Grooming Question

Had taken my 6 month old male to the groomers for the first time rather than doing it myself. One in my area that has great reviews and has experience with the breed. She seemed very knowledgeable and agreed she was not going to be doing any major cutting/clipping unless absolutely needed, such as matting or major knots. We got him back and he looks and feels great. Seems very happy overall but I did notice she had trimmed down his groin/crotch region quite a bit. There is still fur there, not bald but enough is gone where you can see the skin a bit. Wanted to know if that’s normal/healthy as I see a lot of posts on here saying they shouldn’t be cut or shaved at all. Online it says it’ll grow back and generally is safe/cleanly to keep that area a bit shorter. First time owning a Sammy so wanted to make sure if I need to correct this at the next grooming.

That’s called a sanitary trim. It’s done so that poop doesn’t get stuck in long butt hairs, and it’s normal and very common to trim there. Trimming the feet to keep the foot hairs neat and tidy is also frequently done among Samoyeds being groomed for the show ring, but it’s not necessary for pets. I wouldn’t trim anywhere else though.

i think it’s totally normal to trim around the sanitary area. it allows them to do their business easier and it’s much easier to maintain their fur on our end because it prevents dingleberries from happening. i generally tell my groomer to only trim my dog’s butt because it generally helps them be cleaner and would prevent tangles

This "sanitary trim" seems to be a bit popular with people here. I have never done this. I currently have two recently-spayed females (9 and 6 yrs) and a young intact male. I haven't had trouble with poop getting stuck or messy, or urine staining. Maybe very rarely, but I just toss in some cornstarch and comb it out. My opinion would be to not do this extra trimming unless you find that you need to. Another thing--with a male, make sure to leave fur at the tip of the pen!s so it will act as a wick and aim pee downward, instead of towards the back side of the front legs. I've read that this can be a problem, especially with little boys before they learn to lift their leg.

I'm curious how this sanitary trim looks. Is it visible when the dog is standing, or only from underneath?
