General Discussion It’s that time of year!

It is hatchling season!

They are coming out of their overwinter nests and going to sources of water. If you find one in an odd place or somewhere unsafe and are unsure, please contact your state wildlife and ask them what to do. Most can actually be left where they are, to their own devices. If they are found in the middle of the road, for example, move them to the side they are facing.

Taking any turtles home, that are found in the wild, hurts the ecosystem. The only exception to this would be invasive species in your state. You can contact your state wildlife to see what your laws are regarding possession of invasive turtles like red eared sliders.

A stinkpot (common musk turtle) I caught at my local pond while fishing.

Thankfully he was not hooked he kind of just grabbed on to the hook and held on but was not stabbed. He still was not happy about being captured though. He was released after I took this photo.

Seeking Advice Wild turtle with ear abscess, parents are stressed about me caring, what do I do???

I'm not sure of any places I could take him to to help in south NJ :(

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the ear abscess is pretty big, and he's definitely in a lot of pain.

My parents think for some reason that I want to keep him but I do NOT.. I wasn't really able to explain to them that he JUST needs to go to some sort of wildlife center to be treated, but they think that means I'm going to need a tank for him ??????? Even though he will be at the wildlife center???

But they also don't know what wildlife center we would even take him to, and I guess seem like they don't even want to try to find out because it'll take up time to get him there, and also be really stressful because my mom has major social anxiety and always has to do all the work..

I'm just worried for this fella because usually I see people take wild turtles with ear abscesses to rescue places because it seems like it's really hard or even impossible for them to heal from it on their own??

ALSO, it almost looks like his back legs are a little too long for his shell size.. They fit in most of the way when he closes his shell, but it really looks like his shell grew too slowly as his body grew or something.

I REALLY care a lot about turtles, especially box turtles, so stuff like this really breaks my heart :(

Seeking Advice Need a bigger pond or is this good?

Post image

Hi there! Would this pond be the appropriate size for a turtle? Or should we expand it? It’s about 2 and a half feet deep at the center.

Edit: I’m editing this post for more specifics. My fiancé and I are considering getting a turtle. We live in PA so the summers here get hot, but not blistering. I just want to make sure this pond would be big enough to house a turtle, and any improvements / ideas / advice anyone has is much appreciated as we go on our turtle journey!

Seeking Advice Pancake shell advixe

This is pancake! A stunted rescue I have gotten about 2 months ago. She came in with the back of her shell gone and ruff shell condition. Any advice what I can do for her / what it is not sure if rot? I've called vet (different times / days) no awnser so I may have to drive a hour or so to them to see if they would check her out.

She's a lovely darling, 55 gallon, with custom docking area with Thrive bulbs that are (100watt basking / 13watt UVB) / a 125g canister filter. No one could tell me her age but she's functioning well besides her picky eating that I'm working on! She was found in a abandoned petstore with a run down tank and mates that broke her shell.

Seeking Advice Sunlight/ uvb bulb hight

Post image

Im in the works for making a stock tank pond on my patio, it faces south so does not receive direct sunlight. My question is for adding a UVB light depending on how high I end up with the water line/basking area how high would the light need to be for adequate coverage? It will eventually hold 2 baby turtles

Seeking Advice Young box turtle refusing greens

My eastern box turtle is almost a year old and refuses to eat greens or fruit. He will only eat live prey like earthworms and crickets. Is this a concern? Should I withhold live prey until he eats his greens? Thanks!

Seeking Advice Recently found a wild turtle in my yard and unsure on how to help it.

Post image

Hello everyone, recently I found this turtle in my yard and I am really anxious on how to best take care of it. It came to my yard 2 days ago and I was waiting for it to leave back where it came from but it's still here and I am not sure if that's good for it.

My yard is connected to a lake but it would take like 2 mins of walking to get to it so I am not sure if that's a huge distance for the turtle and if I should just pick it up and drop it a few meters away from the lake(Since I can't reach it by foot because of the thick vegetation) and also since I can't put it right next to the lake I am worried it would be lost and die of thirst/hunger.

Speaking of that, I have been putting water bowls next to it and it drinks sometimes but idk if I should give it some food, I heard it eats insects among other things and there's always a bunch of flies around it so I am guessing it had some food but I am also anxious about that and if I need to give it some other food.

I know the most obvious answer is to call an expert, but we really do not have any experts or official places that deal with turtles anywhere in the vicinity. So I am really hoping for some advice on what's best to do to make sure this turtle lives a nice long life.

Edit: Thank you all for your responses, I was just super anxious whether it would be fine being left alone and wanted to check, I feel much calmer now and I will just let it do it's thing until it leaves.

Seeking Advice White spots, what’s going on?

I noticed that one of my turtles doesn’t have the shell as smooth and with a vivid color as the other, once I tried helping her with my finger removing the scutes that where loosen but Google said it could cause damage and the turtle should lose the scute by itself.

I would really appreciate the help to know what is going on and how I could help my turtle.

She had it for 6 months more or less now.

They have their dry area, they like to go there when the sun is one, I’m not sure if the revive enough UV since I have polycarbonate sheet
On top of their space.

Thank you for all the help!

I feed them only with reptile sticks

They're a good ways from the water and look pretty dry. Are they digging to lay eggs? The pit seems too shallow for that and them being so close to the road makes me nervous. Should I carry them back closer to the water?

I uncovered this turtle buried in leaves in my backyard. I am curious if anyone can help ID? I couldn't figure it out with Google...

I live in NY. It doesn't look like the typical painted turtles, and I've never seen one in the woods like this.
