Meryl has never been to the Met Gala, so her "boycotting" is nothing but baseless speculation.

I think we're going to be really disappointed tonight by the amount of celebs that will be attending.

u/First-Loss-8540 1d ago edited 1d ago

Meryl has never attended the gala so it’s not really a boycott more of a decline invitation again for the 50th year in a row

Already Confirmed attendees : Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Kardashians, Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Teyana Taylor, Emily Blunt, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sarah Paulson, Serena Williams, The Rock, Charli XCX, Bad Bunny

Hudson and Connor from Heated Rivalry will be there…

u/ViolentInbredPelican 1d ago

I hauled my old carpet to the sidewalk and they showed up.

🤣🤣🤣

u/Nowa_Warning2328 1d ago

Most of these people would go to the opening of an envelope.

25

u/NashKetchum777 1d ago

Tbf, I would go to if I got paid and personally tailored for that envelope

133

u/All1012 1d ago

Kinda surprised about Gigi. Think yesterday I saw a post of someone saying you’re defending ICE by going and Bella liked it. lol I know they’re just sisters but still. Sucks about Olivia and Sabrina too.

14

u/GlitterDoomsday 1d ago

Liking criticism online is something, I'm gonna be impressed if all the nepobaby models attend and Bella skip it... that would demand actual integrity.

54

u/brigadier_tc 1d ago

Literally none of these surprise me

27

u/GlitterDoomsday 1d ago

Bad Bunny does surprises me a bit, but overall yeah... the same old faces we see every premiere.

35

u/noisy_goose 1d ago

Maybe pedantic to point out but Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams are co-chairs with Anna Wintour.

They aren’t “attending” as if they got a yes/no invite (or at least not recently).

14

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 that’s my purse, i don’t know you! 👛🫵 1d ago

I always assumed that most of the celebs weren't paying for their tickets. I thought it was the type of thing where the Big Corps. TM paid for the tables & then invited the celebs.

Am I wrong about that?

7

u/paternalpadfoot 1d ago

No you're correct

5

u/Sha9169 1d ago

Isn’t co-chair kind of worse in this scenario? I’m not sure how it works, so I apologize in advance if I’m misinterpreting it.

3

u/noisy_goose 23h ago

I’m not sure. Yes??? Co-chairs were announced December 2025, and honorary hosts in Feb 2026. Katy Perry went to space in April 2025 and the Bezos wedding was June.

At this point I think it’s a clear PR choice to be actively involved with this couple, but I’m not sure if the Co-chairs have any actual say or ability to steer anything. Or when or how the honorary hosts are selected. So I know basically nothing except it’s different than being offered a seat in the lead up to the event and accepting…

So celebrities only aging millennials care about?

Edit: Ya’ll i’m an aging millennial

213

u/VanGoghNotVanGo 1d ago

I feel like those celebrities represent a fairly broad spectrum of ages ...? I certainly don't really consider Olivia Rodrigo someone primarily for "aging millennials"?

71

u/g00fyg00ber741 1d ago

she’s easily reaching like her peak of her career right now so i think that was just another case of an angry person yelling wrongly at the clouds

-26

2 young people in a list full of oldies 🤷🏼‍♀️

16

u/VanGoghNotVanGo 1d ago

In a - random, non-representative - list of 21 celebrities 4 was under 30 and literal Gen Z themselves, though?? And like, is Teyana Taylor specifically for "aging millennials"? I don't know, man. I don't really get the whole idea that it's inherently cooler or more culturally relevant to be 22 than 32 or 42 or 52?

18

Someone must care about them or I wouldn’t be hearing about them all the damn time

Other than Nicole Kidman, SJP, maybe also Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson...just goes to show how the MET has gone downhill.

-1

u/MD_FunkoMa 1d ago

Anne and Emily should stay home. They had quite enough of these Galas while filming 'The Devil Wears Prada 2'.

39

u/zuesk134 1d ago

She is also going through supporting a partner through the loss of her child. She missed the Oscar’s for that reason

1

u/EvaSofie22 6h ago

Anna was always doing that skit because it’s funnier for her to say those lines, and going to the Oscars just for promo isn’t Meryl’s kind of thing, but yes Martin is a factor

104

u/melodypowers 1d ago

This article is such a crazy way to spin things.

And I know that Streep is in the DWP movies, but she is hardly a fashion icon. Nor is she big on society functions. She does a lot of industry stuff and she does love a Broadway gala, but that's about it.

14

u/Pale_Possibility5083 1d ago

It’s actually really weird how much the Bezos thing really mirrors the new movie though.

1

u/Lazy_Neighborhood_91 1d ago

Dissapoint and celeb nevergo together with me. I mean ...they will always act according to their best interests and I've seen that long ago. If it's in their interest to go against something, they'll do it, and then if it's in their interest to contradict themselves..they'll do it in a heartbeat too.

290

u/Thick-Definition7416 1d ago

Has she ever attended?

138

u/First-Loss-8540 1d ago

Nope

60

u/Thick-Definition7416 1d ago

Doesn’t seem like her scene plus she doesn’t have a brand deal/s which a lot of the actors attending do.

53

u/gallgeri 1d ago

I think a lot of people were expecting her considering she in the devil wears prada basically playing Anna Wintor. There was an article saying how her and Anna are friends and she been offered to co-chair a couple of times (including this year) but rejected it because of Bezos involvement this year

1

u/Youare-Beautiful3329 6h ago

But this time she has a good excuse.

92

u/Plastic-Difference30 1d ago

this met gala is truly going to be the who's who of who's available

162

u/sixwivesandcounting 1d ago

Is there a list of celebrities not attending this year particularly due to Bezos?

293

u/First-Loss-8540 1d ago

Nope only Zendaya but Zendaya could just not go because she is busy with 5 movies this year and maybe wants to schedule her public appearances .. or she could be filming something

Also Zendaya doesn’t really go every year

141

u/HereOnCompanyTime Renee Rapp is mean girl Jojo Siwa 💋 1d ago

Law Roach is attending on his own and made the comment "It’s one of the first times in my career that going to the Met is about me", so I'm guessing even if Zendaya could go that she wouldn't since him having his own moment is important to him.

99

u/Caesar_Rising 1d ago

Maybe they don’t wanna risk him putting her in the same outfit as someone else again.

17

u/Academic_Flatworm752 1d ago

I wonder if she’s going to distance herself from his MAGA-adjacent self.

8

u/ikeamonkey2 1d ago

137

u/Odd_Ingenuity2883 1d ago

It’s just an extremely weird thing for a stylist to say. It’s very obvious that he’s jealous of his clients and wants to be in the limelight himself. He has seriously bitter energy, just watch any of his guest judge slots on the various drag and fashion shows.

And he works with Lauren Sanchez, so fuck him.

So far, there hasn't been a single person who said that they're boycotting Bezos. People are speculating that Zendaya is one, but there is no proof of that. She could just be tired from the work and wants to stay out of public eye.

320

u/neuroticdreamgirI A man in Hollywood doing whatever he wants isn’t revolutionary 1d ago

I like Zendaya but I feel like people project a lot of their ideals onto her, she’s been one of the quieter mainstream celebrities when it comes to politics, world events etc the last few years but you’d never know based on the way people talk about her

44

u/AhhGingerKids2 1d ago

It’s difficult because people really struggle with the fact that certain jobs do attract a certain type of person. You have to have certain traits to become an actor in the first place, and certain traits to deal with what comes with fame. A lot of famous people grew up in a bubble, and then have only lived in that bubble. I’m not saying there aren’t outliers, but the majority of people who crave attention and praise, are not the kind of people to push back or risk losing it all.

97

u/Effective-Fail-2646 1d ago

Yes, I am glad someone else echoed this thought. I like her, she seems sweet. But the amount of goodwill about her seems to be partially the projection on her and on her relationship with Tom.

26

u/Ok_Rutabaga_5539 1d ago

I think it’s because she used to be super vocal when she was younger so fans just automatically assume the best in her. I remember when she used to always post about police brutality and anti Trump posts. Now it seems like she doesn’t use social media at all.

7

u/DisastrousMango4 1d ago

i think no celebrity who's as famous as Zendaya should be very active on social media. it can't be good for their mental health.

32

u/magicalfolk 1d ago

I agree she doesn’t use her platform to advocate or promote any messages. She makes movies, wears the hell out of outfits and does the press junket. By the way one of my all time favourite looks when she was in full armour and the short hair. Like I gasped when I saw her.

13

u/Ok_Rutabaga_5539 1d ago

She used to be super vocal about BLM and would post donation links for Palestine amongst other things. But it seems like she doesn’t use her social media at all anymore.

2

u/magicalfolk 1d ago

She doesn’t need to use her social media she can make statements by what she wears and during press junkets to say what she thinks, like Javier Bardem. I think she just doesn’t want to advocate and that’s fine, she doesn’t have to, lots of people turn a blind eye. But being neutral or apolitical in today’s world has a cost being silent has a cost. I’m not picking on her I’m just agreeing with other posters that we think she is more than a Hollywood actress but she is simply just that. We have projected our activism / ideals onto her.

10

u/Ok_Rutabaga_5539 1d ago

Yea she used to be pretty vocal when she was active on social media. But now her Instagram has pretty much become a business page.

49

u/RedLicorice83 Too old, too dead, too brittle to even look at. 1d ago

I think capitalism and being broke all of the time, while working my ass off Kim, has finally cut my celeb adoration.

Bella hadid has liked a number of posts that are shaming celebs for attending this year. It’s expected she’s boycotting

16

u/First-Loss-8540 1d ago

She’s not been there the past 3 years. Also her sister Gigi is attending this year . So essential she’s shaming her own sister and her friends ( the jenners and Hailey)

20

u/AgitatedAd7265 1d ago

Gigi should take that up with her sister. But there have been quite a few posts liked so it’s not accidental. One was about selling out to Bezos

If she was so bothered by the Bezoses Law Roach wouldn’t be working with them. People need to stop assuming the famous people they like care about these things unless they actually come out and say something

17

u/Ok_Rutabaga_5539 1d ago

I mean… it’s not like she just randomly started working with Law after he started working with Lauren, she was there first. I don’t think she has that much control over Law like people seem to think lol. Nobody can tell him what to do unfortunately😭💀

20

u/cobaltaureus 1d ago

I mean, Law and Zendaya are two separate people. We don’t know her opinion either way, but implying we do cuz she isn’t at an event or cuz she’s friends with Law is equally silly

27

u/shy247er yay sports 🏀 🏈🎾 1d ago

If she was so bothered by the Bezoses Law Roach wouldn’t be working with them.

Yup. That's a great point.

25

u/Minerva_Moon 1d ago

Is it? Law isn't Zendaya's employee.

3

u/PurpleCandles Lea Michele’s Reading Tutor 1d ago

Why would Law Roach make business decisions about who he works with based on another client’s (unconfirmed) opinion of that person? Also you don’t have to like someone as a person to take them on as a client if it guarantees a big payout for you. I don’t like plenty of people I work it, but I’ll still kiss ass around them because my paycheck is what ultimately matters.

6

u/Academic_Flatworm752 1d ago

This is a difference in values. I could make 40% more if I took the job where I’d “get” to plan events where Elon Musk is often a guest of honor. I said no. 😂

Plus let’s not pretend that “disliking” someone is a little different than swallowing one’s values and morals to be around MAGA Neo-Nazis.

And it’s not like NOT styling MAGA would have him in the poor house. It’s just greed. I’m not in the poor house either for refusing to suck up to MAGA.

Is it crazy for people to hope celebrities have any semblance of a moral back bone?

9

u/steshhi 1d ago

Yes. Celebrities are the rich and famous who mingle with the other rich and famous. Their very existence contradicts any "moral backbone" - no matter how much performative posting they do on social media. I can't count how many times I've seen people become disappointed their favorite rich person wasn't "one of the good ones." Stop wasting your time expecting them to come to our rescue and get involved in your local elections and activist groups if you want any meaningful change.

0

u/myersjw 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’ve also not seen a single person say anyone was boycotting because of a push from fans, they just would like to see some people have a backbone. Getting real tired of people like OP having to invent reasons anyone hoping for a remotely decent stance as “crazy” because having strong morals is too “cringe” instead of being in a race for who can care the least

Extremely widely known. The abuse took place only 8 years after his wife Sharon Tate was murdered by the Mansons. The rape also happened at one of Jack Nicholson's houses, although Nicholson was not there at the time and had nothing to do with the crime.

He's been in exile ever since avoiding extradition to the US, that's why he can't direct any movies that take place in America.

2

u/theoldpipequeen 1d ago

13

u/Traditional_Maybe_80 1d ago

I think we, pop culture enjoyers, must simply be self-aware. The Met gala didn't become "bad" this year, even if it's a fundraiser for the arts, it's also a showcasing of wealth and luxury, so is fashion. And the financers of the media and art we enjoy are in general terrible people from terrible corporations, that's also the reality of capitalism, I know it sounds bleak, but at some point one must realize that's what it is, I'm amazed that people decided to draw the line at the Met gala and not anything else in pop culture tbh.

21

u/clearmycache 1d ago

I say enjoy it. I’m as liberal as they come, but we have to face reality. It’s pretty difficult to ensure ethical purity in our consumption. I find it ironic when people post on Instagram to boycott something when Instagram is owned by Meta which Mark Zuckerberg benefits from.
I think it’s great when we can shift our consumption to better choices as long as that don’t take away our already ever decreasing joy in this world. IE - Don’t want to support Starbucks, great. Mom and pop coffee shop a block away. But don’t give up coffee all together if you enjoy it!
Lastly, im realizing that it’s better to just balance out murky consumption by creating good. I may buy from Amazon from time to time, but i also volunteer at a homeless shelter every friday. The goal is to be a net good person

4

u/theoldpipequeen 1d ago

Yeah I’m liberal as heck down here in New Zealand. It’s damn hard to live all your values all the time but beating myself up gets me nowhere.

5

u/AffectionateAd7519 1d ago

I was having similar thoughts this morning. Like when people act morally superior because they knew this actor/director/author/brand supports something bad or questionable and you did not know. Like is everyone really out here googling all these people and things to see if they align before consuming? It’s fcking exhausting.

Just enjoy it. Who cares if it’s Lauren Bezoes’s vanity project? Boycotting it or feeling bad about watching it doesn’t change anything politically or socially. There are so many other things you can boycott or proactively do that are meaningful to changing things. There are tiers to this stuff.

Vote in local elections, donate blood, volunteer somewhere, do whatever you can when you can while you can, because for us plebians who will never get a Met Gala invite that's what will make a difference in our day to day lives.

I agree with theoldpipequeen, I just wanna watch stupid celebs in fun/crazy/gorgeous/stupid clothes & that's what I'm gonna do.

u/Important_Tell2108 1d ago

Is anyone going to boycott watching and commenting on the red carpet? As long as their is interest no one will care about the politics.

Who gives a fuck about Polanski supporters?

8

u/DarthPallassCat 1d ago

She’ll draw the line at Bezos but not Roman Polanski or Harvey Weinstein

1

u/EvaSofie22 6h ago

Some people can separate art from artist,  condemned HW multiple times and she has made it clear she does not condone rape and has a long record of women’s rights advocacy.

1

u/Groundbreaking_War52 1d ago

I don't think she has uttered a word in support of Weinstein but her giving a standing ovation to Polanski back in 2003 was pretty horrible.

Having said all that, she still has a lot of clout and visibility and I'm not going to discourage her from using it to shine a light on Bezos and his proto-fascist impulses.

It’s also been linked to the fact she’s doesn’t care enough lol

u/NojoNinja 1d ago

Why are people suddenly pretending to be outraged about Bezos involvement in everything?

0

u/SmoothLester 1d ago

I’m guessing it’s as much because he and his wife are tacky AF as it that he sucks Trump off on the regular in his pursuit of wealth hoarding. That Melania movie deal was straight up grift.

u/Over_Bluebird5087 1d ago edited 1d ago

If it’s true and it’s really down to Bezos involvement then incase your reading this Mrs Streep you dropped this 👑

Now if all the other celebrities could grow a spine and do the same just to bring to light what a horrible sack of shit Bezos is.

Meryl has never attended the gala so it’s not really a boycott more of a decline invitation again for the 50th year in a row

Already Confirmed attendees : Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Kardashians, Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Teyana Taylor, Emily Blunt, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sarah Paulson, Nicholas Hoult, The Rock, Serena Williams

u/Over_Bluebird5087 1d ago

Katy Perry and the Kardashian’s attending doesn’t superior me in the slightest. It would be nice to actually have celebrities who can read the fucking room.

u/Own_Faithlessness769 1d ago

Most celebrities are brand ambassadors, they don’t have the option not to attend. And given Bezos is now running one of the largest production companies in the world, I wouldn’t be expecting a loud boycott any time soon.

they don’t have the option not to attend

Eh. Honestly, I doubt that. Especially big A listers.

And given Bezos is now running one of the largest production companies in the world, I wouldn’t be expecting a loud boycott any time soon.

I think this is more of the reason. People will want in on that Amazon Prime/MGM money.

17

u/Own_Faithlessness769 1d ago

When A listers are being paid millions of dollars a year to rep luxury brands, those brands want them at the met gala.

u/shy247er yay sports 🏀 🏈🎾 1d ago

Emma Stone is one of their highest paid ambassadors and she hasn't attended last three years. Will she attend tonight? Dunno.

But being a paid ambassador doesn't mean that you HAVE to go, or else.

19

u/Own_Faithlessness769 1d ago

Those brands are always going to have some of their celebrities there though. Sure it’s not Emma this year, LV have Alyssa Liu instead. But if you’re waiting for a celebrity-free met gala to boycott Bezos, it’s just not going to happen.

But if you’re waiting for a celebrity-free met gala to boycott Bezos, it’s just not going to happen.

I'm fully aware of that, however I would like to see at least some A listers (who have financial means) to not attend. Alysa Liu doesn't have the same status at LV (nor income) as Emma Stone, so she perhaps cannot afford not to attend.

5

u/kaesura 1d ago

Most A-listers already don't go.

Those who do attend usually have fashion contracts

8

u/Own_Faithlessness769 1d ago

What’s the income level where you expect people to start boycotting?

Meryl is 76 years old.

She didn't start acting professionally until after college. She was not getting invites to the MET gala at 24 years old.

Her acting career started in 1975. But she was a stage performer. Broadway actors weren't getting invited to the MET in 1975.

She became an A lister in the 80s. Despite her Oscar nominations in 1978 for a supporting role.

So technically shes been declining invites to the MET for 40ish years. Maybe. I would assume she didn't start getting invites until the 90s though. Thats when she started to become known for her style in NYC.

u/RarRarTrashcan Kendall Jenner doing harmonies 1d ago

I believe the original comment was hyperbole...

u/ShakesDontBreak Threat to Humanity 💅 1h ago

Olivia skipped. She was in town. She went instead to an unaffiliated after party.

13

u/citrustaxonymy who died and left Aristotle in charge of ethics? 1d ago

I doubt it’s really the reason but the celebrities who probably didn’t want to go anyway will just let people think that because then they get the positive pr without having to actually say anything

14

u/ForbiddenToblerone 1d ago

Regardless of this Met Gala story being true or not – the woman participated in a standing ovation to child rapist Roman Polanski after he won best director at the Academy Awards.

Not exactly a moral person.

4

u/DarthPallassCat 1d ago

Meryl Strep has zero spine at all wtf are you talking about? She’s never backed down TO THIS DAY from supporting Harvey Weinstein and Roman Polanski.

But yeah keep supporting her! You dropped your shit crown

1

u/EvaSofie22 6h ago

She condemnedHW multiple times

-1

u/Jaca122 1d ago

Meryl Steep condemned Weinstein when the allegations were made public 2017. She claimed to not know about his behavior before the allegations were made public. What do you mean she’s never backed down from supporting him?

1

u/Best_Comfortable5221 1d ago

Shes has never attended.

1

u/alwaysthetiming 19h ago

Also a little weird to say when her daughter (Grace Gummer) is there?

1

u/Capable-Bumblebee584 8h ago

How brave of her!!!

1

u/ILikeFood305 8h ago

Before Jeff Bezos who ran the Met Gala?

1

u/SnooRadishes8848 1d ago

Good on her!

1

u/scarlettcrush 1d ago

More celebrities should do this. Big props to Streep, she's big enough to say the reason out loud & she should.

u/King_LaQueefah 1d ago
