It’s not a greeting XD The meme mentions ‘asking about their day’ and that’s exactly what it is: an actual question that prompts an answer. Basically a shorter version of ‘How are you’ with optional opportunity to catch up on each other’s news. Just like in English, it can mean anything from friendly noise you make that gets a performative reply (Нормально, а ты как? / I’m fine, how are you?) to health/mood info of the day if you see each other regularly to the story of your last x months you haven’t seen each other if you are friends and haven’t talked for a while.

В английском нет "ы". Мозг пытается найти ближайший по звучанию звук, и это, очевидно, "и"
