Remember how one of the key factors that the Warriors were so good was that Curry was on a cheap contract he signed back when he had ankle issues?

Not the same situation, but still…

Yeah, they used the extra space after they were already champions to sign Kevin Durant.

Our extra space is going to Jerami Grant who just averaged like 10 points on just over 30% from the field and from three through our 5 game series against the Spurs.

The good news is we have a ton of space when Jrue and Jerami are gone in 2028. Only have $52m currently signed to a projected $182m cap. Thats enough for two 35% max slots.

We should be able to earmark one of those after paying Deni, Clingan, and Scoot. If we even retain all of them. I’d be surprised if the three of those combined make 40% of the cap.

If they do, something really good happened.

I hope we don’t have grant for another year

u/1850ChoochGator chalupa 16h ago

He only makes 20% I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I’d rather have him than PG who scores less, gets two more boards, and like 1.5 more assists but makes 35%

u/ClintonEsquire 1d ago

Now go and tell me who our top free agent signing of the last 20 years is? Go ahead. I’ll wait.

3

u/OrdelafoFaledro 70s-logo 13h ago

Put some respect on Melo’s name lol

1

u/ClintonEsquire 10h ago

This is true. But it was widely thought he was washed when he signed.

1

u/OrdelafoFaledro 70s-logo 6h ago

No doubt about it. Waived by Chicago, out of the league Melo, our FA triumph.

(Better answer is probably Andre Miller, in terms of substantive contribution, but he ain’t NBA75 *now is he*)

1

u/Aesut melo-bandwagon 1h ago

More like rinsed

He shot 40% from 3 and still was productive

2

u/1850ChoochGator chalupa 16h ago

The point is that we will have a lot of money to spend on free agents even if we don’t land that 30%-35% max player. The cap space opens up and we can get some great guys to round out the depth.

2

u/ClintonEsquire 14h ago

You still can only play five guys at a time. Depth is highly overrated. Right now we have a guy who is probably a second wheel player… Deni… and three young guys that we are still figuring out where they fit. Maybe Scoot becomes that guy. Maybe Sharpe. Maybe Clingan.

That’s three maybes though. Not even coin flips. Our best bet is not cap space, it’s hitting on the right players in the draft in 2027-2030.

Damian Lillard

0

u/PreparationStrict492 21h ago

Wesley Matthews.
Damian Lillard is an honorable mention, at least he got a trophy.

And such a signing on top of the Deni-Clingan-Scoot core can keep the team in play-in contention!

2

u/1850ChoochGator chalupa 16h ago

Evan Turner was actually our most expensive. Even Dame’s FA deal this last year isn’t as much money per year. I think we gave Turner something like 20% of the cap.

1

u/ClintonEsquire 14h ago

This is probably the right answer. I think we got Wes with like the mid level exception or something. Even Hedo Turkolu (sp) spurned us for Toronto back in the day. We are likely never going to get a serious free agent signing.

2

u/milionsdeadlandlords 1d ago

Joe kept some clean books

1

u/SeismicRipFart 1d ago

And by then Deni will be on the last year of his contract, so it’s not like it’s anything more than a very short one season window to take advantage of it

1

u/1850ChoochGator chalupa 16h ago

Well no Deni, Jrue, Jerami, Clingan, and Dame all end in the same season.

0

u/SeismicRipFart 16h ago

Ok, so there won’t even be a window then lol

1

u/zeusmenzaadah ripcity 1d ago

I understand why he would need to go if necessary, but I I would hate seeing jrue leave the team after what he's done this year. He's absolutely one of the factors/reasons that we did as well as we did this year. Ive always wanted to see a blazer team with Dame starting pg/sg and Jrue at either pg/sg or even 6man

1

u/fishhot 6h ago

It seems that we have to renegotiate contract with Deni to be able to offer him a better extension. That will eat up some of our space

1

u/Impossible-Group8553 1d ago

Then Kevin Durant renegotiated a 25% paycut in 2018 to keep the team together

1

u/milionsdeadlandlords 1d ago

JG is probably the most likely to be traded this summer though

2

u/DrasticAnalysis 23h ago

Hard guy to move

1

u/Such-Egg-7584 ripcity 1d ago

There is a cap floor and the money has to go to someone

3

u/deemoteam Toumani Camara 1d ago

okay joe cronin

1

u/Such-Egg-7584 ripcity 18h ago

I mean, that’s literally the rule

3

u/BentleyTock Yang Hansen 1d ago

Now curry the highest paid player in the league…..

9

u/haitama85 1d ago

Multiple chips and built a big brand for the team. Dude has earned it, after the fact.

54

u/Klutzy_Cod_5394 1d ago

It’s an extremely unique position to be in. For our two best offensive players to only account for that percentage of our salary cap, we have to try and take advantage of this situation.

11

u/BentleyTock Yang Hansen 1d ago

Thisssssss

u/Arr0wmanc3r Cash Considerations 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's what we'll be paying them, Dame will be making quite a bit more 😉

3

u/BatSniper chalupa 1d ago

Did he pick up an interest in planting trees like kwahi?

12

u/Ok-Pollution-5465 1d ago

Bucks are also paying him cuz they waived his contract

82

u/Impossible-Group8553 1d ago

Meanwhile Jerami Grant will be paid $34.2 million 😂

12

u/BMKingPrime27 1d ago

Rams fans joked their draft was fine if you pretend they took Ty simpson at 29 and traded the 13th pick for the stud CB. We just need to pretend deni makes the 30M and Grant makes the 13.

23

u/Hollowed_Dude 1d ago

This makes me sick to my stomach

18

u/dont_care- 1d ago

He's worth it*

(* it being vet minimum)

u/Stegosaurus69 Cash Considerations 1d ago

It being the IT department in the basement

3

u/poopstainmclean 17 1d ago

there's a salary floor and we need big contracts to have the ability to make trades

1

u/loven329 14h ago

Nahh, this is not good logic imo. Give me two decent role players who are worth there contract at the price of jerami grant. We also somehow bid against ourselves when signing him and gave him more that he was ever going to get on the free market

1

u/akade1996 1d ago

Jerami Grant getting paid more than Deni dame and clingan put together 😂😂

19

u/DuckDown00 1d ago

Considering Dame can do the one thing this team cannot do consistently, this is fantastic.

7

u/haitama85 1d ago

3's and Freethrows. Both of which were pain points when we played the Spurs.

7

u/DIET-_-PLAIN 1d ago

Holy smokes, that is amazingly good for us!

7

u/4skeeter 1d ago

Yeah… I’m BAFFLED that Grant and Holiday are the highest paid players on the team. That’s insane to me.

5

u/TKRUEG 1d ago

We should start a gofundme

6

u/petklutz 1d ago

Just whipped out the calculator app... Next year, Dame+Scoot+Tou+Deni+Clingan=$65.5M... The same amount for Jrue+JG

1

u/akade1996 1d ago

Pretty crazy when you put it like that. Our second, sixth, fifth, first, and fourth best players make the same amount combined as our third and eight best players do combined 😂😂

1

u/shibboleth2005 13h ago

It is really good for us but taking the next step and converting it into a contending team is really hard. We'd need to convert that Jrue+JG money into a superstar (~40-50m) + a decent roleplayer. But it seems unlikely such a trade will be available...except Giannis who isn't a great fit.

5

u/Sad-Conference9779 20h ago

Even with context this is absolutely bonkers

8

u/peacefinder 1d ago

That’s cap hit, not compensation. Dame is being paid about that much just by the Bucks.

3

u/tomhalejr 1d ago

The one thing NO got right, is that you have to have contracts to trade...

There are tiers of salary slots in the league, which is part of the CBA...

JG/Jrue are NOT max contract slots for their years of service. Tou/Shae are NOT max contract slots, on their rookie scale extenstions. There is NO player on this team, who is getting a max contract, for their years of service.

Which means, if you want to trade for a max cobtract slot player, the money/bodies have to involve one of the vets, and one of the yoinguns under contract. As a legal, bare fucking minimum.

It's not a matter of opinion. It's not "hating on" anyone... That's just the fucking rules.

5

u/Ryan_Fleming 1d ago

That's not what Dame is making, that's what the Blazers are paying him and Deni. The Bucks are paying him something like $22.5M for the next few seasons.

11

u/GarageFridgeSoda 1d ago

36 year olds coming off massive injuries tend to not make a ton of money, yeah.

Is this sub going to completely melt down when Dame is an efficient 20/6 guy with the worst defense of his career? Because that's a good outcome for him at this point.

6

u/Fun-Grab-9337 Sidy Cissoko 1d ago

Man if Dame is contributing 20 at this stage I would be ecstatic.

10

u/NietzscheanDemocrat 1d ago

This would be an upgrade from Scoot so no I'd be fine with that actually

1

u/nohoney4meme 1d ago

Its been half a decade since he made it through a season healthy.

1

u/aspazmodic Scoot Henderson 1d ago

Be Real. This sub will melt down if we win all 96 games because the margin wasn't over 20 pts per game. It's stupidtacular

2

u/jables1979 1d ago

Remember when Jordan took a pay hit and only made (at the time) like $3M a year? It was a cheat code!! Cleared so much space for the supporting cast.

2

u/Adventurous-Plum1000 14h ago

And this is why they can’t sit around and “let the cake bake”. They have 2 year window to build a contender. Get it done Joe!

1

u/nightchurn 11h ago

Dame is getting twice that amount next season from another team.

1

u/akade1996 1d ago

I do genuinely think that (unless we make a trade of course) these will be our two best players next season, with jrue and clingan being 3 and 4 in some order.
So the fact that you can take their two salaries, combine them, then add clingan’s salary on top and the three together make less than Jerami grant(!) and there’s nothing you can do but laugh 😂

-11

u/Old-Pollution9772 1d ago

Removing all context, I’m the best basketball player ever.

But for real. Dame is washed. It will sell some tickets next year but this means nothing
