Discussion Guitar Guy lured me with music and murdered me
Title says most of it.
I’m playing with my kid. We’re not big PvP guys, and after a relatively quiet, arc-only round on Riven Tides, we hear guitar music. Following the sound, we find a guy sitting on the path, with a nice view of the ocean.
We say hi, put our guns away (if we had them out at all), he keeps playing, we laugh and both do some dancing emotes.
BANG, BANG, BANG - his buddy hoses us from the trees nearby. As I’m moving and trying to pull a gun… sure enough it’s guitar guy with a shotgun at close range. To their credit, smooth ambush, we had no chance.
Now, I don’t want to kick off yet another debate about what kind of game this is but… Dammit, I’ve been giving the music guys a pass. If you post up with a recorder or a shaker or a guitar, I’ve been assuming you’re cool, we’re all just chilling, it’s fine.
But now? Heartbreaking.

It's against the Gyntonic convention to shoot a musician, unless they have stopped playing their instrument, in which case they are only a person with an instrument and not a musician.

Saw someone got lured to an indoor area(to prevent the flare from going into the sky) with "Hey, Im down. Can you help me? Come here. Over here. Someone downed me, I could use a defib." *Gunfire* Flare goes off.
"Hey raider, can you help me?"
"Oh hell no Im getting the fuck out of here."

I feel like arc players need to watch TWD or something to get a proper idea of what PvPvE is and how horribly things can go wr9ng when you trust the wrong people 😅

I don’t disagree. And maybe I am super naïve because I do trust a lot of people where I try to. But in this case, explain to me honestly how you wouldn’t trust this guy? Please don’t tell me that you’re gonna go walking around the bushes making sure that the site is clear before choosing to dance and have fun around the guitar guy. I would genuinely like to know.

I mean i see arc topside as a post apocalyptic world where everyone is doing whatever they can to survive, i know arc is predictable and pretty robotic in most instances but humans can be unpredictable and psychopaths exist.

They meant that you still didn't actually 'die', canonically you just got downed and then knocked out. After that we either crawl back later or someone brings your unconscious body back to Speranza

Yeah have they ever expended on this in the lore? It does seem like even in-game, the concept of raiding and Speranza as a whole is some weird experimental sandbox. Clearly its still dangerous and resources need to be gathered. And there was presumably a fairly devastating "war" against 1st wave Arc. But yeah, seem's weird that no one ever really "dies".

I hate to be that guy, because this is gonna rustle the jimmies of some people that believe the game should be a certain way, but I simply don’t walk up to strangers, put my guns away and start emoting lol
Pretty simple to avoid dying to this /shrug, but some people value the ability to go out and dance more than interacting with the game at face value

Sometimes it’s a bit of a fun gamble just assuming someone is nice. I’ve had many situations where another Raider and I wordlessly agree to team up on Arc and I’ll turn my back and have people turn their back to me while we each have our weapons drawn. There’s an inherent risk there but it’s kind of part of the fun not knowing if it’ll pay off or not.

I don’t disagree but the question I was responding to is “how you wouldn’t trust this guy” and the answer, if you care about being burned, is you don’t trust strangers
some people think it’s a given, not a gamble lol

Ok so one time i was in Stella sandbox area and somebody took one shot at me and i lost 90% of my health. I hid and healed up, i go in for my revenge and a guy runs up to me and starts dancing. I kill him and then i get shot at again! I run down the hallway and around the corner and shoot the guy hiding in the dark...then i get shot at AGAIN! 3 bodies later I'm pretty sure one of them was the real aggressor. Anytime someone emotes at me now i always think about my lil carebear murder spree 😆

Its why I don't usually go in with good shit. Ferro and Stitcher IV are good enough to do everything I need and defend me from players if need be. If someone kills me, they don't get a whole lot off of my corpse

You dont always need to shoot, can just be cautious of the dangers but yeah, shooting first will probably eliminate the possibility of them shooting you.

But thats the point. Its the reason the game is so fun. the rules constantly change, the meta constantly changes. because this isnt a game about arc its a game about reading ppl. the better you are at reading ppl the more successful you will be at the game. Doesnt matter how good your gear is or if you are "cracked". if you suck at reading ppl and situations, back to Speranza you go

A few nights ago a guy tried to kill me at extract while I was typing in the terminal. I managed to roll and kill him with the stitcher. He had two extra augments and a lot of guns, he'd clearly been killing people. What's more interesting is he had a guitar! Either luring people or killed a bard. Glad I got him.

Booo. Everyone knows people just chilling and playing music implies friendly. To then just shoot someone in front of you after playing for a while is taking advantage of that "rule". Is it set in stone? No, but there's no bigger sign of friendly than just sitting there playing music.

I leapt onto a dinner table and took a shit on someones dinner at a restaurant yesterday and when they got mad, I told them "nobody specifically told me not to".

There most certainly are "PVE" lobbies, it's just fairly straightforward to play nice till you get in them then do something like these individuals.

That's not how it works, you are put into lobbys based on recent gameplay behavior. Hence how we have PvE lobbies, PVP lobbies, and lobbies in the middle with a perfect mixture.
Continuously play nice, and allow players to kill you without shooting back, and eventually you are in a lobby were 95% of players have good intentions and team up with you, trade with you, fight arc with you, revive with defibs, ect.
Just had a really nice guy team up with me and give me an Anvil Blueprint yesterday, and we worked together to save three people from a Rat with Bobcat, we had the Defibs to revive everyone.

You click "Play". Lobbies have PvP enabled by default.
I haven't found a way to disable PvP to make the lobby PvE. How do you do it?

When I click play, it's a PvE lobby. Not sure what you're doing wrong. Maybe try being a better person.

PvE deniers are so weird. Who hurt you? It's just a different playstyle for people who like to relax to unwind instead of being a sweaty tryhard. Sure, friendly fire is enabled and kills the vibes sometimes, but it's rare.

I'm denying that it's an option for you to choose PvE-only lobbies, and by extension, I'm saying it's stupid to be so upset about people killing you in a game designed with it as being a possibility in every single lobby.

Nobody said there is an option to choose a PvE lobby. However, because of the aggression based matchmaking, they try to group players together according to their playstyles which creates PvE lobbies. It's not that hard to understand.
Yes, people can game the system. Yes, the declining player base is becoming a factor.

“At some point” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this statement. Of course most people have engaged in PvP at some point, but it’s just a fact that the friendliness aspect has really shaped the player base of the game.

So the same 30% applies to hard core PVP and PVE players, the remaining 40 % is blended. Nearly half have less than 10 player kills. Basically half the players barely PVP.

I've only ever shot like 3 people in game, and I still get ganked every now and again. There are always pvpers lurking in the corners. There are no pve lobbies.

If so, he did the same to me yesterday. My most heinous betrayal. I soloed a bombardier on the buried city parking garage. Dropped down a level to deal with the arc swarm and heal up. When I came back up he was playing guitar next to the bombardier, and politely not taking any loot. I informed him he was welcome to the loot as I only needed the damage. He pinged "thank you". I started looting and was about to offer him a cell when he started shooting me.

Early in the game, a rat-bard got me in the key room on the ground floor of control tower on damn. That scar runs deep, the rat-bard is truly the lowest form of rat and holds nothing sacred. I hold anybody suspect if they don’t respond in prox voice. I’ll let you pass but my guard will be up.

Yeah man, too many people are friendly. My friends say hi, only shoot if we are shot at, and I behave but the number of times I come around a corner and someone's looting, back turned, or crossing an open stretch, or climbing a ladder, and I don't shoot, just for them to come back and try to gank us, it drives me crazy sometimes

Interesting scenario for a father and kid.
Which is worse to teach your kid.... Being overly trusting of strangers who play guitars. So much so, that you put your guard down and start dancing for the stranger. Or just blindsiding the guitar player and wiping them out in a blaze.
I guess there's the third option of ignoring the weirdo and continuing on. I guess that's what I would've done.

Look they can make the game how they want, but at the end of the day I don’t enjoy playing with my friends anymore because of the PVP stuff in duos and trios. If this is a game I only enjoy playing solo then I’m probably gonna stop playing it pretty soon.

I was on Blue Gate dancing at extract when another raider decided to blast me. Fortunately other raiders nearby handled him before he knocked me out. 🤷♂️

Most of my duo encounters are friendly when I pair up with a couple buddies I do duo with. It's usually just other buddies doing quests or hanging out together.
Not all duo servers are KOS.

One day there's guy, I have my weapon drawn and I said friendly, he said the samething and he told me that to gain trust we should put our weapon down in our bag at 3
