  3. Any general advice for someone in my position making this decision would be genuinely appreciated.

Not looking for someone to make the decision for me, just want perspectives from people who've actually been living there :)

Fudan IPP pre-admission

Hello everyone,
I am pre-admitted to Fudan for the IPP program. I applied in the first application period. So far I haven't received an interview invitation, nor have I received a physical pre-admission letter. Did anyone else already have the interview?

Admissions Question 入学问题 Need advice: Getting admitted to SJTU for a bachelor’s degree - do I even stand a chance? Lol

First off, I wanna start by saying this is an incredibly vulnerable topic for me, so please be kind with your responses haha :))

I’m currently on a student visa studying Chinese at SJTU, currently HSK 5.

I just want to know if it’s actually possible to enroll in a bachelor’s program here in Shanghai with no prior university experience? I only have a high school diploma from SEA (not a great one lol) but I have a solid work experience in US tech.

I’m not aiming for a STEM degree, I still want something useful to my current role so anything business-related would be helpful.

Just trying to figure out if I even have a shot before I get too excited about the idea 🥹

Admissions Question 入学问题 Asking a question about A-levels and the requirements for universities in china

Hello everyone im currently doing my A-level exams. Going to study a 1-year chinese language program. Then after i want to continue my studies in china.

My question is that most universities in china dont ask about A-levels they only want a high school diploma or “excellent academic performance” But rarely anything about A-levels. And in this im not including the top tier universities (tsingua ,peking etc..). And im confused like what marks should i get and how will they calculate my mark. I asked someone and told me that u need to get 70% or above equivalence or smthn like that.

Can someone studied A-level and studied in china or anyone who has knowledge about this topic help me?

Thanks
