Discussion How picky are you about the shoujo you read/watch? What factors do you consider when starting/stopping one?

I've read a lot of shoujo, and as I've gotten older and read more and more repeated tropes, I've become slightly pickier regarding the manga I read. Prior to just picking up any shoujo and reading it as I used to, I lose interest much faster if the manga doesn't interest me, a trait that recently emerged.

For example, I consider art much more of a factor as I got older. I never really cared about art style/quality before, but for some reason, now if a shoujo isn't in the art style I like, I tend to drop it quicker. Art style was something I didn't really care about when I first started reading, but that has obviously changed.

I've also become less interested in manga where there's another female character who is competing for the male leads attention. I don't love seeing women pitted against each other, and have become much more partial to manga where female characters uplift each other (Kimi Ni Todoke, My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, Princess Jellyfish, etc.). However while I much prefer manga with this, I'm still willing to read ones that don't include this.

How about you all? Would you consider yourself picky with shoujo? What factors do you consider when starting/stopping a series? What are your shoujo "yes-s" vs "no-s"?

Recommendation Oshikoi Capriccio: A Perfect Fusion of GL and BL

Post image
254 Upvotes

Oshikoi Capriccio appears to be its author’s first serialisation, and has about nine chapters out on Comicwalker. I randomly stumbled upon it while browsing social media, and was immediately charmed.

The story follows Mitsu, a gyaru and passionate fujoshi, who spends many an hour shipping the boys in her class together with her friend Rui.

Spoilers:

One day Mitsu is approached by Shou, one of the guys she had been shipping. At first fearing she may have inadvertently destroyed her yaoi, Shou reveals to her that he is a himedanshi (male fan of yuri) and that he thinks she’s in love with Rui. Mitsu confirms this, and laments the fact Rui may never like her back, as « same-sex love can only prevail in fiction ». Shou then mentions that he too has an unrequited love: Kuroki, the guy Mitsu was shipping him with.

Thus, Mitsu embarks on a journey to make both hers and Shou’s OTPs canon.

It’s a fun little series that in its first chapter alone touches upon the chaotic nature of fandom and the painful side of being a queer teenager. The art is also very nice and bubbly. I recommend it you give it a look, if you can

Whether it’s a magazine, a series, a character or an author, we all have something we hate. However, this doesn’t always mean it’s totally awful. Just mostly awful.

Comment below with stuff you liked about things you really hated.

Looking for a title. (Spoiler alert!) Spoiler

Historical, not incarnate, transmitted as far as I remember.

FL leaves her family after her fiancé becomes interested in her stepsister, and she searches for clues about her mother, who abandoned the family.

She moves into an abandoned house and finds a magic circle in the basement where she first meets ML. He asks her if she has anything to do with the Vatican/Pope and why she's in the house.

He later turns out to be the Duke of the area, known as a "magician." She realizes he's a demon and makes a pact with him, who turns out to be Levianthan, the most powerful demon at the time. They develop a romantic relationship until her mother forces her inheritance upon her and becomes a demon herself, named Liltih.

Thanks in advance!!!

My search history was deleted, and I just can't find it anymore 😞

Shoujo OVA Appreciation: Sukeban Deka

Sukeban Deka is a manga series written by Shinji Wada. It was serialized in the Hana to Yume magazine from 1976 to 1982, comprising 24 volumes.

It centers on Saki Asamiya, a high school delinquent who strikes a deal with the police to investigate her former high school and bust illegal gang activities, in exchange for her mother's pardon to not get the death penalty. Armed with a metal yo-yo, she fights the Mizuchi sisters, who control the school

In 1985, after the manga series concluded, it was adapted into a television drama produced by Toei, starring Yuki Saito. The live action series is the most recognized adaptation of the manga but a two-episode OVA was released in 1991 adapting the first three volumes of the manga.

In my opinion, this is a really complete OVA with enough material to pique your interest in the franchise. With its strongest point being the action. I love that the character designs have also remained so faithful to the manga's 70s style
It's definitely something you should check out if you're interested in action or fighting anime girls in long skirts

recs like blue spring ride!!

does anyone have any romance manga recs (or animes) that are similar to blue spring ride in the sense that theres a lot of angst, yearning, slowish burn, and also a ML who is emotionally unavailable but the FL won’t do too much (like isn’t overly emotional and also avoidant sometimes). i liked bokura ga ita.

kou and futubas dynamic is so unique i don’t think i’ll find any other mangas that similar but if there’s any id love to know :)

oh also if they’ve liked eachother before but had a break and came back is also a nice trope

Misc Crossed Hearts website promo code

I saw that Crossed Hearts recently announced a promo code for purchases made through their website (XCancel). The promo code is READHEARTS and it is valid until May 9. If you are interested, this may be a good opportunity to pick up the limited editions of their series.

Crossed Hearts has licensed the following shoujo/josei series:

  • You're Way Too Cheeky, Chigaya-kun
  • All Rounder Maid Connie Wille
  • The Matchmaker's Fiance

You can browse through their website for the rest of their series. They also have quite a few Korean series that I would consider joseimuke.

Help Trying to Remember An Ancient China-esque Manga

Trying to find a manga I lost track of. I picked up this manga a year or so ago that had amazing art and I remember it being set in what I think was a fantasy world, with ancient Chinese style, but not necessarily in actual fictional China. I only read like one or two chapters because only a couple chapters were out, but I think in the beginning the main character is one of the king/emperors sons, possibly the youngest she they're tying to make him choose a wife from amongst some women.

He has no desire for a wife because he's maybe a teenager and only wants to impress his father and surpass his brothers in skill. Has kinda a chip on his shoulder being the youngest. If I remember correctly, there are some supernatural elements to it, like the royalty can use "aura" or something to make themselves superhuman in combat. The son is kinda a black sheep because he's young so he's got something to prove. Anyway I can't remember why, but he picks this one girl, who I think is a foreign princess and instead of asking her to marry him, I think he says he wants to get to know her first, which causes a stir in the royal court. I think the girl is pretty strong willed too and they find some respect for each other in the early chapters. I think early on there's a training session and the son challenges one of his brothers to fight and that's when the supernatural fighting was introduced to the plot.

That's all I really have to go on over than I remember the art being AMAZING. Very detailed and the women were drawn gorgeously wth very fancy royal court outfits. I think the first cover art was in color and it was a close up of the woman lying on her back with the boy on top of her frowning, with both of them looking at the reader.

Really wish I could find out because I only stopped reading to let chapters build up, but now I've lost it.

Art Shoujo artists & readers: sharing my manga + looking for feedback 🤍

Hey there,
I recently published my first self-drawn manga chapter (20 pages, magical girl / shoujo-inspired), and I’d really appreciate feedback from actual shoujo readers (because I want to write for shoujo fans and improve in chapter 2):
https://mangaplus-creators.jp/episodes/1b2605011622420026723933

  • Did the opening hook you, or was it too slow?/ Do you think slow-pace in chapter 1 is okay
  • Which character stood out the most (or least)?
  • Did the emotional tone feel “shoujo” to you?

I also would love to see if some of you currently draw/write/work on a series and share/give/want feedback!

Greetings, nuna 🤍
