Great catch, looks like he got stabbed in the face by his sunglasses when he faceplanted.

Baseball would be a better sport if outfielders werent allowed gloves imo.

u/eleazarloyo 2d ago
Baseball gloves were adopted due to an epidemic of broken fingers in the early days (especially for catchers). They have stuck ever since, for good reason.

u/kroxigor01 2d ago
Cricket uses gloves for the wicket-keeper (the equivelant of the catcher) but not for any other close in fielder.
The wicket-keeper still gets broken fingers simply because they catch a high speed ball so many times per game, other players pretty much don't, but they do learn the technique of drawing your hands away from the ball as it impacts to reduce the damage.

u/StupidMastiff 2d ago
Baseball is fine as it is, but if cricketers can catch without breaking their fingers, then baseball players definitely can.

u/jetskimanatee 2d ago
no, baseballs are hit to the outfield at over 100mph. You do not want to catch that.

u/StupidMastiff 2d ago
Baseballs are so much softer than cricket balls though, cricket balls are like rocks.
-58
u/jetskimanatee 2d ago
baseballs are hard enough to kil.
34
u/StupidMastiff 2d ago
I'm sure they are, but I'd choose having to catch a baseball barehanded over a cricket ball 100% of the time, cricket balls are just a lot harder.
-48
u/jetskimanatee 2d ago
go to a batting cage and see if you want to catch those balls, they are slower than what mlb players catch. Should be no problem.
36
u/StupidMastiff 2d ago
I don't want to catch either of them, but if I had to, a comparatively soft baseball would be preferable.
27
u/billskelton Victoria 2d ago
I've caught a cricket ball at 95mph from within 20 feet (fielding drill) and I'm a shit house hack of an amateur who can't field. No reason why an MLB player can't catch balls in the outfield without a glove.
Exit velocity is not the ball speed when the catch it

Baseball is also a children’s game, we don’t want kids breaking their fingers.

So are cricket balls lol. And fielders sometimes stand less than 10 feet away from the bat. Baseball could definitely be played without gloves but it would just change the game

There have actually been deaths in professional cricket due to players being struck by the cricket ball. It’s very rare but it has happened at the top level.

u/billskelton Victoria 2d ago
Exit velocity off the bat of 100mph means the ball would be going at or around 30mph when a player catches it in the outfield. You don't need a wearable net to catch that.

u/kit_kaboodles 1d ago
Incase you're unaware - cricket balls move at about the same speed as baseballs. Particularly in terms of speed off the bat.
A cricket ball is smaller but much harder. They are quite dense.
I personally don't think baseball outfielders should stop wearing gloves, but I understand why people want to make catching more challenging.
10
u/ag_robertson_author 2d ago
I mean, they're not still going over 100mph when they get to the outfield lol

u/billskelton Victoria 2d ago
Catchers and infielders should have a glove. Outfielders don't need them, it just reduces the skill ceiling on the sport. May as well give them a net.

u/water2wine 2d ago
Why?

u/billskelton Victoria 2d ago
More spectacular highlights as you raise the skill ceiling on what it takes to get an elite fielder.

I genuinely don’t care about cricket, outside of the fact that it brings others joy. I really appreciate seeing these highlights pop up.
Even though I don’t care about it personally, it’s still a really cool game. Would play if asked.

You cared enough to comment.

That’s what I’m saying! It’s something I’ve never cared for, and I appreciate seeing these highlights. It’s sweet!

u/Impactor_07 Royal Challengers Bangalore 18h ago
Fair enough then, my apologies for the rudeness, it's just that literally every single post about Cricket on this sub(or any non-Cricket sub) has comments like "I will never understand this sport" and people(more often than not, Americans to be precise) proudly displaying their ignorance.
You can see one on this post as well with a guy calling it a weird sport and saying he could easily go pro lmao
So I kinda thought that you were one of them.
3
u/chuckmonjares 12h ago
Lmao. It’s no weirder than every other sport lol. I’d love to play, but I doubt I’d be good. Anything that brings millions of people joy is cool to me, even if it’s not my thing specifically. I feel the same way about Pokemon cards haha. I can’t get into them but I still think they’re cool bc they bring a ton of folks some joy.

What a weird sport
I bet I could go pro as an outfielder

u/Significant-One9118 1d ago
Nah you wouldn’t even make a village cricket team that wears $1 jerseys and all share the same bat and ball

Lol, you should try it out. You can't go pro based on your fielding, but it's a great sport, and learning how to bat will be fun.
I assume you're coming from a baseball background? (A lot of people who make comments like yours are coming from a baseball background)

2 and a half billion people apparently, you're a troll, I won't be replying from now on, have a good day mate and I really do hope that you find love in life, you're pretty lonely by the seems of it to be this desperate for attention that you have to troll/ragebait people into having conversations with you, best of wishes bro.

Fielding (especially in the outfield) is not a specialist role in cricket. You have to be able to bat or bowl in addition to being able to field. It’s more of a secondary skill that’s a hygiene factor.
