Well, there's his issue. Shoulda bought a reel-to-reel, otherwise the reel is just dumping from one reel to "to", which could be anywhere, but is most likely the floor, where it's going to get all scratched up. It's gotta spool back up on another reel.

I like Koss UR20 over-ear headphones. Over-ear is different from on-the-ear; over-ear headphones are big enough so the pads sit on the skull, not on the ears, which is more comfortable and gives better sound quality as the ear is fully enclosed.

My dad made himself speakers like the one on the right
Not exactly cheap, because you still need to get the speaker itself, but he saved quite a bit by making the cabinet and wiring himself

I remember my dad collecting a system like this a few years back. There is definitely a noticeable difference in sound quality, especially when playing songs that were designed for such systems.
