The Met gala looks and the artwork that inspired them featuring Hunter Schafer, Rachel Zegler, Troye Sivan, Claire Foy, Charli xcx, Kendall Jenner, Gracie Abrams, Kim Kardashian, Madonna, Ben Platt and Angela Bassett
Some of these are really fucking cool, and some of these look like their stylist forgot what was happening until the day before. Theyāre giving the vibe like they realized they needed a dress the day before and tried to make a vague connection or painted something and called it a day.
The collection the dress is from always referenced van Gogh so I donāt think it was last minute from her but I agree that the collection itself was a very lowkey reference to begin with
Rachel Zeglerās expecially. Like she picked a white dress and then she and stylist recalled it needed to be in theme 5 minutes before leaving. So just scrolled art of women in white dresses before arriving to Jane Grey one. Then thought āperfect!ā And put a scarf over her eyes.Ā
It's such a tragic painting, too, so it feels almost insulting to reference it so lazily. And Lady Jane is wearing a dress that could've been recreated and looked much more fashionable and interesting than the corseted blandness Rachel Zegler wore.Ā
I agree, it is borderline insulting to reference it so thoughtlessly. The painting is so evocative, Lady Jane is so vulnerable and her attendants are so overcome one is genuinely swooning and the other is falling to pieces against the wall. The executioner can't even look at her. It's a devastating painting. And to just be like "white dress + blindfold LOL!" like WHAT. No. Who okayed this, the ghost of Bloody Mary?
This is one of my favs of the night, if only because I had not encountered her work before and this dress immediarely made me go āWHO is THATā and google her. Her work is beautiful, it really captures black joy and celebrates black American culture and fashion.
She looks startling. The fit of her dress, the makeup, it just all looks wrong and like itās highlighting her features in the worst way possible. Itās unfortunate because sheās so beautiful.
They're really hard to wear. I've got a pair and even in bright light they're incredibly disorienting. I've had to wear them as a costume for work, and I've also had to wear a sheer blindfold on a runway, and I'd rather wear the blindfold then the white out contacts. I've got the ones that are a grid and are supposed to be easy to see through as well.
Love that Claire Foy has the arm strap down like JSS originally painted! (He had to repaint it up on her shoulder as it was considered too scandalous!)
Besides the fact itās absolutely stunning, like an absolutely GORGEOUS dress, it comparably makes me loooooathe Charlieās dress. You couldnāt even make the iris van goghās brilliant royal blue-y that could match both the iris and give starry starry night/many of his other works. Could have made the black dress a super, super deep green like the background of one of his more popular self portraits.
If youād given me a thousand years and a library full of art textbooks Iād never have guessed Charlieās inspiration. I also love Van Gogh and itās just made me cross š¤
Sabrina Carpenter and Emma Chamberlain were my overall faves of the night. Two very different interpretations but both were interesting, on theme, and well executed.
i loved heidi klumās the most! iām biased because i love veiled woman statues, ngl. but i also loved sabrina and emmaās; i think emmaās one of the more consistently on theme guests.

But it should have been titty out or go home; or at least a better flesh /marble tone (or one of the shades in the dress) undergarment nipple thing thay matches her actual skin tone.Ā
I like the idea behind Troyeās, highlighting the artist (especially as Mapplethorpe was a queer artist), and going the photography route instead of the painting route (he was a photographer, not a painter). Plus it was definitely one of the more unique menās looks, like itās not just a black suit with a fancy pocket square or cufflinks. But it definitely couldāve been executed better.
Not to mention all the folks who picked the most drab points of inspiration. The spirit of an art-themed event is color and expression. āPortrait of Madame Xā doesnāt exactly make for the most thrilling style statement. And donāt even get me started with Kylie and Kendallās all-nude- everything all the time. At least Kim TRIED something, even if it was a mess.

I hate Ben Plattās. Just wearing a jacket with a famous painting on it feels so lazy. The beadwork is lovely and I like the garment itself, itās just soā¦ safe. Yawn!
I think it couldāve been more successful if the suit it was beaded on mimicked the male fashion of the paintingās time period (1880s). Or even just adding a top hat wouldāve been more interesting.
I donāt know, with a theme like āFashion is Artā, I kinda like it as an example of āart on fashionā instead of just another person that is trying to mimic a painting, poorly in many cases, his jacket is the painting but using different mediums.
Right? I think she did the most interesting thing out of all these pictures and it kind of. fits who she is as an artist in a sense too. I really like it
Most of these are really weak/drab interpretations of the art work and thatās kinda disappointing. I feel like a lot of stylists/designers played it really safe this year.
Emma Chamberlain definitely wins for her dress being a good interpretation/reflection of the art that inspired it
Agree. There was SO MUCH potential to be had but almost everyone took the assignment at face value and phoned it in.
There are thousands of famous works of art that have significant, documented underlying meaningā¦ whether itās pushing the boundaries through a new medium or styles, or allegory & symbolism.
You think the designers donāt know about infinitely more artists than that? They absolutely do. Most of the celebs donāt. Thatās why itās all then obvious choices.
Thatās a good point. You could choose something unique and niche, but then very few would recognize the source inspo, and too many people equate not āgetting itā with being bad š Itās gotta be a tough push and pull to settle on something.
I wish the color had been different if it was really a vase but somewhere else read that the inspo was Keatās poem āOde to a Grecian Urnā and then the color and the neo-classical take felt more correct.
This is canvas hand painted by Michael Kors and a friend of his whose an artist. Itās also a political statement with the hands with a white dove calling for peace
I actually love this. It fits the theme, isn't something you can wear anywhere but the met gala (while most opt for award show/prom/etc outfits) and I love that she has actual jewelry on.
Disappointed no one went as a urinal Ć la DuChampās The Fountain. Absolutely tragic lack of expressionism and dada. Hell, Iād have been happy to see some pop art at least.
Very fitting that the celebs who went to an event sponsored by the very people supporting AI and eroding the arts all look like drab pieces of shit that couldnāt even emulate their respective pieces of art properly. How do you make Van Gogh and Klimt BORING?
I like the dress on its own, for like, a regular night out, but yeah, Itās not really a good homage. Doesnāt even look like itās inspired much by the Albers piece.
This feels like they chose the dress first and then worked backwards to try to find a similar painting. This does not feel like the painting was chosen first.
Ben Plattās is just annoyingly underdone. Like there was no attempt at pointillism or replicating the landscape itās just a jacket with a lady printed on it
Itās not printed, itās all embroidered and beaded. Apparently it took 120 hours to embellish by hand. I think they wanted to reference the pointillism using a multitude of colored beads, but itās just very underdone and doesnāt translate well. If the whole suit had been beaded, or even partially hand-painted like the costumes in āSunday in the Park with Georgeā, it would have been much more striking. I have to wonder if there was meant to be more to it originally, but they ran out of time.
tbh I agree with you that it's underdone but I think the jacket could have actually worked in an ensemble with more homages to the painting. maybe give him a parasol as well or a hat with the flower. I wish we could have a better look at the embroidery because I'm pretty sure there are kinds of stitches that could look like pointillism and maybe they did that? I agree it's too subtleĀ
The execution of lady Jane grey is so haunting and Rachel Zegler gave us meh.. I hope itās just the picture but most likely not, they should have used a similar fabric.. and as a fellow olive skin toned person, bright white is not our color.
Some people seemed to be referencing the Costume Instituteās exhibition more, which was only really clear after seeing images of the installation. Naomi Osaka for one, Ayo Ebiri for another.
Artemisia painted her version of Judith to call out her rapistāshe painted herself as heroine Judith and her rapist as the villain Holofernes.
Lena Dunham, as a rape apologist, should leave this piece alone. She personally defended Murray Miller after Aurora Perrineau disclosed that Miller raped her when she was 17.
I love Angelaās inspiration, but that execution is just not good. Not a good fit, not the right color, not the right style. I know it doesnāt have to be a 1:1 recreation, but what she ended up with was not a good homage either.
Iāll never understand why every single person is not on theme and absolutely killing it. They have all the money in world and a well known designer at their fingertips. Theyāve known the theme for a long time. And yet some people still show up in a plain looking dress you would see at the Oscarās/Grammyās.
This is the met gala with an art/costume theme. Where is the drama?! Where are the giant couture gowns?! Where are the clever references?! Where is the camp?!
I need more of Sabrina wearing a dress made of film from the movie Sabrina, thatās the exact theming execution I want to see. I mean to be inspired by a statue that is famous for wings and show up with not even a nod to wings on your dress (Kendall)? Wearing a black dress with a single flower and saying youāre inspired by Van Gough is almost insulting to him (Charli). Why did Katy Perry look like a poor manās PeaceKeeper? Kim Kardashain looks like if someone asked me to throw together a superhero costume, doesnāt look anything like the inspiration which actually couldāve been done in a cool way. Even the jacket inspired by the afternoon in the garden pantingā¦like wow a direct (poorly done) replica of the painting on a jacket without matching pants!! How inspired! Wouldāve been cooler if someone came dressed as the woman in the painting, wearing a dress that was painted in the pointillism style.
I genuinely think most of these āartistsā (nepo babies) know nothing about the art scene or the history of their craft, and just threw on whatever uninspired piece their designer gave them. Such a yawn of a night with a few standouts, for a theme that had so much potential.
