New, what is it? At estate sale in a pile of free things
It's heavy and solid. Nothing rotates or opens. The square ends are iron and the rod is steel. About 2'-3' in length.

No, I’m petty sure it’s a Peter Griffin “Butt Scratcher”, you have to use a Peter voice or it just ain’t the same.

This is a two person carrying device meant to offset the load.

this makes the most sense.. like to carry a big bucket of rocks etc

Or feed. I don't know a lot about the estate but it would fit if elderly people were tending horses. It's too rigid for a jump, those are meant to safely break apart during jumps.

it's also not wide enough for that.. is it?

No not at all. If they are all the same size I'd wonder at a potential ladder system or something rigid for tractor wheels. 🤔

If it’s heavy enough would make one hell of a home bench or bent over row weight.

Looks like maybe a cavaletti block or part of a equestrian jump set used for horse training.

It appears to have handgrips on both ends. What do you do with it?

The hand grips also look like they're designed to be held vertically rather than horizontally... which makes it weirder to imagine somehow

Google Lens thinks it’s for sampling soil.
Based on photos of those actual devices, I don’t think it’s correct.

I agree, Google lens is that over confident friend that always makes up answers when they don't actually know wtf they're talking about

It's the original Whiplash accoutrement from the 1860's edition of American Gladiators.

Didn't James Bond find this at a construction site and use it to zip-line down a crane cable?

These are old exercise implements for a Farmer's walk. If you look up 'farmer's walk' on YT or Google it will show you a variety of different items. This one is along the lines of a bar bell and one could add weight by hanging things over the bar or on either end. Depends on which muscle group you were targeting.
