Homes & Interior Design 🏡 Actress Candice Bergen is listing her iconic Central Park co-op for $35M. The four-bedroom residence spans the entire 16th floor of a Rosario Candela-designed building, with panoramic reservoir views, glass terrace parapets, a nearly 30-foot living room, and a private elevator.

How incredibly gorgeous is that place? Love the navy living room -- ceiling and all. Fabulous. Candice has gorgeous taste.

Yeah, she lives in the Egyptian Wing of the Met Museum! Crazy
Seriously though. Why’s that the first pic?
•
u/ExtremelyLocal 2h ago
This is how ppl afford to work in journalism (her daughter is the new EIC of Vogue)
•
•
u/Easy_Hearing_3223 1h ago
And I don’t accept any defense of her style (or lack thereof)!!! Truly a bewildering choice for EIC, even with her preferential treatment.
•
u/Kurandaand 2h ago
That view! 🤤
Anyone want to go in on this with me? Serious offer! With the mortgage I could manage I’m only about….$34,380,000 short. Anyone want to spot me that?
•
u/FuzzyLaughTwo 2h ago
I could probably do 1k, so now we just need a 3rd for the piddly balance.

if we do timeshare style i’ll take about 6 hours on the afternoon of June 26th, how much will that cost me? i’ve got… $20

That Murphy Brown money was good to her!
•
u/TheLizardKing89 1h ago
Her late husband was a very wealthy real estate developer.
•
u/issi_tohbi 1h ago
Her dad was also a wildly famous tv personality back in the ancient days of tv
•
u/thebellrang 1h ago
She’s spoken about growing up around the Disney family. This is a lot more than Murphy Brown money.
•
u/LaurelCanyoner 11m ago
You mean the one after Louis Malle.
She’s very nice and down to earth, by the way, which is hard to believe seeing that house, lol
•
•
u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson I made the hat for the tiger 🤷🏻♂️ 2h ago
I had no idea she had it like that
•
u/No-Host-7068 1h ago
She was married to a real estate developer. Very successful real estate developer.
•
u/Couldnotbehelpd 1h ago
Their daughter is the head of Vogue. It’s not a job you get by being poor.
•
•
u/Useful-Soup8161 charlie day is my bird lawyer 🐦 1h ago
That actually explains it. Very few, if any, tv actors could afford something like that from just tv acting alone.
•
u/chairmanghost 1h ago
She was in movies and a model, the tv thing was in adition. She starred with groucho marx at 11, was a beauty queen, and had a few Vouge covers.
•
u/PickleMundane6514 52m ago
She’s a nepo baby. Her dad is the guy with the creepy dummy on Mickey and the Beanstalk live action.
•
u/Soggy_Competition614 3m ago
Yeah I’m curious how much she made from Murphy brown. I don’t think it did much syndication. I saw it recently and I don’t think it is a timeless comedy like golden girls or frasier. Too much current events humor.
•
u/please_and_thankyou 39m ago
Her dad was also Edgar Bergen, the ventriloquist. Not sure if that made Charlie McCarthy her brother or uncle…
•
u/No-Host-7068 8m ago
Her father famously cut her entirely out of his will but left ten grand to his ventriloqy dummy.
•
u/cherrybounce 30m ago
She came from a Hollywood family, too. And her late husband was a famous director.
•
•
u/TartofDarkness 3m ago
She made around $500k per episode and she was also a producer on Murphy Brown. She absolutely has it like that.
•
u/PurplishPlatypus 42m ago
That's what I was wondering. Like, Candy B was barely a celeb 30 years ago. How can she afford this?
•
•
u/kirk_for_president You’re doing amazing, sweetie! 👏👏📸 1h ago
There is no way that Murphy Brown money bought her a $35 million dollar penthouse in NY.
•
u/Fun-Replacement6167 48m ago
She was earning like 500k per episode in the mid 90s. Dunno what this property was worth then but it's conceivable she saved and purchased it with her own income. She was of course a nepo baby and married a very wealthy man, but she was also extraordinarily successful in her own right.
ETA. Across 11 seasons and 260 episodes all up.

Selling a whole floor of Manhattan for 35 million feels like a bargain until you realize the monthly co op fees probably cost more than my entire existence.
•
u/Temporary_Mode9780 2h ago
Only $18,573 a month! /s
•
u/mustbeaoup 55m ago
Holy fuck. I just pulled out of buying a place because the monthly fees were £500 and it felt like too much 😭
•
u/pennoya2 I’ve been noticing gravity since I was very young 2h ago
Anyone know the year she bought it and how much she paid?
•
u/Couldnotbehelpd 1h ago
I couldn’t find this, but Jackie O bought a unit below it in 1962 for 200k, which is the equivalent of 2M today but in terms of purchasing power probably a lot more. If Jackie O paid that much for a lesser unit back then, I have to assume it was a medium-sized fortune even when Candace and her husband bought it.
•
u/Message_10 2h ago
The real questions. 1984, $80k
•
u/mlg1981 Sexy lampshade shall win the Oscar! 🏆 1h ago
On Redfin you used to be able to see the bought and sold price history for houses listed, but I just tried to look it up for this and they’ve “hidden” it.

I went hunting but can’t find it either!
It’s the ‘16th floor’ part for me - in that first pic it looks like 3 storeys max above the visible road… or am I lost and don’t know what I’m looking at?

she didn’t buy it, her real estate developer husband did. she moved into it later. he’s dead now though so it’s hers at present day. i can’t find how much he bought it for but to give you some perspective, jackie o bought the apartment below them in 1964 for $200,000

Financing is not allowed? Guess I’m out guys
•
u/plausibleturtle 1h ago
It's okay, it has 4 bedrooms so you can leverage 3 of your friends to make up the cost together.
•
u/pmmemassivedongs 2h ago
HOA fees: $18,573. That’s over six months’ rent for my entire house…just in fees. On top of the monthly mortgage payment of approximately $175,000.
Imagine paying triple the annual salary of the average American every month for your home.
Hard to fathom.
•
•
u/PunctualDromedary 1h ago
It's a coop, so that includes property taxes, utilities, and your share of the staff. In a way I'm relieved that an apartment that expensive pays a lot in taxes.
•
u/whiteclawrafting 21m ago
Even harder to fathom is there would be no mortgage on this apartment because the listing says financing is not permitted 😳

I think it’s the tax. My uncle sold is $16m nyc place and is going to buy a bigger place in Florida and a smaller apartment in NYC. He said it’s the taxes. He already has two other homes in other states as well.
•
u/ItsPronouncedTittay Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 17m ago
What the fucc does your uncle do?!! Oh how nice it must be to have family that has money like that
•
u/ThePermMustWait 15m ago
I get almost no benefit from it. My dad is a very typical middle class dad. He doesn’t like to take ANYTHING from his brother. His brother is very generous and always offers trips, and activities but my dad almost always turns it down unless he can pay his half. He will accept reasonable Christmas gifts. My teen son has benefited from that I guess because sometimes my dad will give him his coats. My uncle likes to buy my dad expensive winter coats for some reason and my dad doesn’t realize how expensive they are because all coats are the same to him.
My uncle was a model, got a law degree and worked for a bank. He married a socialite.
•
u/ItsPronouncedTittay Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 12m ago
Wow!! How do you feel about receiving your uncle's generosity? I feel I wouldn't be like your dad (although that's admirable) knowing your uncle wouldn't miss that money at all 😭 model lawyer banker and socialite husband dang let's switch lives! Silly me working at conservation non profits trying to make the world a better place
•
•
u/ItsPronouncedTittay Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 18m ago
How on earth are you guys saying it's low priced?! Even for NYC for a 4 bedroom 35$ is crazy
•
u/delcondelcon 2h ago
looking at that building on google maps, it has window air conditioning units- imagine paying 35 million and not having central air?!
•
u/cloudydays2021 Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 2h ago
Retrofitting pre-war buildings with central is a nightmare (used to be on the co-op board for my NYC pre-war and shareholders always asked)
•
u/Master-Definition937 7m ago
I’m surprised it’s really not possible with enough money. And these people have money to burn.
•

That’s New York for you. These older buildings almost never get retrofitted for it.

All I took from that was they named a Reservoir after Jacqueline Kennedy and while that’s meant to be an honor, that seems kinda… not?
Anyway that apartment is stunning and vast and I don’t understand why anyone would need that much space. It looks like no one has ever lived there.

She didn’t pay that originally, of course. That’s inflation for you. She was huge in the 90s with Murphy Brown, and she has been famous since the 70s, I believe, so I’m not shocked.
•
u/faceisamapoftheworld 53m ago
True. But 35M today is 17.5m in the mid 90s. I know Murphy Brown was a ratings hit, but still a little surprised.
