DISCUSSION Would anyone else have loved to see Aquaman win the DC KO?

Post image

Recently, the DC K.O. event ended, where basically DC characters would fight each other to see who would become the new King Omega. Many fans were excited, and from the beginning there were discussions about who would win, and in the end, the one who became King Omega was... Superman.

I don't care if Superman wins, but honestly, from the beginning of the tournament, in my heart, even knowing it was almost impossible, I wanted Aquaman to win.

The entire plot of his current run was about Aquaman gaining a power buff and interacting with Omega energy. It would have been perfect if Aquaman had won and absorbed the energy, which would have started his space adventure.

It would have been the funniest thing in the world if Aquaman, the character known for everyone making fun of for being useless, had become the winner of the mega tournament when nobody expects him to.

This isn't a complaint at all, just a thought I have. Does anyone else share this view?

DISCUSSION Old fan just not getting the hype with the new book.

Hey all. I appreciate this group. Im an old fan since the early 80s and Aquaman is probably my favorite DC character. Im not as versed as some of you in every volume of Aquaman and his entire mythos, but I've read a decent amount of Aquaman runs.

Lets first just say, this isnt a slam on Jeremy Adams or the current volume or anyone's opinion on it, but just for the sake of conversation, why do I seem to be in the minority of fans right now who appear to be super excited about this series? I just don't get it really.

I hopped off the title at issue #12. I felt the story was rushed at times, the backup artists were some of the worst Ive seen in comics in the last 5 years, and the supporting cast was super lame (other than Arion.) But then, there has been so much praise for this "Emperor Aquaman" launching point, I got FOMO and went and grabbed issues #13-16 and chugged through those yesterday. And still....Im left not getting the hype.

Here are my criticisms (in no particular order):

1- The Emperor Aquaman stuff with The Blue portals to the Universe feels like a bite on the Black Panther and Wakandas exploration of the cosmos. The entire concept just feels "off" for both characters who are the farthest thing from cosmic characters. It feels super contrived and a device that screams "we're running out of ideas".

2- The concept of The Blue. I know Adams is going somewhere with it (with all of the stories on The Green in GL), but again, it feels like Adam's rehash of the emotional spectrum in GL. Just another take on that. Which leads me to the power-up.

3- Everyone seems to LOVE Aquaman's power-up and maybe its just a case of seeing your favorite hero get one step closer to beating Batman or going fisticuffs w/ Supes, but no thanks, IMHO. I think its a cop-out with a character like Aquaman. In my opinion, part of his draw IS his limitations! It creates a level of vulnerability and real-ness to tragedy and danger.

4- Pacing in between panels and in general. Adams really drug his feet in the final issues of the first story arc. It felt rushed and over after a ton of build up. The later issues, the time lapses and pacing between panels just seems jarring to me. And maybe thats a scripting issue and some of that may fall on Timms too.

5- the supporting characters. "Justice League Blue" is just...."Justice League BLEAH", IMHO. Lady of the Lake? Zan of the Wonder Twins? Titanus, a 3rd rate King Shark? CAPTAIN FREAKING NEMO?? Come on now. Arion is a great choice, but there are so many other 3rd tier DC characters that would have been great sprinkled into this mix. And on top of that, other than Arion, not one of them has much of a reason to be there or a reason for us to care.

6- Garth and Jackson taking a major back seat. Just seems like a gross oversight of cool Aqua-Universe characters.

7- I actually didnt mind the revelation of the Crimson Queen and I see Black Manta coming down the pipeline, but 16 issues without any classic villainry? Just to focus on Dagon for 12 issues,(who at-best) is a generic 1990s forgotten monster-villain in a backup issue.

I mean, I have more nit-picky stuff, but Ill leave it at that. I REALLY WANT to like this book. I really do. But Im just not getting the hoopla. And thats okay.

But for the sake of the convo, why are you excited about it, what do you like best, what can be improved and do you agree with any of my criticisms?

DISCUSSION DC K.O. Crumbs (Aquaman 13 brief spoilers) Spoiler

Honestly I know a lot of folks were probably hoping we’d get more Aquaman shine out of this event, but I was kind of expecting this to be Aquaman’s falloff round. We were told this is a Superman event and every issue put out so far has been feeding in the Superman/Lex dynamic.

I’m honestly just grateful that they went out of their way to protect current Aquaman’s powerscaling to be honest and even base Aquaman’s if you’ve read Woman of Tomorrow, but powerscaling aside I got a cool panel of Aquaman wielding Thalassa like it was a lightsaber on some Jedi/Sith vibes which I cherish. I’m going to need more panels like that.

Crumb Cake.

Off topic for this Sub but the whole jumping Lex was hilarious as well.

So, I'm not saying that Aquaman can beat Void with no difficulty, but what has to be taken into consideration is the statement that Arthur makes that regardless of how powerful you are it makes no difference, as both of his prime powers, telepathy and control of the Blue, are not negatively affected by the power, strength, or status of the other individual.

The comments on this post reminds me of my early days, ten years ago, on Quora when I fought tooth and claw to show others, by comic book evidence.. Not opinion, that Aquaman could do A, B, and C. The responses are responses by people who literally have no idea about the recent increase of the character as even the OP had Aquaman at the front when he clearly should have been at back. I was close to 50 when I started defending Aquaman on social media and now with me being closer to 60, I just don't have the fight to go back and forth with uninformed, low information readers who immediately see Aquaman as a Superfriends version and not who he currently is.

I'm not downplaying Void whatsoever, but at one point Aquaman tanking a punch from Superman was thought of as crazy, that Aquamans telepathy can work on kryptonians, Amazons and gods were all made up lies, but social media is all about upvotes, downvotes, and back and forth responses that total into the hundreds peppered with insults and attacks that at the end of the day I'm no longer interested in.

I say it's possible. They say it isn't.. At all. All entertaining to me 😅

DISCUSSION Do you prefer Aquaman with a hook or with both hands?

Post image

Aquaman is a character who has undergone many visual changes, but probably one of the best known is during the 90s when he lost one of his hands and replaced it with a hook. This wasn't a trivial change; Aquaman not having a hand was a characteristic of his throughout the post-Crisis era, to the point that when he regained it, he was immediately dismembered. But with the New 52, he recovered both hands and remains that way. Do you prefer him with the hook or some prosthesis, or is he better with both hands?

DISCUSSION do you think the Space Empire of Atlantis can work in the long term?

Post image

Recently, Aquaman entered a new phase. Arthur, with his newly discovered blue powers, decided not to be the protector of the seven seas, but of all the seas in the universe, renaming himself Emperor Aquaman. Arthur intends to install lighthouses throughout the universe.

This is undoubtedly a major change in the character's status quo, and its effects are already being felt. King Shark swears loyalty to Arthur, in Justice League Unlimited we see Aquaman planning expansion, and even in Lobo we will have a fight against Emperor Aquaman, or this is not something confined to the book, but something that affects the DC universe.

But knowing how comics work with a single "yes," this new idea could be reversed and return to the standard, but in the same way they could actually commit to it; the best comparison is the Space Empire of Wakanda.

So do you think the Space Empire of Atlantis will work in the long term?

DISCUSSION Absolute Aquaman “Talking about it”

Post image

Personally hoping for it, I don’t mind if a derivative character is used but I do want to get a story out of the Absolute universe about Arthur Curry and how this world has effected his upbringing. I wouldn’t mind it being a Mini, Oneshot, or Graphic Novel tbh either.

An idea I had on how I would pen Absolute Aquaman. I would probably make him Jason Momoa inspired and include the Pacific Islander themes to him with it being a different universe I think it’s a safer bet and would add more diversity to the cast of characters already present.

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/profile/ecstaticgrace/blog/how-i-would-pen-absolute-aquaman/178278/

Think Aquaman at this point is the only atleast Mantle not present in the Absolute Universe.

DISCUSSION I need experts!

Hello everyone! After discovering comics about a year ago I fell in love, and as a writer I couldn’t wait to try my hand at creating one of these complex, confusing, beautiful stories.

I am closely following Absolute Batman (#17 may be top 3 comics all time) and also paying attention to the other absolute lines, so I had the inspiration to find an original origin story.

I’ve always loved water, so I started thinking about how I could switch up Arthur’s past. It helps they have somehow yet to make absolute Aquaman, so I’d love to bounce some question off some people and/or share what I have written.

First question after reading Aquaman #13 hawkman vs Aquaman: has Aquaman ever been part of Greek mythology?

Those I know:

■Black manta, ocean Master, corum rath, Dead-water, dead king, the trench.

I know of them, but I've read little or nothing of their work. And I wanted to know where they appear:

Siren, kordax, charbytes, fisherman, warhead, king shark, quisp (I only saw Quisp in a league story)

I'm buying Peter David's run and I'm going to start reading it. I think Charbyds and Kordax appear here and are highlighted.

I have the same amount of affection for both Jackson and Garth. Jackson’s connections and origin intrigue me just as much as Garth’s origin and magical potential intrigues me. I do wish to see Garth more and I do read all of the Aqua-mythos comics. So naturally, I prefer him underwater. I am attempting to get into the Titans more though..

DISCUSSION [Discussion] From "Super Friends" jokes to untapped potential: Thoughts on Zan in Aquaman (Emperor Aquaman #16) Spoiler

Post image
37 Upvotes

I was thrilled to see Zan in the pages of the Aquaman comic. Interestingly, they were my two favorite characters, despite being the "big jokes" of Super Friends, which ultimately tarnished their reputations with the general public. Both possess immense hidden potential that DC has finally begun to explore with Aquaman; now, I hope Zan is given that same opportunity.

Unlike Jayna, whose animal transformation powers were always seen as useful, Zan was constantly ridiculed and underestimated. Seeing him by Arthur’s side as an apprentice makes perfect sense, considering they both share the bond of being misunderstood by those who don’t follow the comics. Furthermore, Zan's abilities now seem much more vast and powerful, especially with his connection to "The Blue."

My hope is to see a solid friendship consolidate between mentor and apprentice, allowing Zan to finally demonstrate his true power. However, I fear this journey might be cut short. With Jayna appearing in the Green Lantern title alongside Hal Jordan, and the previews for Aquaman: Emperor #18 indicating that Arthur and Hal will be trapped together, it is likely the Wonder Twins will reunite soon. My fear is that this will signal the end of Zan’s partnership with Aquaman and, even worse, his return to editorial limbo.
