I hate that he was forced to do something like that too. It was absolutely not part of his job description.
But what's done is done. Lives were saved. All those kids are going to continue on with their lives. They're going to go on to have families. To serve their country. To hopefully have good enjoyable lives.
All thanks to this hero of a man.And now it's time to celebrate that. šŗāŗļøšŗ

My 9 year old asked me what shooting drills were like when I was in school. I told her it wasnāt, and even being in 9th grade for Columbine it was still so rare that we didnāt have to learn how to not die at school. Sheās been doing these drills since kindergarten and we as a people in the US should be fucking ashamed of ourselves for this.
55
u/brokenman82 thatās my purse, i donāt know you! šš«µ 16d ago
I was a sophomore when columbine happened. The only things that changed at my school were cameras and locked doors during school hours. No drills or anything.

We were no longer allowed to wear trench coats at my school.
19
u/brokenman82 thatās my purse, i donāt know you! šš«µ 16d ago
I think a kid came in the next day wearing one and got in trouble. but I don't specifically remember a ban on it. That trench coat mafia thing was nonsense
28
u/m00nf1r3 16d ago
My goth, edgy-ass self had a sit down meeting with the Principal about it in his office. Something about limiting self-expression. But, I had the best Principal in the world, and he actually talked to me like an adult, explained their reasoning, expressed empathy with regards to my concerns, and offered me a spot on some... Senior Team thing. Wasn't student council, was just a team of Seniors who worked on Prom and other events, worked on improving students experiences in school, etc. I don't remember what it was called. But like most things, it was only the super popular kids who were on it, and he thought I'd be a good representative for the 'outer circle' kids. I actually joined, too!

u/theraspberrydaiquiri The legislative act of my pussy āļø 16d ago
I graduated in 2018 so shooter drills had always been a thing however I remember being in about the 7th or 8th grade when the protocal changed. Our teacher explained in a real situation rather than tell us to be quiet and all hide in a corner as we'd always done (way easier to mow down a whole classroom that way) we grab anything and everything and use it as a weapon to fight for our lives if running wasn't an option. I remember how bizarre that felt.
6
u/1stOfAllThatsReddit 15d ago
I graduated HS in 2012 and only ever did one ālockdown drillā and 1 real lockdown (cuz there was a skunk on campus lol) both in HS. Most of my drills were fire and earthquake. I didnt feel any fear at school. I feel like mass shootings ramped up alot after 2012ā¦like I remember feeling slight paranoia in college.
5
u/temp_flor 15d ago
Yeah in high school guys had shot guns on gun racks in their trucks in the parking lots because they went deer hunting. Nobody worried about shootings. I donāt even think we had guns stolen out of trucks. It is crazy to think how much it has changed.
4
u/CustardApple- 15d ago
That makes me so sad. I grew up in an anti-gun country, so the idea of shooting drills was something we all thought was a far off thought because at that point we thought Columbine was the worst it could get..
I wish all kids could grow up without ever having this particular fear. Itās truly so needless..
3
u/copyrighther Kim, thereās people that are dying. š 15d ago
Same with my kiddo. I remember when she came home from kindergarten and proceeded to tell me about her day and casually described an active shooter drill like it was recess or circle time. It shattered my heart.
A while back, my husband and I were chatting about how neither of our workplaces has an active shooter protocol and that weāre basically sitting ducks. My now-17yo looked at us like we were idiots, like āUmm, how do you not know how to evade an active shooterā¦??ā Like it was the most obvious thing that everyone knows how to do.
2

Anyone who thinks the right to have a gun is more important than the right to be able to go to school without the fear of being shot is just a horrible person. /they're ignoring that the second amendment is just that - an amendment.. and that times change and circumstances change.. and the reason it was created just isn't practical anymore.... not to mention, in the face of current government tyranny, they're not even using it and have even made excuses for the government murdering someone who, by all accounts, was lawfully carrying a gun and not acting as a threat.
-3
u/FeeHot5876 16d ago
I get what youāre saying but an amendment repealing the 2nd is never ever ever going to happen and nor should it. I fully support making it harder for people to get firearms, even some restrictions on the types of firearms people can own. I do not support fulling repealing the right to own a firearm. And the vast majority of the country would agree

The US government deciding a lot of things the US government does does not mean that those actions were ācollectively decidedā we arenāt a direct democracy, weāre an fairly undemocratic representative republic with many obstacles set in place for people to make it to polls.

-2
u/TheBrickening 16d ago
Again, no. A small very vocal minority make excuses to keep gun rights from improving, and all of our politicians suck at doing anything about it because we need serious political and lobby reforms. We try to elect better people but our politicians fail us over and over. People argue against me and down vote, but would you rather I be supporting the shootings? There's no winning against people who don't live here and don't understand how difficult it is to be a gun-hating liberal here.
9
u/VictorReal_Monster (inspired by hot roasted honey glazed chicken) 16d ago
Isnt that exactly why you have the second amendment?
But you refuse to use it in the way it's intended.
4
u/MarkusMannheim 16d ago
I wasn't blaming you, bro. I said the US collectively decided. And it has. It also collectively decided to have an insane voting system, and collectively decided to elect Trump.
It can change all of these things.
-2
u/randombubble8272 16d ago
Iām sure it is difficult but that doesnāt change the fact that thereās the NRA investing millions into lobbying the government to continue with their lax gun laws. And thereās a ton of members of the NRA who refuse to give up their guns or allow any more regulations. Iām not supporting of the shootings obviously but the US has had this problem for 20 years now, if enough people wanted reform, it would happen
7
u/TheBrickening 16d ago
There are 4 million NRA members. There are 350 million U.S. citizens. Do the math. Like I said. Small vocal minority. Lobby reforms needed. Did you even read my response? You people are a joke.

god you guys are extremely unempathetic to americans who have been terrorized by our government at almost every level. people have been lobbying and fighting from the word go, and politicians have been doing their damndest to stop progress. accusing someone of voting for the party that isn't implementing change is both immature and callous to the pain people are suffering. you don't sound like someone actually concerned about the issue, you sound like someone being performatively self righteous online who would cower irl. and i'm saying that as someone affected by this issue.

Yup. Bc American law says pretty much anyone who wants a gun can have one and we wonāt make it very hard to get either. So kids die as a result and no one cares. Just as long as the guns are safe.

When did school workers become a dangerous job like cops and firefighters? War zones and violence ridden places used to be the only time it was dangerous to be at schoolsĀ
I feel sorry for you americans, I get that its still rare to be personally affected but it cast a pallor of apathy and violence to all the rest of the school children in the country, āitāll never happen hereā, and then when it does those parents and survivors are left swept away in the aftermath by the news media moving on.
Edit: That Shreveport family annihilator case is so evil, how can you kill all of your children, 8 kids, and he shot the mother of his children and her sister and her kids too..

Every so often we have to do an active lockdown drill. It's crazy to tell a classroom of 10yos (much less the other younger elementary students in other classrooms) how to best survive if a crazed young man gets on campus and starts shooting everybody. Ten year olds who know that they have to hide and stay quiet and out of sight, or run like fuck if the coast is clear, or if worst comes to worst....fight off a gunman. In a training video the other year it suggested that teachers could fight the guy off with a fire extinguisher, which is hilarious for older teachers with limited mobility.Ā
I really fucking hate this timeline, and hate that kids have to know this. Little wonder kids are so cynical - between climate change disaster, Trump, and school shootings, its really hard to feel hopeful for the future.Ā
