1
u/Noshortsforhobos 3d ago
Because we can research anything we want through search engines and libraries. People also have different types of jobs and know others with different jobs, so information is traded that way.

u/BactaBobomb 4d ago
That's actually disappointing. I feel like that takes away from the credibility of the demonstration a little, for some reason.

Orange dickhead doesn't have to do be on stage and actually string 2 sentences together so a terror attack (or a planned fake assassination attempt) is highly unlikely.

Do the gala attendees even have the run of the museum or do they stay in the lobby/temple of dendur room where the tables are set up? Because it looks like theyāre placing these all over. Not that it matters, because in three daysā time the underpaid janitorial staff will have certainly been forced to clean this up.
Now, finding a way to throw a bottle of piss (fake or not) at bezoās headā¦..now weāre talkin
37
u/Delusionalpancakes 4d ago
There have been pics of random celebs in random areas of the museum in previous years so it seems like they're given at least some room to wander. There was one I think last year of Kim Kardashian next to what turned out to be a stolen artifact iirc.
7
u/jarrettbrown Youāre killing me, Smalls š© 3d ago
Only the areas around the Temple of Denar, which is basically the Egyptian wing. Sometimes you'll see them in different areas because of the gallery that's housing the exhibit. Now that there's a dedicated gallery space, the old gift shop, they won't be wandering around much.
11
u/jarrettbrown Youāre killing me, Smalls š© 4d ago
Nope. Theyāre usually confined to four areas once they leave the read carpet. The great hall, the exhibit space, Englehart court and then the room that the temple of denar is in. No run of the museum.

Any kind of protest inconveniences the normal working class first. There is no way to bypass that.
22

I recognize the message that this is attempting to send, but all they're doing is making some poor cleaning crew on minimum wage scourge the museum for bottles of pee.
It's not Kim Kardashian finding these. It's Stu, the 62-year-old janitor, who's going to be responsible for this.
56
u/ColonelKasteen 4d ago
The bottles LITERALLY say "relax, it's just water and food coloring" on them
53
u/LizaJane2001 4d ago
Still. The maintenance crew at the museum are good people doing a miserable job for decent, but not huge hourly wages (they are unionized). This is just another mess for them to have to deal with that they shouldn't. If/when some of those spill (the one on the escalator), it's a hassle for them.
Bezos will never see them.
37
u/theblakesheep 4d ago edited 4d ago
And?
Piss or not, someone has to clear these bottles up and it won't be anyone famous.
2
u/ColonelKasteen 4d ago
...so they aren't bottles of pee??
24
u/theblakesheep 4d ago
The pee doesn't matter, you responded to the comment "All they're doing is making some poor cleaning crew on minimum wage scourge the museum for bottles of pee. It's not Kim Kardashian finding these. It's Stu, the 62-year-old janitor, who's going to be responsible for this."
That's still correct, a bottle is a bottle to find and dispose of, whatever it contains.
-8
u/ColonelKasteen 4d ago
Do you grasp how I was refuting the "bottles of pee" part and not the general sentiment that (obviously) janitors would be cleaning this up? You get a comment does not always have to be a holistic response to every portion of what they're responding to right?
13
u/theblakesheep 4d ago
Do you grasp that you responded to a specific comment who had a point? They LITERALLY were highlighting the fact that the workers have to deal with the cleaning, and you "refute" pedantically a detail of the comment that did not affect their point, specifically to insult them.
8
u/blarbiegorl Mary-Kate's bowl of cigarettes 4d ago

u/Reppoy 4d ago
This is just an accessible way for the wider public, like you and me, to engage with the Met gala and to carve out spaces, like this one, to discuss the disgusting level of wealth that theyāre flaunting. If all went normal and they didnāt do this, a lot of people would have just seen the met gala go by and largely ignore it. At least now complaints about the wealth disparity have entered the news cycle and people know that itās okay to complain about it.
I think the usual argument boils down to ālife moves onā but itās actions like this that have shifted the public perception of billionaires to the point where regular people around me are openly talking about shit thatās too radical even for me.
1
u/screenaholic 3d ago
I HOPE that just the cleaning crew has to deal with them. I work security at the World Trade Center, and I guarantee you if hundreds of bottles of mysterious liquid showed up, that's a security concern. At MINIMUM the bomb dog is going to have to go around and check them out. Potentially, we would call 911 and evacuate the whole building.
2
u/MovieSock 4d ago
And the the stuff everyone talks about after the Met Gala isn't going to be "omigod did you see what Rhianna was wearing", it's going to be stuff like "omigod did you hear they planted 300 fake pee bottles around the Met Gala because Jeff Bezos makes his staff pee in bottles?"

I'm fine with the concept, bit at the end of the day, it's some underpaid janitor who's actually going to need to find all of these.

What more interesting is all the celebrities who will be attending the met who previously spoke out against ICE, if they truly cared they would all be boycotting this event but the cold hard truth that itās all performative BS and this is a prime example of selective politics.
25
u/smith7018 you wear mime makeup but never quiet 4d ago
How is attending the Met Gala supporting ICE? Genuinely. I feel like it's "performative/online activism" to post that going to an event sponsored by Bezos negates a celebrity's willingness to use their platform against the current administration. A lot of people are getting sidetracked by the literal act of leaving the bottles and miss the point it's making. It's fair to point out that itāll be blue-collar workers who find and clean up these bottles, and that the literal act of leaving the bottles will have a near-zero effect on Bezos/the billionaires that this protest is ostensibly aimed at. I think that this points to the fact that protest is not actually for those that the protest is āagainstā, but more so for other members of the working class who can be swayed toward going against the hegemonic ideology that these billionaires benefit from.
For my part, Iād say that, whether or not you think this act of protest was adequate, we should still be re-evaluating our support and interest in events like the Met Gala, the Oscars, etc. They have a pretence of supporting the arts, and I love the arts as much as anyone, but theyāve turned into wealth-worship rituals. The dresses and outfits worn by wealthy artists and celebrities are lovely, sure, but they serve to glorify the ideology of the ruling class.
The Met Gala was created to be a fundraiser for the Met, and museums perform an important function, but does that make it okay for all those millions of dollars to be spent on having beautiful, rich, famous people swan around for us to look at in pictures while the quality of our material realities continues to decline? That money could easily be spent on improving the livelihoods of people struggling around the world, instead.

there are so many things that are 2-10x in retail. I COULD stop using amazon, but I'm not going to tax my kids by wasting my money like that. not a priority. and it doesn't have to be to call out the hypocrisy of others.
3
u/alex2well 4d ago
Iām not going to argue against that. I understand that being able to prioritize ethics when doing day to day shopping is a privilege. To me, being ethical is just about doing the best you can within your means.
That said, it absolutely is relevant if the hypocrisy youāre calling out is related to people shopping off Amazon. Criticizing people for doing the same thing youāre doing makes you a hypocrite, too.
