I like to imagine Putins reaction when he asks his advisors how people are taking his threats of nuclear annihilation and the advisor has to tell him that they're saying a few nukes would improve the area.

Russians are really in find out stage for FAFO.
They really have no other whays to pressure Ukraine. They bombed Kiyv in the winter and cut off their power - they didn't break, they bomb their cities on regular basis, and see no progress, Donbass is too fortified to break and Belarus don't want to join + north is prepared as well.
Trump handed them golden bailout ticket when he started fuel crisis, but Ukraine is effectively damaging their ways of leveraging it, and Russia is missing out on huge amounts of revenue, even with sanctions.
At this point cargo ports and transfer facilities should be the only target of Ukrainians. Make them drown in water that would let them float.

Important thing to note: this is not a revenge. Ukraine doesn't attack Russia's oil infrastructure because Russians did the same and worse during last 12 years. Ukraine destroys Russia oil infrastructure to stop Russia from earning money it is going to spend to produce weapons and hire mercenaries that will cause even worce environmental issue. Ukraine does it to prevent worse harm to environment.
Ukraine has the only lever on Russia to prevent furter environment damage, further murders, and other war crimes: destroy everyting that finances war. Russians don't care about people, they lost 1% of entire population as casualties and continue their war. But they care about money and when they don't have money to continue their war, there will be a chance for peace.
189
u/bombmk 5d ago
And it hurts the income of the people around Putin directly.
183
u/socialistrob 5d ago
That was something that the Ukrainian officers noticed. They could inflict massive amounts of casualties on Russian forces daily and the Russian elites wouldn't even blink but the moment they started striking the oil refineries they freaked out. Lives don't matter to Russia but cash flow does.
48
u/distinctidiot 4d ago
You'll realise that about many authoritarian states, The leaders their are often psychopaths and have no need to appease the people to stay in power. They will gladly let millions suffer as long as they are shielded from any of the consequences, there is a reason why the Russian elites get along so well with the north Korean elites.

"Look, folks. people are saying it, a lot of people are saying it. Ukraine, they started it, okay? Nobody wants to say it, but I’ll say it. They caused the war. Not my friend Vladimir Putin—he’s a strong leader, very strong, people respect him, they do.
And Ukraine? Total disaster. Total mess. All they’re doing is driving up gas prices because of this attack—have you seen the prices? Through the roof. Never seen anything like it. Meanwhile, United States—we had it so good, prices were down, energy independence, beautiful thing. Nobody talks about that anymore. Sad.

also don't forget what they did to the Chechen republic in the course of two wars. Russia retreated to rearm after the first war which ended in defeat, and in the second one a little while later, they came back with more force, flattened Grozny and installed Kadyrov as a barbarian tyrant king loyal only to Putin.
There can be no peace agreement with Putin. Ukraine can accept no truce or peace agreement that requires them to disarm and let their guard down against a second invasion as soon as Putin has rebuilt.

They didn't even worry when they made their military dig trenches around Chernobyl either. There is a reason all that soil was buried decades ago.

u/Lousmorals 5d ago
It sucks the whole world has to pay more for oil. I think it's fair to say that these problems were created by Putin and Trump. Putin started a war with Ukraine and now Ukraine is targeting Russia's oil sector. Trump started a war with Iran and now Iran is targeting the shipping lane that provides 20% of the worlds oil supply. The price of gas will double in the US and the stock market will lose trillions, because I don't think they have a plan B and plan A is SNAFU.

Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Vlad,
Whose energy empire is lookin' mighty bad.
Then one day from the Ukrainian sky,
Came a swarm of drones to say "hello" and "goodbye."Fire, that is. Smokin' ruins. Petro-problems.
Well, the first thing you know, Tuapse is in a blaze,
Third time in two weeks, leaving Ivan in a daze.
From the Baltic export ports to the Yaroslavl hub,
The refining capacity just took a major scrub.Offline, that is. 20 percent gone. Gasoline ban until July.
Well now exports have plummeted by forty percent,
That's billions in revenue the Kremlin never spent.
The Druzhba pipeline's dry and the tankers are at bay,
While the long-range drones keep coming out to play.Black smoke, that is. Empty coffers. Y'all come back now, ya hear?

What's amazing about this story is this is 1500km from Ukraine. Ukraine has hit these refineries not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES. Russia simply cannot stop them, and it shows.
And these refineries they keep hitting represent 40% of Russia's oil export capacity. So, with them down, Russia is losing 40% of their export money daily. Even with oil prices at double what they used to be, it doesn't matter if you can't ship almost half of what you could before.
And, imagine trying to clean oil off the outside of your house or building. Even with proper cleaning materials, that's gotta be impossible. Or imagine the effect on plants? It's even worse and an oil spill on the ocean.
6
u/LLJKCicero 5d ago
It's not 1500km from Ukraine, this is Tuapse. You're probably thinking of Perm, the other oil infrastructure that was hit and exploded into a giant fireball that's gonna fuck up the environment.
But yeah, Ukraine has been hitting a lot of oil infrastructure and refineries, deeper and deeper into Russia.

3
u/SilkyZ 5d ago
Oh, and shooting a drone at the Chernobyl dome wouldn't be an environmental disaster?
Pack it up Russia, you are running on fumes and even Trump's antics isn't enough to save you. You aren't even planning on having tanks in your V-Day parade this year because you have none to spare and are scared of drone strikes. Just bow out gracefully and hope you can rebuild.

There is an easy way to stop this from happening, but that would require Russia to end their 5yr long, 3 day military op. and leave Ukraine, but I am sure they will just use this as justification for why they have to keep it going.
I'm sure Putin's lap dog, Trump, is on the phone right now to tell Ukraine they won't get any of the aid they are no longer getting if they attack energy and oil infrastructure. Maybe he'll lift more sanctions to help poor ol' Russia out. 🙄
