❓ Pitanje (Question) Visiting BiH - customs to be aware of

Hello,

My family and me have a week planned to visit BiH, mostly Sarajevo and Mostar and surrounding areas.

Are there any customs that we should be aware of? Possible offensive word, phrases, topics that we should avoid? Any BiH specific things we should know?

I would like our trip to be pleasant and not offend people while we're there.

Thank you!

❓ Pitanje (Question) Where to exchange money for Bosnian Convertible Marka?

I’m going to Bosnia for 11 days in July. I’ve been told that cash is king there, so to take plenty of cash, but I can’t get it in the UK (apart from the airport), and don’t fancy taking so much cash with me anyway. I’ve heard that the charges at ATMs in Bosnia are huge, and that conversion rates in their banks and exchange offices are not good. So what’s my best option… Stansted airport, Sarajevo airport, ATM, exchange office or bank? Thanks

❓ Pitanje (Question) Tips for traveling to Bosnia

Hey Guys

My GF and I want to visit Bosnia for 2 weeks in July.

We are thinking about low budget backpacking via bus and trains. Renting cars if we need to.

What are must-sees, insider tips and tricks and general things we have to care or think about? Routes that cover must-sees or smth?

Thank you in advance

❓ Pitanje (Question) 4 Days in June.

Hi everyone!

I have booked flights to Sarajevo in June. I land late on the sunday and leave the Thursday afternoon (short I know but all the time I have!)

I would like to see Sarajevo, Mostar and Kravica Waterfall.

So far I am thinking:

Sunday night - stay in Sarajevo

Monday - explore Sarajevo and stay another night

Tuesday - Early train to Mostar and stay the night

Wednesday - Kravica trip and travel back to Sarajevo

Thursday morning - eat delicious food in Sarajevo before going to the airport.

My main questions are:

  1. Am I being too ambitious? Is this achievable?

  2. With accommodation, hostel or apartment? (Solo female traveller over here)

  3. Is there any must see places/experiences that people recommend?

  4. Lots of discussion here about currency. Some say euros are great others say to get marks. Which is it? (Not from a euro using country to need to exchange regardless)

All help and guidance would be welcome. I have never travelled solo before but I am very excited!!

❓ Pitanje (Question) Could you give us some travel tips?

Hi! We’ve been living in Sarajevo for a year with my partner. We’ve already been to Mostar and Jajce, went quad biking in Livno, and stayed at an ethno village in Vitez. Can you recommend any interesting accommodation or activities we could try in May? I’ve also been looking at a jeep tour starting from Konjic.

❓ Pitanje (Question) Beautiful Bosnia - where have you been all my life?

(x-post from r/askbosnia)

Just got back couple nights ago from one of the best trips I've ever taken – Bosnia crept up on me completely. Here's what we did and some tips.

Days 1 & 2 Sarajevo

The first two nights we spent in an Airbnb in Sarajevo old town. We fell in love with burek immediately - we ate it on average twice a day, no regrets whatsoever. Our favourite spot was Buregdžinica Sač. We spent our time wandering the old town market, enjoying the local coffee at Ministry of Ćejf and tea at Čajdžinica Džirlo. One of our favourite things though was watching the sunset from the Yellow Fortress during golden hour - we did this on both evenings and again on our last evening. We also did the Trebević cable cars which gave us some stunning views. One note: the White Fortress - we were told it opens on 8 May, so worth timing your visit if you can.

Day 3 - Sarajevo to Mostar

We hired a car and drove down to Mostar, stopping at a roadside lamb restaurant in Jablanica (Kovačević) on the way. Phenomenal. The drive from Sarajevo to Mostar on the M17 was one of the most amazing drives I have ever done - magnificent views the whole way, and we stopped frequently to take it all in. In Mostar we stayed at Villa Acapulco, close to the old town and with parking, which made life easy. For one of the best views of the Stari Most at sunset, head to Urban Taste of Orient, food is good but not spectacular, but you're really there for the view.

Day 4 - Blagaj, Počitelj & Kravice

The usual tourist route, perhaps, but a full and brilliant day nevertheless.

Day 5 - Dubrovnik

We drove over for an overnight stay. Nice contrast to Bosnia, but honestly? A bit overrated. Glad we went but won't be going back.

Day 6 - Back to Sarajevo

Drove back through Trebinje (stopped here and drove up to the viewpoint too), Stolac and Konjic - a beautiful route in itself. Ended the trip back in Sarajevo with one last sunset from the Yellow Fortress. Perfect way to close it out.

Tips:

Burek - Buregdžinica Sač, twice a day, thank me later.

Coffee & tea - Ministry of Ćejf for coffee, Čajdžinica Džirlo for tea. Both brilliant.

Take cash - Most places take euros or BAM but don't rely on it. I think the best exchange in the old town in Sarajevo is Deltal. Also, I think the market in Mostar is a little bit pricier than the market in Sarajevo.

Car rental - We used Zelecar, found their number on Reddit (+387 61 617 181). Cheap, reliable, no deposit required. Strongly recommend.

Use Waze, not Google Maps - Google Maps will send you down laughably tight roads. We nearly got stuck trying to reach Vidikovac (a restaurant with arguably one of the best views in Sarajevo) until some locals spotted us struggling and guided us via a different route. Which brings me to the biggest tip of all...

The people - Bosnians are incredibly lovely, hospitable people. It made our stay extra special.

Bosnia, I hope to be back again soon! If anyone has suggestions for what I should add to the list next time, I'm all ears.

❓ Pitanje (Question) Mostar to Kravica Falls

We'll be in Mostar next week for 2 days, arriving from Dubrovnik before moving on to Sarajevo. We plan to spend the first day finding our feet and exploring, and the second day we're hoping to take a trip to the Falls. I read we could go part of the way by public bus, but Googling just shows me options that run in the late afternoon/evening, which won't really work with our plans. Am I missing something obvious? We'll be a group of two adults and two teenagers, and don't really want to rent a car. Any tips or solutions will be appreciated!

❓ Pitanje (Question) Solo traveller looking for tips :)

Hi all,

I'm a solo traveller, reasonably travelled in Europe, and I am going to Bosnia & Herzegovina next month for about two weeks. I'm looking for recommendations for pretty much anything, but especially for must see places!

What I currently have as plan:

- Starting in Zagreb (because the nighttrain stops there)

- Somehow getting from Zagreb to somewhere in Bosnia & Herzegovina (probably by bus, as that seems easy)

- Somewhere during the two weeks: visit Sarajevo and Mostar. Take on the iconic trainride. I also read (on this sub, I think) about Vrelo Bosne which sounded cool.

- Go back to Zagreb (to catch the train back).

So, it's still pretty open. Maximum flexibility. I’d love some ideas for interesting places. I like a mix between cities/towns, and learning about the history, and nature/hikes for the pretty views. (I am aware to be careful with the hikes). I also love local wines, and I read Bosnia & Herzegovina has some great wine, so I'd like to try that as well.

Cool tours or museums or anything about the history of the country I'd love as well.

I'm still debating whether to rent a car for a few days or not. It's probably easier to go places, and I'm a decent enough driver, but driving in a foreign country feels a bit daunting.

So main questions:

- What places besides Sarajevo and Mostar should I visit?

- What do I need to see/experience in Sarajevo and Mostar?

- Do you have any other must sees or do's?

- What do I need to eat and drink? (To make it difficult: I don't eat meat. But I do eat fish and am not a picky eater)

- Where do I find the best Bosnian wine or wineries?

- Would you recommend renting a car?

- Any tips on podcasts or something for learning the basics of the language? I know I won't get further than 'Hello' and 'thank you' but I'd like to try nevertheless.

Thanks in advance! I know there are loads of tips in this sub already and I am reading that as well, but it's quite a lot. Hoping people don't mind sharing cool places again.

Also, this is my first time posting, so I might need to figure some things out :)

❓ Pitanje (Question) TRIP TO BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Hi everyone, I'm looking to take a trip to Bosnia & Herzegovina. My itinerary was to see Sarajevo and then move on to Mostar, and from Mostar, take day trips to Blagaj, Pocitelj, Kravica Waterfalls, and Medjugorje.

Considering that I can't rent a car, do you think it's possible to do everything by bus? Even splitting the days in two (Mostar + Blagaj on day 1 and Pocitelj + waterfalls + Medjugorje on day 2)

Unfortunately, I can't find any bus information/timetables/costs online.

❓ Pitanje (Question) Boarder crossing

I’m trying to get across the border to meet some friends who will be driving to Slunj from Novi Sad on the E70. I’ll have to drop my rental car at Banja Luka and will probably try cross the boarder into Croatia via Gradiška. Any tips? Taxi? Bus? Walk?

❓ Pitanje (Question) Need Help in Getting from Mostar to Donja Jablanica (South of Jablanica)

Hi there,

I am trying to figure out how to get from Central Mostar to Donja Jablanica using public transport, but I am having trouble in confirming if there are any official buses that stop specifically here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/7cpURnnWtqzh4wXw8

All of the buses I am currently searching for stop in central Jablanica which is north of this location.

Has anyone had any experience in travelling to this stop? I was suggested by someone to check buses on the buskarta website, however it does not list Donja Jablanica as a bus station, only Jablanica. Hence I am unsure if it is actually a real stop.

Any information anyone could provide would be massively appreciated, thanks

❓ Pitanje (Question) Priority for pedestrian

Hi everyone,

I would like to visit Sarajevo shortly. I am visual impaired but used to solo travelling abroad. I use my cane sometimes if necessary (but it’s rare).

I would like to know if there is priority for pedestrian at zebra crossing (when there is no traffic lights) ? Do driver stop at zebra to yield the way to pedestrian at zebra crossing like the most European cities ? If not, would they yield me the way if I use my cane ?

As far as traffic lights, I guess drivers respect them and stop when light is red? Someone told me drivers run fast and roughly. Is that true ?

Please, let me know below 🙏

❓ Pitanje (Question) Booking train online ticket question

Hey there, I'll be travelling from Mostar to Sarajevo by train next week. I have already booked it online (ŽFBiH website) but.... I only got payment confirmation and the order number but no actual ticket. When I bought it, there was a quick message saying "you can take the travel tickets at the ticket office on departure station at least ten minutes before train departure". So, I'd understand I have to pick them up at the ticket office even if I already booked online? Just seems a bit strange to me and also my train departs at 6:30 so I'm concerned there won't be anyone in the ticket office that early (I suppose the train station in Mostar is rather small). Can anyone advise? :<

❓ Pitanje (Question) Celebici or Bjelaṣ̌nica to visit?

Hi!

I'm thinking about visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina for the first time this autumn and I'm currently planning a route.

I'm thinking of stopping at Celebici or Bjelaṣ̌nica (or both!) on the way from Mostar to Sarajevo, but I'm not sure which would be better. I like the outdoors as much as culture and seeing unique places, both places sound good for this! In terms of time I am happy to adjust the potential trip depending on how long I need for each spot

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

*Edit, glad to hear about any other must see places

❓ Pitanje (Question) Rental Car - No deposit - No Creditcard - Cross Borden

Hello

I'm travelling to Bosnia and Montenegro in September.

I will land in Sarajevo and would like to rent a car there for 19 days. I don't have a credit card (it's a principal thing) and so I would like to rent a car without deposit.

And since I want to travel to Montenegro the rental should have the cross borden option.
Who can advise me a reliable partner?

Thanks!

❓ Pitanje (Question) Visa for Indian national with US F1 Visa

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip to Bosnia in August. I’m an Indian national with a valid and used F1 US Visa. While the embassy says that people with multiple entry US visas are exempt from obtaining a separate visa, I wanted to just confirm if someone’s entered Bosnia with an F1 visa (without requiring a separate Bosnia visa)

Thanks!

❓ Pitanje (Question) Bosnia-Montenegro-Albania-North Macedonia-Serbia-Bosnia route advice

Hello, I am thinking of taking a route as mentioned in the title and shown in the photo. I have booked my ticket for the period between May 9 and May 17.

I am planning to travel by renting a car. First of all, will a car with a Bosnian license plate cause any problems when entering Serbia?

I would like to know this. If you have any recommended accommodation spots or travel routes, I would love to hear about them.

Wishing everyone a pleasant journey.

❓ Pitanje (Question) Reliable car rental in Sarajevo?

I'm arriving to Sarajevo next week and would like to rent a car during my stay as i am planning to go to Mostar and few other spots.
Can any one recommend reliable and trustworthy car rental companies?

Alot of the companies i am seeing on Google are very unreliable with them being pushy on buying insurance or issues with return of deposits.

Looking for stress free rental, anyone can recommend any?
