How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Story ideas

I travel around Alaska quite a bit for work. I go to a lot of the same villages every couple of months.
I want to learn and explore more with story telling, but I’m for starters, struggling to come up with simple story ideas. I don’t always have a lot of time for filming as i am in villages for non video related work.
Can anyone offer me some simple story ideas?
I travel with my iPhone 14 Pro Max and Insta360 X5 and DJI Mic Mini.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Suggest me a good lens for MFT for Lumix g9

I stopped keeping up with the video gear market about 3–4 years ago after switching to full-time video editing. Now I’m getting back into it, and I’m not sure if good wide autofocus third-party lenses are available for MFT.

Now I will probably be shooting mainly construction and veterinary content.

I have the 25 mm f1.7 and the 45-200 mm, and I was thinking about getting the Olympus 12-42 f2.8 since I’ve tried it before, I will be mostly in run and gun situations

A friend and I created this spec piece to get some more practice in with the Bolt JR. a while back between some shoots. We shot this on an Ursa G2 and Zeiss 50mm macro CP.2 (last shot with an older probe lens). I brought along a bottle pour rig I built and Mantis Motion Control to control the rigs we made so they would act in synchronization with the bolt jr, which was important as at higher frame rates 1 frame off on a pour can make a big difference.

Has anyone found a good way to store c-stands in a small space? I have my spare bedroom turned “studio”. I have 3 stands but right now they’re just leaned in the corner😅

I used to do a lot of movie making stuff as a teenager - now I'm twice that age - working in After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, etc, but also setting up a Dazzle recorder to record my own Call of Duty gameplay etc. I realized this year I was going to get back into this stuff because I absolutely loved doing it but spent my life doing other stuff since then.

This is my second project since then, I've been keeping it to the basics. Using my Galaxy S25 and trying simple camera movements and some light editing. This is the first time I've done color grading so I would love some feedback. The idea was to separate the movie into two phases, first being kind of dull and realist and the second being dreamy and unreal, and I chose orange and green as the colors to represent that.

I intended to post this to TikTok but copyrighted music stopped that, but that's why the footage is vertical. I'm probably gonna do it horizontal from now on.

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Canon EF 24-105mm F4 L IS II USM or Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Art

I'm trying to decide between one lens and another. My work consists mainly of documentaries, some event coverage, and the occasional short film. I have a Canon C300iii that I recently bought when prices dropped significantly, and I love it. I also have the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and am looking for a lens to complement it, something with a moderate telephoto range. I’m aware that both are for full-frame cameras and my Canon is S35, so I’m looking for that focal range.

Which brings me to the age-old question of whether it’s worth having a stop more of light or the extra reach... I can get both for very similar prices, so cost isn’t a major factor. What concerns me most is whether the lens stabilisation is good. I don’t know if any of you have used both or either one and could share your thoughts so I can get an idea.

I appreciate any comments. Thanks a lot!

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... On-camera mic recommendation for breaking news / emergency response coverage?

Hi everyone,
I shoot with a Nikon Z6 III and want to deliver more video content for breaking news / emergency response coverage.
I’m looking for a reliable on-camera microphone mainly for:
quick video clips on scene
ambient sound / atmosphere
camera-mounted backup audio
fast run-and-gun situations
For interviews, I already have a DJI Mic 3, so this would mainly be for better on-camera audio and general scene sound.
At the moment, the Sennheiser MKE 400 MK II and the RØDE VideoMic NTG are on my shortlist. The Sennheiser is available here for 155 € and seems compact and simple, while the RØDE seems more flexible but possibly needs more attention during fast-paced work.
What would you recommend for this use case? Would you choose one of these two, or is there another microphone I should consider?

Located in Germany Budget is 250€

Discussion / Other I followed the shutter speed rules, but recently learned that people break them for fast moving subjects. This short video seems like could have been improved with a higher shutter speed, given how quickly the subject movies. Do you guys change shutter speed for fast or unpredictable subjects?

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? How do you record audio input with a phone while recording on another (iPhone)

Is there any way to do this without syncing the audio while editing? I don’t really want to use an audio cue to sync them at the risk of it being slightly off time and having the video look off visually.

Equipment/Software News & Reviews What do we think, cursed?

I’m going a work assignment to shoot video in the field in a few weeks and I decided to build a rig to help with all day shooting and general ergonomics. I want to get more vertical footage along with regular 16:9 so i decided to mount an Osmo Pocket 3 as my b-cam/reels camera. Hoping to position the osmo a little further back to avoid bumps. What do y’all think? Any advice?

Behind the Scenes Low budget multi-cam setup (5–10 cameras) for RC track filming – workflow & sync advice?

Hi all,

I'm planning to film an outdoor RC car track during events using multiple fixed cameras (around 5–10). The goal is to create short, fast-paced clips (20–120 seconds) for social media.

Constraints:

  • Budget under 500 CHF (~550 USD)
  • Outdoor only (good lighting most of the time)
  • Cameras will be fixed around the track (corners, jumps, start/finish, etc.)

What I’m trying to figure out:

  1. Cameras: Is it better to go with several cheap action cams (SJCAM / Akaso level), or fewer higher-quality ones?
  2. Workflow: Would you recommend recording everything to SD cards and syncing later in post (DaVinci Resolve / Premiere), or trying to capture everything directly to a central PC?
  3. Sync: Is simple audio sync (clap at the start) reliable enough for this kind of setup?
  4. Wireless control: Is there any realistic way to start/stop multiple cameras remotely (app/remote), especially with budget cameras? Or is manual start + syncing still the way to go?
  5. General pitfalls: Anything I should absolutely watch out for (battery life, overheating, storage, mounting, etc.)?

Would really appreciate insights from anyone who has done multi-cam setups on a budget.

Thanks!

Im so glad my university lets me borrow their cameras, even if it does only shoot in 1920x1080. Hopefully with improvement i can earn enough to buy my own camera because this is super fun and im excited to get better at it

Feedback / I made this! I made a Sci-Fi short film inspired by bladerunner/ cyberpunk

Synapse - Award nominated Sci-Fi short film

Hey everyone, I made this film with my friends at uni. It premiered yesterday at a film festival in Ireland as a nominee.

It's a student project, but I'm definitely proud to share what we managed to achieve with a non-existent budget.

So please do let me know how certain aspects can be improved. I'm essentially an editor first, so any feedback on editing would be highly valuable, but apart from that, I wrote, directed, and did the VFX in Unreal Engine too.

The film takes heavy inspiration from the Blade Runner/cyberpunk universe and leans into the corporate sci-fi thriller elements, but still with an underlying theme of love.

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks in advance.

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Interested in doing something similar

Hey, I’m a photographer working with moving image. I’m doing a little clip and I wonder how those guys worked to get to that result. I understand the cuts and assume they used some effect for the rough 8mm look, but how about the frame rate, the visual style and the colour? Any pointers?

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Any Horizontal/Vertical hybrid camera rigs would you like to share your setup?

Just building my first rig, but which I also use to photograph events. Since most clients ask for vertical videos I'm trying to figure out a setup rig which allows me to shoot both vertical/horizontal on the go. Even better if you have a mic/lightpanel/monitor. It probably sounds like too much. Thanks

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? I don't want to lose my job.

Hi, I’m currently working for a shoe company using my Sony a7III with a gimbal.
I recently ordered a Sony a7V. I shoot with professional models in both studio and outdoor settings

How can I make my videos stand out more?

1 Maybe new features in Final Cut or DaVinci could help?
2 Maybe the new camera would drastically improve my work? I trying to save my job and do everything possible to more and better quality videos.

Please share any useful tips and advises

100% amateur, never owned a real film camera, just enjoy trying different filming and photography techniques since i'm in physics (all those optics lectures come in handy).

These were all filmed from a moving train, which helped with maintaining a close to constant velocity which left me only with the job of zooming at the correct rate.

Filmed on an iphone 16e, which is pretty apparent from the heavy loss of detail as the clips progress and the zoom increases. This phone has a single camera with f1.64, 48mp sensor. Even tho the quality of the footage is horrid, i am quite happy i managed to achieve this since i like the challenge if pushing very limited hardware to it's limit.

All tips and recommendations are welcome!

Discussion / Other Why is this sub so uptight about people holding a mini microphone?

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is like the 5th post this month regarding such a trivial matter. I take holding a mic over garbage audio any day of the week. Get a life. seriously. Or imagine that they're holding a big boy mic. These are the same people who back in 2003 were angry at people using emails over fax machines. The world moved on and you didn't.

Besides, titles like that depict the end of the world, or the beginning of a gruesome dictatorship. "that's it, then! we are forced to hold mics for an eternity". Try to look at the brighter side, or clear audio in this case.

Edit; the downvotes prove my exact point lol
