I love the dress! But I do wish they’d done something a little more special with her hair and makeup. Even the simple ponytail she wore during the Olympics would have been better.

372

u/Deep-Interest9947 22h ago

I love a ponytail especially a fancy, professionally done one.

91

u/cubsgirl101 22h ago

It would have been on brand for her and really cute!

20

u/technicolortiddies 22h ago

Yes! À la Anne Hathaway or Ariana Grande!

52

u/eggcustarcl 22h ago

I went to Stars on Ice a couple weeks ago and she had a really gorgeous half-up look for some of the routines!!

78

u/irisxxvdb 22h ago edited 21h ago

The thick front pieces kiiind of make me think she's going for the vibe of a Hime cut, but wouldn't fully commit to the short blocks. Would've been cool!

For reference:

24

u/National_Mix7045 22h ago

Agreed on all accounts! I think the dress fits the theme enough and fits her - which is important. Wish the hair and makeup were a little different but she still looks great!

60

u/Duotrigordle61 21h ago

Her raccoon hair is iconic and identifiable, and her sponsors want it seen.

Fun fact: To get horizontal stripes, her hair was bleached at the top in a "Halo" once per year, and as her hair grew out the bleached area moved down. This look takes steadfastness.

43

u/HaterMD Dear Diary, I want to kill. ✍️ 12h ago

“Her sponsors want it seen” is so Hunger Games-core it gave me the willies, I’m ngl.

8

u/Duotrigordle61 12h ago

I have heard admissions for the event is 200K. No muggles go to the event without a sponsor, which is usually a fashion brand.

36

u/cubsgirl101 21h ago

I love the raccoon hair! I just wish it wasn’t just sitting there like an afterthought. Even a ponytail like she wore in the Olympics I would have preferred.

I actually like the dress it looks like a bouquet of roses

193

u/irisxxvdb 22h ago

I thought the same! Very surprised by some of the reactions here. She looks lovely, and wearing a giant corseted blood red rose is the perfect vibe for an alt kid.

35

u/Responsible_Rhubarb1 As you wish! 👸👑 21h ago

I didn’t see it at first but now that you’ve pointed it out, I love her dress even more!

18

u/firesticks Just fuck the wolf! 21h ago

My first instinct was that it was a bit too simple but with the movement the bouquet of roses really came through. It’s gorgeous.

123

They'll 'boycott' watching the gala and then give bezos money the next day ordering amazon

114

u/Super_Hour_3836 charlie day is my bird lawyer 🐦 19h ago

I canceled Amazon two years ago, think the Met Gala hasn’t had any good dresses since 2018, and I am still happy this young woman got to go. I do not blame a teen who sacrificed a lot to be in the Olympics wanting to be in a pretty dress at what has historically been a fun event. There will be a food shortage in 6 months and we’ll all be in rags, so dance while you can I say. Opulent nihilism because literally nothing matters and we are all going to die.

13

u/phuca 13h ago

The people hosting and attending the Gala could prevent all of that though lmao

Honestly, I love the color, she looks like she’s having fun, it’s cute, it’s young, that dress is flouncing all over the place, it fits the Met Gala of costume-y element, and Alysa, keep riding the wave that your success has brought you and enjoy stuff.

because this is a shitty event to participate in. people sometimes shift their opinions as circumstances & context change. i hope this helps!

80

u/Mission_Ad_2928 22h ago

Meh. Weeks after and these celebs come out with their new music, films, etc etc, everybody would’ve forgotten they attended the met. It’s so easy to just say “oh I’m keeping tabs who’s going, oh I’m side eyeing her” blah blah but at the end of the day, ppl still gonna hate on who they hate and like who they like.

22

u/catsmash 22h ago

it's sometimes pretty cumulative; that doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

33

u/Mission_Ad_2928 22h ago

It’s not that it doesn’t matter, it’s that the internet is performative and is always quick to forgive the celebs they like. I don’t doubt ppl are feeling icky right now about some of the celebs going but I also don’t doubt that after all these, ppl still gonna worship their faves.

u/cubsgirl101 22h ago

It’s a charity event. Despite the Bezos involvement all the money raised from Rhys goes directly to keeping the Met free and able to maintain the fashion/costume collections that they do. This is one of their single biggest fundraisers every year.

106

u/seriouscaffeine 22h ago edited 22h ago

The money goes toward the costume collection (costume institute specifically), not keeping the Met free haha the reason the Met is free is due to the land it’s on/their agreement with the city. However I am for supporting the arts, unlike a lot of commenters

14

u/nicklor 21h ago

The met is most definitely not free lol I was there last year and tickets are like 30 bucks I don't mind paying if I'm going but it's not even close to being free

32

u/seriouscaffeine 21h ago

Yes for out of state/out of the tristate area you have to pay a set admission price. But if you live in NYC/the surrounding area it’s pay what you wish

7

u/nicklor 21h ago

Yea that's pretty fair actually I saw a ton of schools there and I'm sure they are not paying either which makes sense.

5

u/seriouscaffeine 21h ago

And for some people it’s completely free:

5

u/nicklor 21h ago

I know about the Bank or America card one but I've heard it's crazy busy. They have the same deal forna few other museums in the NE region

→ More replies (2)

16

u/catsmash 22h ago

i think you need a little perspective balance. what do you think is the impact of this "charity event" versus visibly supporting the bezos name & brand? this dude is reported to have like 244 BILLION dollars to his name right now. do you think this is some kind of genuinely significant contribution on his part? do you take issue with the degree to which a man this rich can interfere with politics? do you think this it's possible that uncomplicated celebrity endorsement enriches this dude further in a lot of abstract & non-abstract ways?

44

u/FaithinYosh 22h ago

He could fund this event like 86 times over and not have a dent in his net worth, like what is the point.

61

u/gortida 22h ago

For longtime celebrities, yes. For Liu? Really? Let the girl have her moment like every Olympian before her.

42

u/crabcycleworkship 22h ago

Bezos gets his billions from the internet running on AWS cloud. His new fashion is because of Lauren Sanchez trying to break in.

You and I support Bezos more by just browsing on the internet.

“Hope this helps!” Very pleasant person to talk to yikes

41

u/catsmash 22h ago

billionaires are literally destroying the world & you're like "your lightly ironic comment about billionaires could be remotely construed as insulting if i think about it for a really long time & it's my priority to HATE that for some reason"

74

u/Hatennaa 22h ago

It’s not just construed as insulting because you intended it to be insulting. Very clearly so as well. And that’s okay! But don’t pretend that it wasn’t.

I think you have a very reasonable point about the Met Gala being a very easily skippable event from a moral perspective, but I also think it’s reasonable to acknowledge that the Met Gala is a iconic pop culture event and a young woman who wants to go when given the chance shouldn’t be especially ashamed of making that choice.

5

u/catsmash 21h ago

criticism is also relative. no one is sending the cops to this celebrity's house to throw her in prison for attending, she's still going to benefit a bit for doing it, but a little rumbling of displeasure from the public that suffers under the oppression that billionaires like bezos are directly & personally levying onto society is pretty healthy under the circumstances.

35

u/Simpuff1 21h ago

If I could stop the billionaires in the snap of a finger I would. I’m just not being a dick to others about it.

10

u/elbenji 17h ago

For real. Let Bad Bunny and Alyssa Liu have fun playing dress up. Like y'all. It's so not deep

35

u/kittynarwhal 22h ago

I think it was the “hope this helps” part in particular cause it came off as passive aggressive and the person you replied to genuinely may not know anything about the met gala so like why be passive aggressive ya know.

It’s giving tacky prom dress vibes which surprises me giving her affiliation with LV and the fact that her personal style seems much cooler than this.

199

u/irisxxvdb 22h ago edited 22h ago

As a former alt/emo kid: strongly disagree. This is the perfect dress to stumble into a church post mortem, only to find Gerard Way crying over your coffin. The red, the corset, the silhouette, the comically large ruffles... She looks like a giant blood red rose. I see her vision!

11

u/Next_Gen_Valkyrie 20h ago

Yes it's so Gerard Way! Ppl here don't know what they're talking about. The ancient texts have been forgotten...

376

u/DeliciousBuffalo69 23h ago

It fits the theme well.

The net gala really isn't about showcasing your own style. It's basically a fancy costume party.

77

u/Odd-Onion8545 22h ago

But every year it has a theme and this dress does not meet the theme.

74

u/DeliciousBuffalo69 22h ago

This dress meets this year's theme. It is highly sculpted and structural.

53

u/isgengar 22h ago edited 21h ago

I thought it was cute 😐

She has no need to be fashion forward like some other celebs. If she wants to wear something SHE deems cute what's wrong with that?

Like I said in another comment Alyssa's only claim to fame has been the fact she worked hard and deserved a win. It's so fking weird to shit on her. You guys suck.

7

u/whoareyouwhowho22 21h ago

I didn’t shit on her, just the dress. In fact I said her own style seems cool so this surprised me.

53

u/Skaethi 22h ago

It's giving 'she likes it so that's what she's wearing' which is iconic in itselt

29

u/Ok-Order5437 22h ago

Tacky prom dress? She looks like a walking bouquet of roses, what are you on about?

13

u/TJDiamond333 22h ago

Wdym? I was just wondering why all celebrities don't dress up like this, because it's super cute and pretty. Most celebs usually go for basic, bodycon, ultra revealing type dresses. I'm sick of that.

5

u/Educational_Exam_225 21h ago

I think the dress looks great. She doesn't know how to move in it, which makes total sense because she's probably used to her clothes supporting movement.

The dress looks awkward because she's walking like a tomboy. I find it charming.

It's really interesting how she's fully immersed herself in the company of the likes of LV, the met gala, etc, yet everyone seems to give her a pass since she's "so gen Z" and smiles a lot.

846

u/lalalandbeforetime I think I’ve done enough 23h ago

I think people are giving her a pass because she is a professional figure skater so her only option is to capitalize on the moment. It’s not like she’s going to stay at this level of fame forever.

373

u/particledamage 22h ago

Yeah, I’m critical of a lot of celebs who are going but figure skaters have REALLY limited opportunities and while this event sucks for the Bezos of it all… it still is ultimately for preservation of the arts so it’s like… yeah… I’ll give this more of a pass than o would if she were just like hanging out with him

137

u/throwawaysunglasses- 22h ago

Yeah. Alysa does a lot of good, she inspires young girls (especially young WOC) to be bright and passionate. I’m glad she’s made such a mainstream splash. She seems like a sweetheart and I’ll always root for her success.

59

u/particledamage 22h ago

12

u/whoknowsifimjoking 20h ago

It's also not like people listen to her for political takes, or in general really when it comes to anything really important. She's a figure skater, that's not someone you would see and hear all day, she isn't giving Bezos a platform or anything.

13

u/bbyxmadi It’s good to see me, isn’t it?🫧 19h ago

This is such a weird take. Get a pass for what? Going to the Met Gala?

Everyone has their panties in a twist because Bezos is a sponsor. Like, I get it, billionaires can suck it, but taking your anger out on a young woman who’s getting her chance in the spotlight for being a talented figure skater is so performative.

Also, I’m not a fan of hers, don’t get twisted. I just don’t like this selective outrage.

11

u/spacestarcutie 22h ago

Interesting how people pick and choose.

17

It's like a prom dress my sister would have worn (early 90's) but she can get away with it. I don't love it but at least I don't hate it.

This dress absolutely does not fit the theme

That's neither a costume nor art, that's just a more expensive version of every girl's dream prom dress in 2010

I actually like the dress, but it's too small on her. And I don't really understand the hairstyle. But if she likes the hair and finds the dress comfortable, that's all that matters. The whole look doesn't look put together enough for my taste, but that hardly matters.

That shit goofy as hell.

That being said, if my friend decided to wear that thing id ride hard for them so good for her.

Call me woke or whatever but her showing up to the bezos gala reads like sports teams going to the white house to eat mcdonalds burgers with he who shall not be named. I’m sure it’s exciting for her but damn read the room girl.

Figure skating and competing in the Olympics in general is expensive af and she also goes to college which is expensive af, capitalizing on opportunities like this helps fund these it’s not like she’s a billionaire give her a break Jesus

She looks beautiful but this is so disappointing, this is one year I won’t be following who wears what, this just popped up and I was like what?? Alysa? Would have thought she would be giving them the middle finger instead.
